Besieged City, a poem

lonely island
lonely island

The sea looked at me

With an ocean-deep sadness

That burned my eyes with its tears

It’s like a soul

Afraid of Paul or the gospels

The Psalms were opened upon

And they burned my heart

With their true lines of music

I meet you now with sadness

Not with age-old madness

And silence between us is silent

Because there’s too much for words

My thoughts are too complicated for words

You’re too complicated to listen

Someone told me that you can hear your own

Blood moving through your veins

Sometimes when it’s late at night

I lie just below the surface

Feeling the life in my veins

But feeling dead all the same

You didn’t ask to listen

So God is the only One who

Knows everything you didn’t care to know

I’m in a besieged city

On my lonely island

And God is the One with the love

My times are in Your hands

Beautiful and a blessing to be the first to arrive and read your words. I so love the way that you look deeply into all of creation, the sea is yet another example of the way we overlook things in life the Father placed there to provide for us. When we study them deeply they stir deep within us feeling that need to be expressed as you have.

Merry Christmas and His Peace be with you...

This is your best poem yet; both the sadness and Scriptural truth resound with beauty through your words.

Thanks, Jane! I was inspired by Psalm 31:21 - "Blessed be the Lord, for He has made marvelous His lovingkindness to me in a besieged city." I think an island in the middle of nowhere is kind of like a besieged city.
