Bewitched - or - beWitched?

CXXV111.

Bernardino Licinio (1489-1565) Portrait of a Lady
Bernardino Licinio (1489-1565) Portrait of a Lady

The verb 'bewitch' lists a couple of definitions. One involves the casting of magic spells and thereby, gaining control over someone. That bodes no good.

The other involves the enchanting and delighting of someone, suggesting being the result of honorable attractive traits of character and personality, That bodes good.

So what's the problem, if any? None if we keep some things in mind!

Whichever definition/interpretation comes to mind in a person upon hearing the word "bewitch" (or any of its derivative parts of speech) depends on that person's own experience - or its lack - with either or both conditions of being 'bewitched', which is the title here. It emphasizes the effect rather than the act of bewitching as experienced by a recipient of either magic spells for control or being touched by enchanting, delightful influences. Ah-h-h!

Bewitched by bewitching movies-Serenaded by bewitching stars

Such contrasting mental associations with this word, 'bewitch' are not unlike mental-emotional battles between the 'madonna' image for woman vs. the 'seductive slut' image, which seems to haunt some guys at times. In the reverse, a similar mental-emotional battle between the 'nice guy' image and the 'bad boy' image haunts some gals at times. There's an intrinsic gender equality about it!

But, no, this isn't about that psychology; merely bears mentioning as it relates to the idea of 'bewitched' which might be prevalent among my readers - or not.

My personal association with 'bewitched' has only to do with being entranced and delighted. Any experience of mine with controlling persons involved nothing bewitching for me. Quite the contrary! That can happen, though, as we see all too frequently, especially to the young and/or vulnerable for various reasons.

Which witch am I?

Which witch are you?

Which witch we'd like to be,

We - ARE!

I'm benign!

You, too?

My pixie dust is light and kind,

Dark and dreary,

I won't do. . .

. . . So far. . .

Hey! Your video is bewitched. I get a big "this video is private" sprinkled in white pixie dust all over a blackened screen. I will return when its effort to hypnotize my vulnerable mind is corrected. I stared for 15 minutes before it let me go. I need a drink!

Nellieanna profile image

Nellieanna 4 years ago from TEXAS Author

Help! And I was so careful to label the video 'public' so that wouldn't happen. May be a ghosty-ghouly curse. I'll go fix it now! Sorry!

You may really need that drink AFTER you view it! - I was wearing the pumpkin headband when I was called by the Well Drilling people about the pump bill. haha. Good thing it wasn't video on the phone! I'd never have been convincingly self-possessed;- well, not the right kind anyway.

It should be openable now. . . . let me know, if not. (after you're done laughing at the thing!)

Thank you for being my first visitor! :-)

Nellie, I love it! Wonderful hub, capped off perfectly by a truly lovely video! So nice to see you "almost live" and in person. :)

Hello butterfly! The video is simply too cute for words. Watched it 3 times and laughed with delight at every episode. The hat is hysterical and the shoulder shrug had me coughing up my vodka and tonic! I need another before continuing. Batting the eyes was a nice touch!

Outstanding and bewitching breadkdown of the word, I always love that Sinatra song. Love the video as well, too funny!

Billy - Thank you! Yup - 'almost live and in person ' . Your videos are so inspiring! I've made several, though I'm an amateur and the full cast and crew. Your beloved gives you're such a finished polish!

Alan - aw, thank you What fun to make you laugh! It's totally ad-lib. If I thought about it ahead of time, I'd chicken out!

But would it spoil it if I admit that the eyelash batting was due to not being able to see much and sensitivity to the light or my eyeliner? hehe

Enjoy your beverage. I'm in that silly headband, having some dark chocolate-covered pomegranate balls and passing out treats to the little goblins that come to my door. The colorful monkey I got for Izzy is seated at the front door to greet them till I can make my way there.

I'm going to 'close shop' at 8:00, I think, before the oversized 'kids' start coming by.

Thank you, Jim! I love words and their etymology, which served my hub here!

Oh yes, that song's a wonderful one! So many great artists have sung it. Sinatra's version is great. But it's the wonderful Rodgers and Hart melody and lyrics which make it so memorable. It's as haunting as its theme.

Oh how delightfully bewitching dear one! I think I like the one without the magic, but the enchanting and delighting of someone, as you have done here! That first video and song is amazing! And the one with you is so very delightful and bewitching. You are too cute indeed! What a lovely personality you have, very enchanting to all.

Thank you, Faith! It's gratifying to know that making an utter fool of myself has slipped by 'under the wire'! Attempting to make a video when I know so little about it is a risk, indeed! But, then again, it's pretty much the way I am a lot of the time. It is fun to try to do. You're the sweetest person to say such lovely things so generously!

Michael Head 4 years ago

I haven't been ready for the "benign" Great Pumpkin for years--being bi-polar makes it complicated. It's really weird sh*t to take. But I'm afraid I'll lose the "One" if I don't get my act together. Your Hub is most elucidating and gives me strength. It's weird. I didn't ask for this, but I want it. It was written in the stars. I don't want to lose my lovely Wiccan. They're too few and far in between, but there's only one for me. I want her to know that, but somehow I think she already knows. But thank you. I have a lot to do before the solstice.

Nellieanna profile image

Nellieanna 4 years ago from TEXAS Author

Hello, Michael. Glad you stopped by, especially if it somehow helped you think through your situation, needing to show your "One" your devotion and fully acknowledging your own responsibility in "getting your act together" and "having a lot to do" about it in order to do what needs doing. A lot of folks never get it together that much - admitting the need for it, their own responsibility in it and (hopefully) what is needed to achieve the goal. It seems that you know there is work to be done within yourself. That's the only information about it I have -- your own admission. Excellent!

I'm no authority on bi-polar disorder but I know it's very challenging to the one having it and often to those around him/her. It's not wholly in your control,, probably, but if there are medical or other controls, you should consistently use them, right? You and others around you may need to realize it is a real condition and has effects, and be OK with that.

The main thing I emphasize, though, is that no amount of effort or yearning can 'make' someone feel for you as you feel for her. If you're a mess, you need to clean up your act for yourself and to show who you are at your best, no matter who buys into it. She certainly may - IF she honestly feels love for you. Love is not a 'goal' though. It either IS present in a person's heart or it's not. But you're right to realize that, obviously, it's less likely to happen if you remain some sort of a mess, which YOU, yourself seem to see a need to change. I don't know you at all, so I've no opinion about whether or not you are.

But no one is perfect, nor do they have to be in order to be lovable. It is SO important to honestly LOVE ONESELF and one's good qualities if we hope and expect anyone else to notice and love us and our qualities, too.

How wise you are to realize that she's a rare person and worth your willingness to bring yourself up to a standard you feel she would value.

IF the solstice has any effect, it may or may not be enough time to count on it. The work you need to do is YOURS and not the product of any external influence, though good influences won't hurt your effort. There will be solstices twice a year for the rest of your life. There is only ONE YOU to get busy and get yourself together realistically. Don't be a perfectionist. You'll never be satisfied that way. Aim for the most excellent you can be and don't forget that your essential value was there at birth and will last as long as you do. You can begin loving yourself NOW. Now is all one has with which to work.

Have a marvelous life. And thank you for the visit and lovely comments about my hub! Take strength from your own well-spring - it will be with you constantly.

Chin up! Hugs.

Marie, I hope your absence on HubPages is due to many good things keeping you away! In any case, you're missed here. I'm sort of loyal, so haven't flown the coop as too many seem to be doing. I'm glad I'm still here, too, as well as many of my favorites whom we share as favorites! I believe you were among my first friends and followers when I came aboard rather cautiously almost 3 years ago. I seem to have less time to keep up as I'd like, but I'm here regularly.

You know, a couple of my HP favorites you may not have met are also from Oregon - arb and xstatic, who have both commented here. I wonder how near geographically they are to you. . . Both are excellent writers and dear friends.

Big hugs to you!

Sweet Nellieanna,

I am so behind from Hurricane Sandy, thankfully safe, and even our town is celebrating Halloween tomorrow evening due to down trees and power lines.

Your darling poem and adorable video has me now in the mood for the Trick or Treaters. Thank you, my dear and bewitching friend. I, for one, find this to be the ultimate compliment...Hugs to you, Maria

Nellieanna profile image

Nellieanna 4 years ago from TEXAS Author

Maria, Oh, my! How glad I am to hear that you're safe. But it's unnerving to see trees and power lines down. How about power to homes? Is it being restored? I hope so, especially with colder weather due. Glad Halloween is still intact. The holiday is not a major issue but it is a symbol of normalcy.

I've been SO concerned for you and several others of our Hub family who live in the path of that destruction. I've just been checking the locations of my fellow Hub gals you've interviewed and see about 9 of them who are surely being affected by the storm, some probably more directly than others. The storm's effects are so broad that I can't fully conceive of how much it has hurt our folks, but I'm sure many of the guys in your interviews are in its path, as well.

It breaks my heart to see the devastation for all those whose whole worlds have been upended; and especially for our own dear friends we know so well here who may have been targeted by the uncaring storm.

I so appreciate your coming by to my hub and leaving such a sweet and upbeat comment! Glad it lifted you spirits!

Let's see, dear Nellieanna...and I hope I am remembering everyone that I have heard from in my series, gals and guys...everyone seems OK, as well as their families...lots of property damage, down trees and power outages of course... But, so fortunate in the grand scheme...

Gail...From DE

bMalin and LORD...From NJ

Paula (fpherj) and Mary (tillsontitan)... From NY

Mickey Sr and me...From PA

Thank you so much for your kind concern. Love you, Maria

Nellieanna profile image

oh, yes - I'm so glad none of you had any worse damage or loss. But it's something we're just so stunned about. Thank you for updating me, Maria.

I'm wondering about Genna from Boston, Dana from NY, Janine from Saford, NY, and Tammy from N. Carolina. I'm not familiar enough to visualize how wide a radius was involved

marcoujor profile image

marcoujor 4 years ago from Jeffersonville PA

Although I have not personally heard from Dana, Janine and Tammy, I have seen them around FB...I will have to see about dear Genna.

It seemed as though, in some way or another, most of the East coast and even in some...was effected. They are now predicting a NorEastern for the weekend that will complicate things further...

Now this is beWitching...? Have a lovely weekend, lovely lady.

Nellieanna profile image

Nellieanna 4 years ago from TEXAS Author

OH, I do hope dear Genna and her people are safe and OK, Maria. All that devastation is truly hard to grasp. But I figured all that fury surely wouldn't respect boundaries but would reach on inward at least somewhat. I think I've read that they lose power over land, though, so maybe that softened the blow a little as it raged on.

What matters is hoping to and finding our precious friends have escaped the worst of it. I feel terrible for all the victims -- so, so many! - but I'm personally greatly concerned about our folks.

Heard about the nor'eastern which could bring snow atop of everything; and also that there's another hurricane gathering, which may or may not stay out to sea. Lordy. Let's pray for better outcomes on all fronts.

These things are definitely be/byWitching - or worse.

I'm having a lovely weekend, though I feel a little guilty to be having it with so many in such need. The weather is gorgeous. We've had an unusually extended 'summer' with record-breaking highs - yesterday was 87. The average for that day has been 75. - Now there's a nice sun, 84 expected this afternoon, with a nice mild 'cold front' expected to moderate it for several days. I'm able to do with no heat or cooling which is a big saving. Then to top it off, my ranch project that had been in limbo for a bunch of years but has been in the works all this year has come to wondrous fruition & going forward better than I could have ever imagined or hoped.

So it IS a lovely weekend and I appreciate your well-wishing! We never know how effective our heart-felt kindness really is!

Hugs.

Bewitched as usual, Nellieanna, by your wit and charming pumpkiness. Would have been here sooner but just awoke from a chocoholic stupor induced by all those free treats solicited from trick or treat night. :)

Nellieanna profile image

Nellieanna 4 years ago from TEXAS Author

Ah -- thank you, dear DrBJ. The bottom line is that you did make it here! I was peeking around to see if you were on your way!

I do hope your chocoholic stupor at least was limited to consuming of DARK chocolate, which is so much healthier than the kind usually dropped into trick or trieat bags! For example: I didn't eat any of the chocolate candy I was passing out to the little goblins, but indulged in my own stash of various wondrous dark varieties between doorbell rings One kind with pomegranate centers is almost too yummy to be so healthy as I'm counting on it being! :-)

SilverGenes 4 years ago

Yes, Nellieanna, we were spared this time. It did come up into Canada though and friends near the Great Lakes had to evacuate. Now that we are right on the open ocean (and a much warmer than usual sea) we monitor everything carefully. We are experiencing weather more akin to late summer and early fall and that doesn't bode well.

I'm so glad to know you're OK. Hope your friends will be, too.

At our 'home base' in Del Rio when we spent much time at the ranch, we kept an RV on a site for our supply treks to Del Rio, 100 miles from the ranch. Several years during that time, a couple next to our RV from Nova Scotia were among 'snowbirds' fleeing winter for the balmy southern Texas seasons. Such lovely folks - and their charming malamute with whom we fell in love. They ran an RV campground up there which shut down for the winter.

Hope you're going to continue to be OK.

Hehe. . . Dear Christopher, you have me in your spell! Thank you for that lovely compliment! Hugs.

Our Martie has begun to assemble a cyber orchestra consisting of Hubbers, to whom she's assigning each an instrument. It's such an innovative concept which she carries off extremely well!

The first one was in October, with Marcourjor, assigned the clarinet. I've the honor of being the November addition, assigned the flute. Martie's own knowledge & appreciation of music makes this series outstanding, interesting, informational, & full of lovely music; plus she's inviting the honorees to submit favorite music u-tube selections for our various emotions and to explain the connections we feel to the selections.

You, such a music lover, might enjoy taking a peek @:

That was fun Nellieanna! Bewitched always reminded me of Samantha and Darren. She's a witch and he's bewitched by her. I think it's romantic, however, it could make some people 'mad' being bewitched. They get all obsessed and do things that they perhaps wouldn't otherwise do had they not been so smitten. Could get ugly.

I laughed out loud at "'bewitch' are not unlike mental-emotional battles between the 'madonna' image for woman vs. the 'seductive slut' "

I had a hard time picturing you saying or writing 'slut'. lol! Thanks for an fun and interesting info. - Cher

Nellieanna profile image

Nellieanna 4 years ago from TEXAS Author

I loved Samantha and Darren. I guess it matters 'how' one is bewitched and by whom! I've always envied her ability to make housework and other tooly work disappear! Who knows, though? Maybe it's an ability we possess but don't know it. One way to make those chores disappear (at least one day at a time) is to ignore 'em. After all, they're never really fully 'done' anyway! Tomorrow when they reappear, who knew whether or not they were done yesterday? (snicker)

haha - I'm a realist, Cher. What else to call 'em? ;-) Calls 'em as I sees 'em. They do have their following! So I am a realist. And perhaps all females have a little slut DNA in us. Ever watch a small girl charming all the guys within her realm?

Thanks for the fun comments! Hugs.

I would soooooooo prefer the magic spell casting thingummy and gaining control of that special someone, making life so much more PRACTIVAL… But then that would be soooooooo dishonourable that it does not bear even thinking about, so it is back to the more complicated bewitching, trying to enchant and delight you bit. How am I doing? ;-)))

Nellieanna profile image

Nellieanna 4 years ago from TEXAS Author

Dimitris - you're such a master at bewitchment! How could anyone escape or resist your spell, especially when it's the more honorable spell using enchantment and delight? (. . . er. . . .announcing intention isn't accomplishing doing it, y'know . . .) hehehehe. . . (as you say, this choice is less . . . easily practicable . . . than casting thingummy, etc, etc. Enchantment & delight require finesse, sincerity, patience. . . :-)

You're so cute.
