A Picture Storybook

Billy Buko and Jonty July are best friends. They spend their entire day engaged in interactive, healthy and imaginative games outdoors, without ever leaving the garden in which they are playing. When it gets dark and they feel afraid, they know that Jonty's mother is nearby and will come to their aid.

Recommended for children ages 3 - 5 years.

They woke up so early one morning,

And silently crept out of bed.

Left the house as a new day was dawning,

For a long busy day lay ahead.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Off to the jungle they hurried,

Billy Buko and Jonty July,

And they really were not at all worried,

When a python came slithering by.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Said the python, "Aha!" With a gleam in his eye,

"Two children that look rather yummy!"

Were they scared, were they shy? Did they scream, did they cry?

No! They tied a big knot in his tummy!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Then they saw something that made them both stare.

On the river was something afloat.

"What is that thing that I see over there?

Do you think it is some kind of boat?"

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"A boat? Oh no, no! I really think not!"

Then goodness me, what a surprise!

The nearer it came and the closer it got,

They saw that it seemed to have eyes!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Then it opened it's mouth with a welcoming smile,

And said, "Well! Well! Well! What a treat!"

In front of them there was a HUGE crocodile

Who was hungry and ready to eat!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Did they show any fear? Wring their hands in despair,

And run away somewhere to hide?

No, they coolly and calmly with never a care,

Jumped on it's back for a ride.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Later that day, when feeling quite bored,

A tiger they came across.

He growled and he spat and he hissed and he roared:

"I will show you two just who is boss!"

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Did they take flight? Run off in a fright?

Now, why would they want to do that?

With a touch of the hand, not even a fight,

There was a tame tabby cat.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Then Jonty said to his very best friend,

"It is time that we headed for home.

Though it's sad that this wonderful day has to end,

It's too late to be out on our own."

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Don't tell our mothers, whatever you do,

About our adventures today.

They would be furious if only they knew,

Oh, what do you think they would say?

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Then suddenly, silently in the dark wood,

Something flew over their heads,

Both of them screamed as loud as they could,

"I want my Mummy," they said.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Billy and Jonty looked all around,

As they tightly held onto each other.

Then came a kind of a ghostly sound,

And they yelled and they bawled for their mothers.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mother came running as fast as can be,

What is wrong? What is out there?

A man with a gun? A ghost in a tree?

A thief on the run or a grizzly bear?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Then how she laughed and she said, "You are silly!

That was only an owl that you heard!

Together you fought mighty beasts, you and Billy,

Now why are you scared of a silly old bird?"

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After a bath, they got into their beds,

And looked up at the stars in the sky.

Tired but happy, they rested their heads,

Billy Buko and Jonty July.

Thank you so much for those encouraging words. I wrote it some years ago with a view to getting it published. But it is not as easy as that. To find the right publisher is one thing and even then most of them do not accept unsolicited material. Very difficult. So I put it here to see what happens.
