Bloom Where You're Planted
"Bloom where you're planted",
my mama did say,
as I yearned to uproot
and, root-bound, make away...
My dreams were afar
and enshrined in a cloud...
"Bloom where you're planted"
she'd still chant aloud.
And I'd think to myself,
"I am better than this...
my garden of choice
echos no serpent's hiss!"
Yet, all she could say was
"Bloom, darlin, bloom!
Blossom with joy, not with
grudging and gloom!"
And I'd shake my head
in bewildered amaze...
what does she know
of my Destiny's gaze?"
Youth is deceptive,
arrogant, fleet...
and all too damned often,
dreams never do meet
reality's presence and
vanish in cloud...but still
I can hear her voice
ringing out loud...
"Bloom where you're planted,
Girl, bloom for the King!"
and I'd stand mystified
by the tune she would sing.
And then she was taken
to enter new gates,
to walk new horizons,
completing her Fates...
But her words have lived on
in the hearts she adorned,
and today I recall
those words I once scorned...
and, thus, is my goal
as I'm seasoned with age,
those words of my mama
were words of a sage,
Now, "Bloom Where You're Planted"
is the song that I sing,
to bring to this garden
both beauty and zing!
