Understanding Your Pet

Understanding Your Pets

I have discovered an outstanding author, Dr. Temple Grandin, PH.D.. She is an author that writes from an animal's perspective. To say she is an amazing individual would be a gross understatement. She has an uncanny ability to understand the thoughts and actions of all types of animals. Whether you wonder why your dog is aggressive towards your friends or why your cat knows when to meet you at the door, she will give you sharp insight into the minds of your beloved pets.

The amazing aspect of her insight is partially drawn from her own experience with Autism. She has also written many wonderful books about Autism and Asperger's. Her personal experience with Autism can be found in the book, The Way I See It. However, if you read any of her books written on animal behavior, you will find personal references to her life and living with Autism.

Whether you are a lover of pets or you are seeking knowledge and understanding in regards to animal behavior, Animals in Translation and Animals Make Us Human are two reads to add to your list.

If you like to read books in order written then start with Animals In Translation. Her focus is translating animal behavior in general so that those of us less evolved creatures, humans, can understand what is going on in the minds of the more evolved creatures.

Animals Make Us Human delves further into explaining specific animal behavior by looking at the main reasons that animals act out. She discusses fear and rage and how to address the basis of your pet's fear and rage in order to modify their outward behavior.

I think most of us that love our animals wished that there was a "Dog Whisperer" for cats. However, if you are the owner of a cat (or from the cat's perspective, you are their human) you completely understand the saying, "It is like herding cats". These books give you valuable insight into a cat's mind.

I recommend either book and if you are looking for additional information on Autism and Asperger's look for her books in the Social Science/Psychology section of your bookstore.
