He has whipped the public into such a frenzy that his newly translated book, 1Q84, is selling out as soon as it hits the shops.
People in countries all over the world have waited patiently in line overnight outside of shops waiting patiently to buy a copy.
In France, a massive 70,000 copies were released. Shops sold out within a week! As the book gets reprinted, all the copies are selling out straight away.

Paul Bogaards of Knopf, the book's US publishers, has been quoted as saying that the hype surrounding this book is more commonly seen in teen literature, like the Harry Potter books.

At the time of writing this, 1Q84 is already in Amazon's top 20, despite it not having been released yet.
Order your copy now to make sure you get one. it will be available from the 25th of October
1Q84 is roughly based on George Orwell's 1984. The 'Q' is a play on words. In Japanese, the number 9 sounds like Q.
While the storyline has not been released officially at this point, we are of the understanding that it revolves around two main characters.
One is a female serial killer, the other a male author. Their lives eventually come together although they start off in parallel universes.
The book is 1600 pages long, and for the first time in a long time, the preferred method of reading is by print book instead of through an e-reader.
1Q84 is split into two parts, Book 1 and Book 2, as you can see on the Amazon capsules to the right here.
Haruki Murakami has authored several books, which have garnered him an international following never before seen in a Japanese author.
According to Harvard professor Jay Rubin, who is one of the two people set the task of translating this huge volume into English, Japanese literature is traditionally not popular in the West.
He mentioned novelist Yukio Mishima who gained popularity in the post-war era, but even he had nothing on the scale of popularity Haruki Murakami is generating.
It was Murakami's 5th book, Norwegian Wood, that initially brought him a huge fan base in 1987.
It became a cult classic and sold more than 4 million copies in Japan alone. By the year 2000 it had been translated into English. Norwegian Wood, named after the beatles song, has sold more than 2.5 million copies in the US.
The literary history of Haruki Murakami is as follows:
- 1982 - A Wild Sheep Chase - his first literary success
- 1987 - Norwegian Wood
- 1997 - Underground - nonfiction written about the experiences of people on the 1995 Tokyo subway poison attack
