Japanese author Haruki Murakami has done something no non-English writer has done before.

He has whipped the public into such a frenzy that his newly translated book, 1Q84, is selling out as soon as it hits the shops.

People in countries all over the world have waited patiently in line overnight outside of shops waiting patiently to buy a copy.

In France, a massive 70,000 copies were released. Shops sold out within a week! As the book gets reprinted, all the copies are selling out straight away.

In his native Japan, when 1Q84 was released in 2009, more than 1 million copies sold within its first month.

The books of Haruki Murakami are number one bestsellers in almost every country in the world from Germany to Australia, Italy to the USA, and have been translated in to 42 languages.

Paul Bogaards of Knopf, the book's US publishers, has been quoted as saying that the hype surrounding this book is more commonly seen in teen literature, like the Harry Potter books.

He added that the interest in 1Q84 is unprecedented in a book that has been translated into English.

At the time of writing this, 1Q84 is already in Amazon's top 20, despite it not having been released yet.

Order your copy now to make sure you get one. it will be available from the 25th of October

1Q84 is roughly based on George Orwell's 1984. The 'Q' is a play on words. In Japanese, the number 9 sounds like Q.

While the storyline has not been released officially at this point, we are of the understanding that it revolves around two main characters.

One is a female serial killer, the other a male author. Their lives eventually come together although they start off in parallel universes.

The book is 1600 pages long, and for the first time in a long time, the preferred method of reading is by print book instead of through an e-reader.

1Q84 is split into two parts, Book 1 and Book 2, as you can see on the Amazon capsules to the right here.

Haruki Murakami has authored several books, which have garnered him an international following never before seen in a Japanese author.

According to Harvard professor Jay Rubin, who is one of the two people set the task of translating this huge volume into English, Japanese literature is traditionally not popular in the West.

He mentioned novelist Yukio Mishima who gained popularity in the post-war era, but even he had nothing on the scale of popularity Haruki Murakami is generating.

It was Murakami's 5th book, Norwegian Wood, that initially brought him a huge fan base in 1987.

It became a cult classic and sold more than 4 million copies in Japan alone. By the year 2000 it had been translated into English. Norwegian Wood, named after the beatles song, has sold more than 2.5 million copies in the US.

The literary history of Haruki Murakami is as follows:

  • 1982 - A Wild Sheep Chase - his first literary success
  • 1987 - Norwegian Wood
  • 1997 - Underground - nonfiction written about the experiences of people on the 1995 Tokyo subway poison attack
  • 2002 - Kafka on the Shore
  • 2008 - What I Talk About When I Talk About Running, autobiography
  • 2011 - release of Norwegian Wood movie

1Q84 was just released in the UK today, Ghaelach (that's got to be a Gaelic name!) so Amazon will have it in stock, if they haven't sold out already. (link to Amazon UK above, below the last video).

Hi Isabel.

Well spotted. I wanted a pseudonym that was a bit different and while i have this love with Ireland and as my parents where born in Ireland thought it was good.

I'll give Amazon UK a go and if not i'll try Amazon.de(Germany)as i live here now.

Take care Isabel.

“If you only read the books that everyone else is reading, you can only think what everyone else is thinking.”

? Haruki Murakami, Norwegian Wood .

Memories are what warm you up from the inside. But they're also what tear you apart.”

? Haruki Murakami, Kafka on the Shore

this last quote is one of my favourites of his.

I came across him a year ago & cannot stop reading his writings.

I stumble onto a reference to Murakami, and decided to see what the folks here at hp had to say about him. Looks like his books might be right up my ally! Thanks for the info-- think I might check out Norwegian Wood!

Anaya, that is a great idea. Norwegian Wood is superb.

Ghalach, well done you! Not long to wait for it, you should maybe write a review when you've read it. I think a lot of people will be interested.

i have got it and have read the book to the end. what an exhausting effort i had done. remind that the book was release in 3 volume on it's native edition. yet, i never ever gonna regret it. it's a wonderful book. and in the end of book 2 i think it's gonna be another bitter end as same as his other book Norwegian Wood and Dance Dance Dance. but fortunately Aomame finally made up her mind to find her lover instead of suicide. things that won't be cross into lame Naoko's mind from Norwegian Wood.
