Ol’ Cookie’s got his dutch-oven hanging over the fire-coals red
He’s cookin’ beans, side meat, black coffee, and hot corn bread
That chuck wagon is a welcome sight to pokes at the end of day
Nothin’ like some good hot food except maybe a raise in pay
Them beans has been a-soakin’ and a simmerin’ pert near all day
Cookie says that what makes ‘em good; makes ‘em taste that way
That corn pone with some butter ‘n honey is really a great treat
It’ll go down well with that black coffee and some hot side meat
We’ll fill our bellies with this grub and lick our tin plates clean
Ol’ Cookie will spit and cuss the whole time tryin’ to act so mean
But we know of his big heart and his love of us old cowboys
Taking care and feedin’ us grub is one of his greatest joys
Cookie is a cantankerous cuss, says he got no use for a saddle bum
He can call us anything as long as he cooks grub and gives us some
We’d ride across hell’s half-acre just save his ornery cussin’ neck
Anyone messes with Cookie, well, they’ll answer to us by heck
We’ve lick the old bean pot clean and ate up all the side of meat
Now Cookie brings out an apple pie cobbler; a surprise sweet treat
We’ll eat it too; can’t help ourselves as that aroma pulls us in
Then we’ll sleep it off, work tomorrow, and do this once again
Ol’ Cookie’s got the dirty pot ‘n pans down in the stream to soak
He’s smoking his pipe leaned back against the wagon wheel spoke
Cookie’s got a dream or two still livin’ somewhere in his head
One of these days he’ll chase it too, when he get all us boys all fed.
