The Call

Source

Hi, how are you?

How nice to hear from you, you really have no clue.

I know you have a lot to do,

But it's always good to hear from you.

You make me laugh, you make me smile.

Always nice to chat with you awhile.

To call you, I wish I had the time

But time is just so hard to find.

Just remember that I love you

And call me again real soon.

Or, maybe, with everything I do

I'll find the time to call you, too.

And just for fun. . .Why Haven't I Heard From You?

We are always pondering "why" in our life's relationships.

Sometimes pondering "why", yes. This was more tongue and cheek. Had a conversation similar to that one with someone I've known for years on end.....LOL...After being told how much she appreciates my calls and to call her again soon, I was left wondering why I always have to be the one to make the call if she really cares so much. Oh, well. Not a big deal, as I really don't mind doing it, but I get busy too, and sometimes months on end go before picking up the phone to say hello and that I'm thinking of someone. And sometimes the thought becomes almost a regret when it's too late to say "I love you" one more time.

That reminds me that I have an old friend I haven't called or heard from in a while. I always wonder if she changed her phone number, or if she's busy, and months go by... I can relate.

So, give her a call while you're thinking about her, Kathryn! It's always nice to know when someone thinks about me, but when I'm told by someone I don't speak with that often that they think about me often, I can't help but wonder if it is really all that often I cross his or her mind. :) But, that said, I'm just as guilty sometimes.

Oh this is cute and fun! Isn't it funny (not ha ha funny, but odd funny) how we get so caught up in our day-to-day lives we don't take the time to call/visit people who actually mean a lot to us. It usually takes me running into someone and thinking, "gosh, I've missed them". We should try to make the time, it's too late once they're gone. Awesome shan!

Yeah. Not really ha ha funny, but funny. I love people and I love my family and friends deeply, but there is really only one person I keep in contact with on a fairly regular basis now. She'll call me or contact me via FB if I don't call her. We talk several times a week, though there have been times when it has been much longer.

Then there are friends and family that I speak to once a year, if that. It's crazy, but life is busy, I guess. Everyone has their own schedule to keep. But, the older I get, the more I realize people matter more than anything else. So, I try to balance it all and to keep in touch as regularly as I can with people. I say try because I fail miserably sometimes.

I think we're probably more alike than we even realized. The few people that I have regularly contact with... I can probably count of one finger... and have room left, lol :D ... it's not a personal thing... I feel kind of bad, but days fly by and I'm sure they're busy too. Like you, the only way that even works is usually if they reach out to me... I just get caught up, can't do it. I've let a lot of friendship just kind of slip by... but hey, we have the memories right? When our circumstances in life change, so do the people in our circle. Well, I'll try to remind you every couple of weeks to reach out and "call" someone... and then you can remind me, 'cause I'll probably forget after telling you :D

shanmarie profile image

shanmarie 3 years ago from Texas Author

I am usually the one to do the reaching out. I've tried a few times to keep regular contact with others, but it just is usually not successful for various reasons. So, yeah. . .one friend that I speak with that often now and a lot of phone calls similar to the poem!

Alright, twinie, I'll remind you in a few days - if I remember to remember to remind you. ;)

Ha ha ha... I just have to think of who'll I'll call in the meantime :D

shanmarie profile image

Haha! If you have to think about to who to call, it isn't someone you care about in the first place! LOL That's my point? My friend for instance, says she's always grateful that I call and that she thinks of me often. . .and I'm kind of thinking when she says that, "you've got a funny way of showing it if you really think of me that often." Not even an email to say hey. Granted, she used to write letters, but not even that in the last several years.

Oh, okay then... I guess I'll just remind you :D

No... but that's kind of how I feel too, the phone works both ways and if I have to stop and call someone who I am so close with... maybe they aren't so close with me? But, ya never know, they might be on the other end fighting the same battle?

Oh, yeah...it's not the be all or end all of a friendship. . .unless it is your boyfriend not calling. ;)

I love the confessional side of you Shan Marie (whether it's fictional or not) because it shows your skill at the songwriting genre and this one works beautifully because of the monologue theme in it.

Sending you warm wishes for a great Saturday night at the Grand Ole Opry - from Colin and his cats at lake erie time 8:50pm

Thanks, Colin! This one was kind of fun to write. It wasn't meant to really be that serious.

Short, but quite sweet! I think this probably happens to a large percentage of the population. Busy lives seem to leave less time for people we really care about, and the weeks slip away.

You express it so well. Sometimes I get so busy I think I couldn't even find the time to call myself. lol However we must find the time to keep in touch with friends and people we really care about because life has a way of slipping by.

No time to call yourself, Gypsy? Then you really are in trouble! LOL. Take some time for yourself, too. Hehe.

Oh, I am terrible with phone calls. The only person I call regularly is my mom. Otherwise, I much prefer emailing. Your poem reminds me of life before email though, when I did talk on the phone with friends more!! :-) Lurana

Life before email? What's that? Hahaha. . middle school? high school? Truthfully, I'm not much of a phone person myself. That said, I like the personal aspect of it - hearing and connecting with someone's voice that I can't be with in person.

Enjoyed your hub.Even with all of todays technology when you can call anywhere all over the world no body calls anymore.I laugh how the world has changed. When I grew up computers were not even mentioned in random conversation.Pay phones were used to make a call.To dial the operator would come on and say ...deposit ten sense please.....Reading your comments and realizing how out of touch I am.It's tough getting old.

shanmarie profile image

shanmarie 3 years ago from Texas Author

Haha...I guess payphones are nearly obsolete now, aren't they? Even those that still work cost more than a dime or even a quarter to use. Last time I remember using a payphone was maybe 9 or 10 yrs ago after I was rear ended in my parents car, which I had down in TX and they were back home in another state. I was turning and she was doing about 50mph, so it made a big mess.

And computers. . .I remember very well learning to use the internet in high school and dialup. Now, my kids are already using the computers. The youngest is almost 4, but he can play games fairly well.

Out matched out played.Kids today are born with a remote control or cell phone in their hand.I am so lucky to be typing correctly.(lol)

You sure about that? I've recently learned that it is no longer customary to double space after a period, but I can't break the habit. lol

I am probably the only person in the world who text in full sentences.Every time I go to use short abbreviations I hear my grade school teachers voices saying you should know better.Where did you learn that.My 4th grader can write better than y0u.Use your brain. If someone jumps off a bridge are you going to follow.Writing the right way is always proper. If you write bad you will speak badly. My last high school teacher was some thirty years ago.I heard kids in school don't even have to learn to write cursive anymore.Nobody uses it.Everyone uses the computer instead.

shanmarie profile image

shanmarie 3 years ago from Texas Author

Yes, heard the same. It's sad they're doing away with cursive. ANd funny you should mention the bridge cliche...I'm writing a hub now with that in it. haha
