The Art of War and Romance of the Three Kingdoms? How about the Tale of Genji also? They are Asian, but they are classics.

The 'Man in the iron mask', 'The old curiosity shop' and 'Black Beauty' are a few I think that you have missed out in your comprehensive list.

Thanks for the suggestion pandy. By the way, Sense and Sensibility was written by Jane Austen, not Jane Jane Eyre.

Scarlet Letter is an extremely strong classic... just saying. How come no one reads Bless Me Ultima? My teacher forced me to read that; it's not too bad either. umm The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett, Sense and Sensibility by Jane Eyre, Cannery Row by John Steinbeck, Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov.... just a few i believe you missed:)

Troy: Thank you for your suggestion, added your suggestion to the list. There are so many novels that can be considered classic and antique. That is why I include the ones in th comments.

Not sure how you missed "On the Road" or Lawrence's "Lady Chatterley's Lover" but they are both great reads.

Eobinson Crusoe=best book of ALL time. I enjoyed every second of it. Defoe is a genius.

Aley Martin: I haven't read Bierce, but I would love to. I like to read, unfortunately I just don't have the time to do so.

AJHargrove: Actually this list is far from being complete. If all "classics" were to be listed it would be thousand of books/works.

Are these works you recommend, or are you writing them so we know they're out there?

Have read most of these. "Dombey and Son" by Dickens is another favorite, as well as Camus "The Stranger", and Voltaire's "Candide" and "The Death of Ivan Ilych" and Flaubert. Love the Naturalists and also Enlightenment writers, and of course...the Russians! Have you read Ambrose Bierce? He is another wonderful short story writer.

Not all, but a lot of them. I'll read them when I'll have some more time.
