Dance My Love

They had been

Sweethearts in high school

The golden couple

Who seemed to have it all

Never having to worry about

Finding love

They shared it all

That special kind of glow

That only they seemed to know

So it went on the came the prom

Everyone looked and sighed

It only they had such a love

The prom that many girls

Only dream of

The years they came and went

For this golden couple

Who appeared more and more in love

It seemed that it was inevitable

That they would be together

For now and a whole lifetime more

It was five years down the road

That he chose

To surprise her for her birthday

When family and friends would gather

To present her with a golden band

Making her his love forever

Oh, how he anticipated the joy

That she and everyone would share

His love was so very true

He thought his heart would burst

Came the day and it seemed perfect

A day full of sunshine

The night he was sure

Would be magical

While his friends helped him

To prepare

She was thinking

Of how to tell him

That it was time to say good-bye

The love that had once sparkled

So in her eyes

Had slowly dwindled and died

Now she only felt a heart so heavy

Having to tell him

That she wanted to go her own way

Came that special time

And it near took her breath away

It was perfect

But now she dreaded what he had to say

Somewhere the signals

Had crossed and she just didn’t feel the same

So when she knew what he was longing for

She quietly took him aside

Told him it was no longer her dream too

He’d always hold a place in her heart

A dear and loved friend

Just nothing else anymore

At first he thought he could hear

His heart breaking

Sort of like the sound of glass

That suddenly shattered

He looked at her

She at him

And he realized while he had been living

That dream of eternal love and devotion

He’d missed the signs

That would have told him otherwise

So they agreed to make this night special

No one needed to know

So they danced just as close as ever before

Everyone still sighed

But every dance was their last dance

Last time they would be together

At least for a long while

They would survive

They still had one another for support

So they danced on into the night

They kissed with trembling lips

They danced to the love

They once had

Danced and said their last good-bye

As the first rays of the sun

Filled the sky

What a beautiful but so sad poem, which happens so many times to people, I loved the ending, the bittersweet last dance, wonderful!

Beautiful words, a bit sad, but that's reality.

I love that the couple ended the relationship sweetly, with no animosity. The last dance is the perfect way to remember what they once had. Parting is such sweet sorrow.

Beautiful poem, Rasma.

Rasma, this was so well done I was almost too lost in the art of how you did it to actually feel the pain. Like honey and lemon juice in a tea, you made sweet and sour come together for me.

Good job, very captivating and so bittersweet. The ending was beautiful no matter, it was excellent.

Yup, I'm a follower, Genna, Nell and Bill said it best. Imagine though how wonderful to be able to end such a passionate romance in a friendly way.

Voted up, awesome, and beautiful.

You captured their love and the essence of enjoying it. Then the signals of life changing and falling out of passion and the fondness of caring and sharing. A sad ending but each parting after one last time together. Moving and so real.

Thank you Michael. You know some of my poem are sprinkled with some truths that I know or have gone through and purely inspired by songs that I love.
