Deer in Summer ... A Poem

For John...

Deer in Summer

The deer did not run…

he paused in the dense green laurel,

his eyes gathering of us

and the woodland stream.

How close we were…

stilled in our modesty.

Lowering his head

he drank of the shallow flows,

silent in grace…

no speed of spirit waste

or remembrance lost.

We were all of this place…

the knowing of it,

the flawless

savored moments.

How soon would we run…

how far and how long?

No one could tell us

the last of the when...

of sweet sense and touch…

the being and desire of us.

Such beauty is not found

in ancient voice

nor in shadows on a page…

Like the tender breeze

drifting with time,

....we only know

....what is

in the garden before the fall.

You pen hears its own music, is graced with its own tune, is remarkable in its melody. A wizards wand I say, with the deepest respect.

Dear Lady;

I read this two times my friend.

Even your free verse has melody to it. Your words are your own – no one else’s.

There is a kind of elegant and subtle suspension of moments in time as we know it and then – bam - the meaning hits you with a velvet punch. ‘The garden before the fall’ was a perfect metaphor. Wow beautiful.

@DnWW

Very perceptive; that has a lot to do with the poem. I was also worried that no one would catch on to the “garden before the fall.” As always, it’s good to see you my friend, and thank you.

Thank you Mck and thank you Ruby.

There are moments in our lives that transcend how we think of ourselves and our relationship to the world. And the manner in which we try to control over our daily lives…like the deer, we really can’t and that’s okay because there is soooo much beauty. It’s a shame that we often miss it.

Poetcrtcs 5 years ago

Pretty poem Geena. But I think the meaning is lost. What does the part of the deer drinking at a stream have to do with the rest of the poem?

This is why people don't read poetry. You guys make it too hard to understand.

Genna East profile image

Genna East 5 years ago from Massachusetts, USA Author

Hello Poetcrtcs...

I’m sorry you feel that way about poetry.

The deer drank from the stream as we drink from the stream, but not in the same way. The moment was the union, the understanding and realization of that beautiful moment; and how we are all from “that place.” It has much to do with nature…of the outdoors and the nature of ourselves as well as the connection. These are moments wherein we rise above self; the combination of spirituality, beauty, nature, realization, survival, the concept of time, etc. To be overly simplistic, it connects the disconnect. The more I try to explain this, the more I fear the words get away from me. It simply was.

I hope this helps, and thank you for stopping by. There are wonderful poets, here, on the Hub. Please click on their comment avatars and read some of their wonderful contributions. I think you will be surprised by what you find. Take care. :-)

A gentle kind of peace fell over me this morning as I read this just before dawn. And the music that accompanied your creation is sublime...music has a way of carrying me to another place...in this case, to the place within your poem.

Angels are once again on the way, Genna.

And have a lovely Fourth. ps

Thank you. I see our mortality closely aligned with nature in ways that are mysterious, yet profoundly beautiful. In a way, giving/showing our appreciation for these elements and experiences are the same as giving our thanks to God. I'm happy you enjoyed the poem.
