Do You Want to Be a Freelance Writer of Short Stories?

You have decided to be a Freelance Writer. Maybe you are a bit of a fanciful person who is good at coming up with ideas. You have a good imagination so you think you would like to write short stories. Short story writing is a pleasant and enjoyable endeavor. Let's take a look at some background on short story writing.

Short Story Format

To begin with it is important to know that a short story is a work of fiction. The length falls between 2,000 and 8,000 words. Every short story has a plot which is active and is about actions that the characters of the story perform. It is helpful if you can make a story summary in about four lines to start with. Then, lengthen the summary out to an outline.

Elements of Short Stories.

A short story is made up of around eight elements. They are characters, conflict, organization, dialogue, setting, details, theme and mood. You will have to make the conflict or struggle of the characters intense to hold the readers attention. The story should also be placed in an interesting venue and historical time, which is what the setting consists of.

From Outline to Draft

Now that you have a working outline, it is time to extend it to the first draft. You do this primarily by understanding that the story has a three part structure. First, you write the opening in which action should start immediately. In the middle of the story the readers should feel that they know the characters more than before. The ending of the story should bring the conflict to a conclusion.

Types of Short Stories

There are many types of short stories. Some are mysteries, science fiction and fantasy. You should decide which type of story appeals to you most. This could be determined by what type of story you usually read for pleasure. Or draw a story from your own life. It is fine to switch around from time to time. You certainly don't have to always write the same type of story.

You could become a Freelance Writer of short stories. You must simply learn the short story form. Understand the elements that makeup short stories. Write an outline then write a first draft. Revise the story until it is just perfect. Why not write your first short story right now?

Hi Yecall, This was useful as to how to plan and write a short story. It would have been good to include how and where to try and market your stories as a freelance writer. Maybe you include that in another hub. Cheers.

I agree with Jodah. If you have experience in marketing short story fiction, that too would be very helpful.
