Don’t make me love you (A poem by Martie Coetser)

Source

Yesterday we were strangers,

happy-go-lucky lone rangers.

Today we’ve met,

conned by Kismet.

Let me play with you

Let me enjoy you

Let me just like you

Don’t make me love you.

Yesterday you were somebody -

A great spirit in a body.

Sparkling brown eyes,

Twinkling no lies.

Let me play with you

Let me enjoy you

Let me just like you

Don’t make me love you.

Today in my private zone

You are magic shifting my tone;

Your lips entice,

Your hands excite.

Let me play with you

Let me enjoy you

Let me just like you

Don’t make me love you.

Tomorrow you may be gone

To be just another bygone,

a memory,

history.

So let me play with you

Let me enjoy you

Let me just like you

Don’t ever make me love you.

Hello Martie,

The poem is lovely, it evokes passion. I loved the picture selections and wonderful quotes.

Passion and reservation, that is what I see. This is really an interesting poem, Martie and a very enjoyable read. The quote from Woody Allen is a plus! It makes you think.

Hi Martie~! Well, you've done it again...amazingly wise and deep acknowledgement of this crazy life we live...players in a massive eqic journey through years and lives, experiences, celebrations and regrets AND...your followup quotes are so applicable...and I am one who will underscore the idea that to lack love; to not have ever loved is a loss, tragedy and suffering even greater than to hurt in love...even when we are not even aware of it...the effect; none the less, is there. All ups, Martie! You continue to amaze with your intuition and empathy for we, fallible humans. Kathy

Lucky Cats, you always ooze with tenderness and unconditional love for your fellowman; I just love to see you in my corner. Your comment reveals your above-average insight in life's and love's issues.

Fortunately, we are not able to resist love, we may make all the plans in the world to do so, but it comes like an element of nature, or a meteor out of space. Sometimes with force, sometimes unseen, like a virus, to grow in us. Once in us, it can only be killed by a similar (negative) force... But I've learned we can control love once we have it; we can hide it... show it... bury it... whatever we feel like doing with it.

I am so glad you're back, Kathy! I look forward to read your pennings :)

Marcoujor, you always make me smile... Mmm, I guess the secret of happiness lies in 'as long as it pleases you'. At my age I have no reason at all to put up with anything that does not please me. It is certainly a matter of 'do it until I had enough of it.' But then also accept (without feeling hurt) when it stops before I had enough of it.

Now to determine the difference between like and love...

Lots of hugs from me to you, Maria!

Ruchira, to be honest, for me it is totally impossible to not get attached to people I spend time with. We humans are magnets, we do attract each other. There is actually no way one magnet can resist the attraction of another magnet or reject any attractable object. I think we should just accept reality and go with the flow, wherever it may take us. Thank you for your lovely comment :)

Don't make me love you?

let me not count the ways

for what else is love

when nothings left to say

Don't make me love you?

so we'er just to cuddle and play

esperimenting together

things we best not say

Don't make me love you

but who is kidding who

how then are we to hide

feelings real and true

now my soul stands here naked

my heart exaposed and bare

do I see a subtile smirk

perhaps you're afraid to care

must65gt, what a thought-provoking poetic comment! Of course one cannot hide true feelings, one can but only hope that true feelings don't shoot roots too deep into one's sensitive soul, where it could cause severe pain by simply moving in the wrong direction.

I am, indeed, too afraid to care. I am afraid of pain, I fear disappointments and departures, I fear LOVE... and I have no idea why my fear looks like a smirk on my face?

May I give you a tip: Women who fear Love prefer not to see a man's naked soul and bare heart. That will make them run away...

Thanks you so much for your thought-provoking comment, must65gt!

I agree with SannelL, I to am set in my ways, matters of the heart are past tense for me. I simply want great friendships and the scent of a woman in my life. She keeps her place and I keep mine, that way we keep it interesting at all times.

Living together 24/7 often creates to many unpleasant kinks in what could be maintained as a great relationship if we kept our distances and own abodes. I like enjoy making dinners at each others places to enjoy them together and share desert and lick each others fingers to candlelight with of course our favorite tunes in the background. Now I just have to find that right lady to share with? LoL Any takers?

"Let me play with you

Let me enjoy you

Let me just like you

Don’t make me love you."

Also let's tango now that's LOVE..... And I love to play.

MartieCoetser profile image

MartieCoetser 4 years ago from South Africa Author

Victoria, yes, indeed, I wish that, and maybe it is possible. Who knows? Maybe somebody in Hubland can tell us if it is really possible to play with, enjoy and like another person without developing any form of love for him/her.

With love I mean a feeling that may include words/phrases such as 'care for', 'being interested in', 'wishing him/her peace and happiness', 'wanting and needing him/her with intense desire', 'looking forward to see him/her', et cetera, and then bear all the consequences of these feelings.

Thanks for your thought-provoking comment. I'll see you soon in your corner :))

Gypsy, is it really possible to have fun with Someone without loving him/her? One can but only hope that Someone does not provide too much fun to enjoy, or that he/she does not do things that could inspire Cupido to shoot us with a fatal arrow....

Love certainly hurts, and it makes us greedy, suspicious, jealous, vulnerable, et cetera, at least until we reach the stage where we feel secure.

Thank you so much for your lovely comment :)

Vincent, believe me, I would have been that woman in your life if the damn Atlantic was not between us. Lol!

Yes, your idea is also mine. But let me share my knowledge and experience with you...

I've had that kind of relationship. Remember, I am a divorcee since 1991 and I have never spent a single year in a cloister. So I can assure you that 'that' kind of relationship is not possible without love....

Your heart is involved... your emotions get stirred by the coming and goings of that person keeping his/her place and interests...

Just saying... I don't want you to long for a relationship that is not at all possible.... As I am doing in this poem of mine. Ha-ha!

But who knows, maybe it is possible. I don't know. Only those who have the experience will be able to enlighten us. And now you know how courageous am I, so I will probably try my luck... :)

Now let's tango :))

Lol The smirk remark related to humanism where opposite facial expressions are used to hide true feelings that are often misconstrued by others. The “now my soul stands here naked, my heart exposed and bare do I see a subtle smirk“ related to anguished hope of returned affection and the vulnerability felt inwardly. The last line where it has: “Perhaps you're afraid to care. Spoke of defense and self-protection by offering her an excuse and a way out. As you probably know authors often write poetry that requires thought by the reader to look deeper into the words written. In real life we hide our feelings from others, but in poetry the feelings must be written to bring in the readers so they can feel what the author is feeling.

Must65gt ~ thank you for your insightful explanation. Did my reply bring you under the impression that I did not understand your poem? This is such a perfect example of how people 'hear' what they are able to 'hear' in a certain situation, and then to reply on what they've 'heard'. And one-two-three they misunderstand each other completely, and the more they try to explain, the more they misunderstand each other... And just because they see the same issue from different perspectives.

Your poem and explanation of it is extremely interesting. Thank you so much for enhancing my hub with it.

Take care!

MartieCoetser profile image

Hi Nell, well, I had only two opportunities since I regained my single status in 2009. One in 2010 (53 days), which was actually only a hard and difficult course in con-artists cum drug addicts cum alcoholics and their behavior, and then the one last year with David, (51 days) which was a fantastic course in 'How to be happy' and 'How to cut people who upsets me out of my life'. David will always have a special place in my heart. Today, exactly a year ago, he arrived in SA. Until now he was one of the best 'things' that has ever happened to me.

Oh, and I've done some dating since the beginning of this year, but not one of the guys I've met has managed to arouse in me the slightest desire to play with them.

But now this one...

The best way to understand the 'phenomenon of attraction' is to study the hormones and chemicals in our poor, mortal bodies...

Oh yes, I look forward to gather wonderful memories... A goal I've set for myself for David and which I've kept ever since ~ Make at least one good memory per day."

But still scared. For my own fiery emotions. I am not going to allow them to upset me in any way. I had enough of them. Lol!

Thanks for popping in and give me your opinion, Nell. I will catch up in your corner soon; heaven knows I am so behind with reading and commenting.

fpherj48 - what a lovely compliment - I feel like one who has managed to move a mountain. But I don't really regard myself as a poet per excellence, you know. Writing poems for me is almost like doing crossword puzzles. Using my own 'mold of syllabuses' - to ensure rhythm - and to rhyme in someway or another, or not at all - I simply try to meet the challenge to say what I need/want to say. Very simple. You can do it. I bet you can. And I would even dare to think that you will love this game with words...

Thank you so much for clicking in, fpherj. I really feel honored because you've taken the time to read this in spite of the fact that you don't like poetry. I will be in your corner before the end of this weekend, and who knows, maybe I find a poem in there?

Oh if only it were that simple... The only way to avoid love and hurt would be to have a lifetime of one night stands and never see each other again. But what value would our lives be then? If we never fall in love we simply do not live. It is the emotions, love , pain, pleasure and hurt that make us who we are. What poetry would exist if love did not exist.

Loved this piece Martie. Love your talent

MartieCoetser profile image

MartieCoetser 4 years ago from South Africa Author

Hi my wise friend, Rosemary :)

After reading your sentence - "But what value would our lives be then?", I am all of a sudden able to 'diagnose' my dislike in one night stands. I need quality and (excuse me) quantity. Both not obtainable through fly-by-night-occasions. I know, because I have tried it. (At my age there is not much I have not at least tried. With the Bible's permission, of course: "Tried/inspect/test everything and keep doing what is Good." I can't remember the exact words.) Indeed, too, what is Good is not always Healthy.

Of course, how sketchy would our life be if we had never loved, and how would we knew what quality happiness is if we had never experienced quality unhappiness? And so on...

Thank you, Rosemary, for your profound comment. Have a great day. (Saturday 10:00am SA)

Hi picklesandrufus, with this one I was really not sure whether I should call it a poem or lyrics. I've decided on a poem, because poems can/should easily be regarded as possible lyrics, while the average reader don't easily see lyrics as poems. Actually it is all about perception and personal interpretation according to some or the other 'rule' set by some or the other clever school demanding order instead of chaos...

It is really good - so inspiring - to know you've enjoyed the read. Take care, I look forward to visit your profile :))

The problem with love is that it sometimes is sustained by a 'chain of obligation,' of service, because more often than not it is broken by one partner for their own self interest. The wise lover should build their hearts foundation on what belongs to them, not on what belongs to another. Apologize if this doesn't make sense here Martie but it's what I was inspired to write after reading your poem. Take care and Happy Easter my friend.

MartieCoetser profile image

MartieCoetser 4 years ago from South Africa Author

Alastar Packer – You used a word that has given wings to my thoughts. ‘Belong’. I would say this is The Concept causing the most problems in all relationships. It has to do with the claiming of territory – an instinctive urge of most animals, including primates, and therefor including humans. And, of course, this is Nature… natural…. an essential urge in order to survive.

At a certain point we reckon something/someone ‘belongs’ to us. If only we can get it in our heads that NOTHING belongs to us. We are not owners, but tenants. Even our own body is on a rental scheme… And yes, we should maintain it, not selfish, but with respect and consideration for all other tenants on Earth.

Maybe, if we have this perception, we will enjoy peace and joy?

Musing...

Thanks for your comment, Alastar :))

'Don't ever make me love you.' Beautiful, Martie, philosophical, and profound. Also impossible. The heart has no brain cells that I am aware of. Which is probably why we can 'fall' for someone with such force. Woody's quote was perfect - funny, but true. Suffering is often allied with love, however we might wish it to be otherwise.

In the meantime, my lovely Afrikaans poet, never give up searching and enjoying. And live in the moment. Works for me.

drbj, in the beginning of this century I've finally mastered the art of living in the moment and ever since then I'm getting better and better(er). I had one or two slips, you know that stumbling over a memory and then falling head first into the black hole called Past, but thanks to friends like you I got out like a cat out of a swimming pool - before you could blink an eye.

I love to love... my relatives, my friends, my fellowman and in particular I love to love ONE special man. But I am no longer willing to bear with any pain coming with love. I have grown feathers like a duck; I no longer absorb any negative vibes. If those vibes are like arrows, I simply build a wall without doors and windows between me and the shooter. (Dave from Wales taught me how to do this.) I wish I was able to do this since the day I was born, but I guess I needed all the pain I had to endure in order to be who I am today. I don't need any more, I don't want any more and I will not take any more from nobody, least of all from people who think they love me. I have finally realized that my love for myself and others is special; I will never again waste a drop on somebody who don't know how to appreciate it. (I better stop; this is becoming a rant I can rather hub).

The new man in my life... Well, he is passing all tests with distinction.. I will not fall in love with him, I will not allow myself to, but in time I may develop feelings for him that might be described as love. I don't know. I am going with the flow... but the flow is not stronger than I...

I am certainly in a new phase of my life; I am not the same woman I was last year. So I am curious to see where am I going and who I am busy to become...

My life is such an adventure! I kind of feel like the main character of a novel... with no idea of the author's plot.

Thank you so much for your supportive and encouraging comment, dbrj. I truly regard you as one of my pillars of strength. Please take good care of yourself :)

Yes, Deborah, LOVE hurts. The moment a woman loves a man (or another woman for the sake of justice), he plays the strings in one's heart with his comings and goings, doings and not-doings, sayings and not-sayings and even with the tone of his voice, and so on. How many days after I've written this poem, I already realize there is no way one can have a meaningful relationship without falling in love...

'Like' quickly grow into 'love'...

Or 'hate', which is fortunately not at present in my crystal ball. Not yet....

I can literally feel invisible hands chaining me to this man.

I feel like running away... But I will feel miserable if he doesn't follow me....

Oh my!

Brian, thank you so much for your lovely, complimentary comment. Really, you've touched my heart. Sadly, we doubt our own abilities too often, we FEEL too often incompetent and unsuccessful, and then, receiving a beautiful compliment like this one of yours, we are once again filled with courage and enthusiasm. Thank you very much :)) I look forward to read your writings.

Hi Martie,

I loved this poem, as I always do with all your hubs. I wish you a very "Happy Birthday" and if I was in Africia I would bake you one of my famous Lemon Cakes.

So, I am going to read to some more of your hubs, take care.

Your Hub Friend,

Bobbi

Beautiful poem, Martie! Don't we all play that game of 'stay away from me', then eventually giving in :) Love, incrediably crazy thing, isn't it?!

Loved your poem, voting up and awesome.....

Hi LaThing, it must be Nature's way of compelling us to be careful. I think fear of rejection and the wish to rather stay in a well-known comfort zone, keeps us out of trouble and actually ensure the survival of mankind. Notice how many people grab the first opportunity to fall in love just to escape an unpleasant supposed-to-be-comfort-zone? Love is indeed an incredible crazy thing - a FORCE beyond our control. Thanks, LaThing, for your lovely comment.

Janine & Sunshine, let's hope HubPages doesn't regard this as adult content. Their 'filters' are shrinking :))) I plan to move all poems in the SHADE of erotica to another site or maybe a blog....

Lovely Martie! I guess at first we are scared to fall in love, because tomorrow comes to soon and we don't know what may happen. :)

Hi amenixflarie! I have forgotten about this poem. Yes, the older we get, the more we fear love, or rather the pain of losing it.
