Dummies Books for Dummies?

A Dummies Book Cover

Anyone who knows me knows this is a very appropriate title for me to tackle! I'm not saying I'm a dummy but the simpler layout of the Dummies books is one anyone can handle. I have been interested in the "Dummies" books for over 15 years - what better way to learn than to read a book written for Dummies! When I first began working with computers my favorite learning and teaching book was Windows for Dummies.

While the titles are laughable the contents are not. These instructional/reference books are written in separate parts that give you step by step information in an easy to read and easy to understand format.

The subtitle on every Dummies book reads, "A Reference for the Rest of Us!" That means those of us who won't understand the technical mumbo jumbo presented in technical books, will understand the Dummies books. The not so funny thing is there are now over 1,600 "Dummies" titles.

The first Dummies book was written in 1991, right around the time I discovered them. I believe the first was DOS for Dummies. As I said, I was really just starting out in computers and when I found this book I was thrilled. Something in non-technical language that I, a novice, could actually understand.

I said earlier there are 1,600 Dummies titles, what I didn't say is Dummies books have sold over 200 million copies! That's a lot of Dummies. Seriously, the best part about the Dummies books, no matter what the title, they are easy read and easy to find in a book store. They are always that yellow and black cover so you don't have to hunt when you're in a book store. Though these books started out covering technical issues they have branched out into every area you can think of.

I have to admit when I first started buying Dummies books they were around fifteen dollars now they are over twenty and many thirty or more, with a few still a little cheaper. I guess inflation attacks Dummies just like anyone else!

Since the books are written in parts and not like a novel, you can skip to any part of the book that interests you without feeling left out or like you're missing something. You can go right to the part that is what you need. Each author describes each detail in that nice and easy to understand language. You might find a joke or two thrown in but that just makes the read easier and a bit lighter.

Fellow hubbers take notice,Peter Kent has published a Dummies book; Search Engine Optimization for Dummies. This book has great references and a companion website. Kent discusses Page Rank in this book and shows that links from your own community are worth more than links from non-related websites. (By Jason McDonald, Senior SEO Instructor, JM Internet Group, Posted: January 25, 2010, http://www.jm-seo.org/blog/seo-for-dummies.html) AND there's a Google Adwords for Dummies! It contains a chapter called "The Ten (or so) Top AdWords Mistakes". Just two more great examples of the Dummies titles available and that might be of interest to some hubbers and others looking to add to their website traffic and income.

As I continued my research into the Dummies books I was more and more amazed at how many titles would help with Hub Pages, like Pinterest for Dummies. Additionally, I found lots of good hub pages about Dummies books! How about Blogging for Dummies by fundamentallife; Book Review; Personal Fiancé For Dummies by Richard Stephen; Learn to Trade Like a Wall Street Pro by DanPowers, and I know there are more.

The Dummies books are really hard to ignore. If you haven't read one you must certainly know someone who has. There are many websites with lists of the Dummies books, a good one I found was http://www.ontherunevents.com/books/dumm01.sht this page gives the name of the book, the price of the book and a link to http://www.amazon.com to buy the books.

Of course the people behind the Dummies books are no dummies. They now have their books available as EBooks. I found Singing for Dummies as a free ebook download at http://www.ebook3000.com/muisc/Singing-For-Dummies_115973.html, Linux for Dummies 8th Edition at http://ebooksfrom.blogspot.com/2008/11/linux-for-dummies-8th-edition.html, other computer related Dummies books at http://www.ebooks-space.com/ebook-tags/dummies, and there's lots more out there if you search the Internet.

Some titles I did find for purchase included Pinterest for Dummies, Green Cleaning for Dummies, EMail Marketing for Dummies, etc. A good place to purchase Dummies Ebooks of course is at dummies.com.

Dummies books are also offered on audio. I found a good site for Dummies audio books at Learn Out Loud.

Its easy to see why the Dummies books have sold so many copies. They cover just about everything you can think of (including Beer for Dummies), and are offered in every format you can think of from the printed page to Ebooks to audio. Oh, did I tell you there's an app for that? Yes, you can get them for your ipad too.

You can buy Dummies books just about anywhere from Amazon to Barnes & Noble to Target with only a slight variation in price. Of course computer stores like Staples carry them too but the selection may be limited. For the biggest selection check out Amazon.

So if you don't want to be a dummy read a Dummies book!

I love dummy books. I wish I was the genius who came up with this brilliant idea!!! There is a dummy book for just about anything, yet there are still more to be created. Excellent hub!!

Hmm, Nell, I think I already am a dummy writer ;) Seriously, there is a program on the Internet that lets you make your own covers.

Thanks so much for being the first to read this, I am always glad when you stop by! We've been 'friends' for quite some time.

Thanks SS, I wish I was the brains on the next Dummies book but somehow I don't think that'll happen.

Great idea for a Hub. I have looked at them but never bought one yet, but need a lot of help so will peruse the list.

Love the book cover!

The Dummies books are awesome. My personal favorite is 'Zombies for Zombies: Advice and Etiquette for the Living Dead.' The cost is high on some of them, but I do occasionally buy books used from Amazon. I'm just going to read and pass along anyway. I did not know there were over 1600 of them! That is a lot of dummies!

Great hub!

Oh yes! My favorite books. Seriously. They are perfect for someone like me who truly appreciates plain, simple English termonology, in step by step format. Don't you think this is the way that all things should be taught to everyone?

It's all so sensible and practical...no muss no fuss...and if you can't understand something by reading a Dummies book, you might as well give up learning altogether, right??

I have several and have lent them out to some of my dummy friends, because of course, birds of a feather, you know....

If you have an "Ollie's" Store in your area...they have complete walls full of these great black & yellow books, CHEAP...as in 5 bucks apiece. Ollie's is one of those warehouse type stores that buys out total inventories from store that close down.

I manange to find CHEAP everything...because I'm no DUMMY!!! UP +++

Mary ~ You are awesome. Lots of goodies to savor here. Too bad we don't have "bookmarks" anymore. I'll have to find a DUMMY Bookmark to save the page. Put a clip in it. Did you REALLY Write a Hubpages for Dummies or is that just the hook to get us to read your story? Sounds like you've got a decade of experience with Dummies Books, which may have gotten the idea about branding their design from "CliffNotes" which also has a similar feel and recognizability. (I think I may have made up that word.) I will have to click some of your links, like the SINGING FOR DUMMIES when I return. Sweet Dreams. Hugs, Debby

P.S. Almost forgot! Congratulations on reaching 100% HP RATING

xstatic they really are great books because everything is explained so that anyone can understand.

Georgie I guess getting the books anywhere that's cheaper is the best way to go. I had a feeling there were a lot of dummies out there (not just me).

Effer, you're always right on the ball...I'm going to Ollie's as soon as I get a chance to see what they have! Of course you're no dummy, I don't hang with dummies, only birds ;)

You too SS.

No, I didn't write a Dummies (wish I did) there is a free program on the Inet that let's you make your own covers. Maybe I should though, I bet I could make a couple of bucks. Thanks for the Congrats...I can't believe it's stayed at 100 for three full days!

Nonna glad you enjoyed my hub. I haven't found anyone yet who didn't like the dummies books.

When I first bought a computer and didn't even know how to turn it on, I bought a Dummie book for computer. It saved the day. I love the way they are written and the layout,

Voted this UP, and will share.

I'm not at all too proud to buy these books. When we bought our first house I found the one on buying a house so helpful and I knew the right questions to ask when getting a mortgage. Voted up!

They are definitely helpful Mary...I wish I was the one who came up with the idea ;)

Healthylife, we can all use some help now and then and the Dummies books are a great way to get help and wind up with the answers!

thanks for a great read. and the cover art is priceless. think i'll order the dummy book on search optimization because i can't figure out the financials of hubpages, i assume they're related, though that assumption may show my true dummy status :-)

There are some great books on making money on HubPages but I don't think there is a Dummies one Louisa.

Oh boy, Mary. These book titles are music to my ears. As a total non-techie I need to read the ones by J.S. Matthews since I have a long way to go on the Affiliate Ad programs. I am clueless. What a great tip. How about writing a new one on "How Not To Be a Dummie, for Dummies"? I'd read it.

We're all 'dummies' in some areas Peg. With the wonderful stories you write, I don't think your writing is at issue!

Although I've only read a few Dummies books, they have been helpful and well written. Usually I borrow them from the library, as I can't afford to buy every book on things I'm interested in!

Snakesmum I've always found them helpful, especially when I was working in technology because things change so fast in that field.
