Everything You Wanted to Know About Freelancing but Were Afraid To Ask

Have you thought about freelancing? Have you heard the life of a freelancer is not all the pretty as you thought? Here are some things about freelancing that you may have been afraid to ask.

1. Quantity over Quality is that for real?- In stepping back into the world of freelancing I have notice in kind that most require you to write insane about of articles a day like I saw one employer post they want 5 or 10 articles a day! HOW!!!! I guess I am not that up to par in my writing skills for is that normal? I see people saying oh yes I can do that. Then I saw one person post that they can only do 2 or 3 a day for if you want good content it’s highly impossible to do 5 or 10 articles a day. I was like AMEN! HE IS A TRUE WRITER! I am sorry but for me 3 is my limit I usually write 2 or 3 a day then I let them simmer overnight and tackle them again the next day add to it polish it to perfection or a perfect as it can get from me. Every article I write is so important to me and that I present the best from myself. Plus I am a mom so it may take 10 hours just to write one sentence some days!

2. Can you Trust? - This is the next question you may be afraid to ask can you trust this possible employer over the internet? Sadly I am a bit of a paranoid is trusting people will pay me and watch I get screwed over, but I’m never going to get anywhere if I just sit here and do nothing. I wonder also what is the tactful way to say when are going to pay me and not offend…hmm.

3. If your employer uses slang when chatting should you run?- Some of the employers may want to chat via messenger to get to know you better and find out more about you and if you are the right fit. Yet if your employer says tc for take care then should you be scared?

4. What if I’m shy with a bit of low self worth? - If you have esteem issues or are shy this can become a major factor as every job you see you think oh I can’t do that and just throw your hands, even though you may be able to. So belief in you is important.

Confession of a Freelancer

It has been a long time since I have freelanced. I have wanted to go back into freelancing... But…there was always but, an excuse of I’m not good enough. I have written for me mostly not anyone else and I have written on what I know and have experienced to build up my writing skills. Most of all I got to share and inform open up eyes. So this is a bit hard writing for someone else and following their rules, and writing what they want on topic I neither know or care about. Yet I do learn something new in my research so that is always a good thing. Plus that is true writing, true freelancing so I should not complain, but it you have only written for yourself on things you love it can be a bit strange and hard at first. I still try and work my passion and quirkiness to the articles I write for others, so far I have not gotten scolded either. Yes after many years of hiatus from freelancing I have seriously decided to get back into it. I was not serious before and only put half myself into it. I got my first gig and hope they are not looking for free work (Grumbles) oh! Sorry for the pessimism, that just me!

Churning out drivel at the rate of 10-15 articles a day is not writing. A computer can do it -- as a matter of fact a computer does do it -- article generators. If that's what you want to do, then by all means go to it. No shame in making an honest dollar.

But it's not the same thing as writing from the heart, is it?

Hello Wolfpack thanks you and I so feel you on that but I am never going to think I am good enough so I just jump and hope I float!

Eloquently put Lynda, but...do they have computers that really dish out articles and not people? Or are the people like computers dishing out drivel? No offense to the computer but some articles I read are so robotic so I now I wonder. Hahaha. Sorry brain dead day if I sounded ditzy.

I have thought about freelancing but I agree they want to much. I spend a lot of time writing some articles because I do a lot of research first and can only do 1 a day if I want to have any other life where I'm not connected to the computer. I can write more but quality over quantity as you stated in the standard I strive for, Great hub.

Freelancing is hard and sometimes distasteful work. I am not fast enough to write a lot of articles every day, either. I also don't have the focus I used to have, which doesn't help. There are lots of examples of unscrupulous employers out there, and it is tough to be prepared for anything in this day and age. Before everything went global, freelancers could create a standard contract that gave them some protection. Now there are so many writers out there looking for any gig at all, it is much harder to request any type of conditions that protect the writer.

PayPal can help create a valid means of paying authors for their work, but their are still no guarantees that writers will be treated well.

Well, Janny, thanks for addressing this--I know a lot of folks are thinking about freelancing these days. Take care and thanks again.

Freelancing well it is OK for some people but do you really get paid for all your hard work... not likely but someone certainly gets paid for it... I wonder whom. As always a great hub and it has been bookmarked as a reference should I ever be tempted.

My dearest Janny...

I find so hard to write like crazy just to make a buck, that I´d rather not! But then again, that´s me! Sometimes need stomps on ideology and passion...If it pays the bills, well...who knows! But I write to help, to share, to transmit ideas or themes I consider useful...Thanks for sharing! Very good hub! Rated up, Bookmarked and Stumbled!

Warmest regards and infinite eternal blessings,

Al

I know what you mean Al I wonder the same thing. I also wonder can you really write a good article if you are pumping out articles 10 articles a day? Can they really be good? Probably no, and most probably don't care either its all about the numbers. Thank you so much my friend.

Rebecca E. profile image

Rebecca E. 6 years ago from Canada

JAnny-- here is teh quick answer, you can't pump out article after article without losing something, which is why I love drafts! Yes I do know people who do 10 articles a day, BUT BUT!!! they've also had several them in draft form over teh days before, so that really they are editing most of them. I think they write say a "big" aricle and break it down for a series. Any other way is NOT a good way to go, unless you are like lyndia and use an article generator.

JannyC profile image

JannyC 6 years ago Author

Thank you Rebecca. Ahh I see now the secret of 10 articles in a day. very tricky. I have actually stateed now I take my writing seriously and I normally can do 2 to 3 articles in a day. No more no less for Im about putting my best out there of myself. So far it has not hurt me either. Gonna write a hub about soon.

Fair warning! Thanks for the realistic take on this issue. I have thought about getting into the writing frenzy but have preferred to stgay here on HubPages because I can't just write blurb to order - have to be moved to write and then I want to write something of value. And it takes me time - I certainly can't commit to writing 5 or 10 articles a day. That way lies madness!

Thanks for sharing your thoughts

Love and peace

Thank you Tony. I know I can not do that either especially if they want it well written. And I take my writing seriously so I want to produce the best I can. Thanks for your comment.

Hi, again, i just thought I'd tell you that I just started on the redbud site, where you get paid for reading articles. Don't know what it's like yet, but I'm giving it a go! Nell

Horray Nell! I hope it goes well for you. Sometimes we got to take risk if we want something to happen. I got into this freelancing biz but then I some how owed money and Im like how this happen for I won the bid on the job but then I never heard about the job and ended up having to pay 5.00. luckily I did find two honest legit people on there that I am currently working for now.

Great points. hope you get this as been over a year on this thread. difficult to read at times, but hey, so what. Grammar is an issue there but I still make grammatical errors and English is my first language - DOH! What I suggest is get yourself a proof reader, textbroker do it cheaply, and you WILL get work there too. On finding work, great hubs here on lots of sites where you will find all the writing jobs. I would rather read your articles which highlight useful and poignant points affecting freelancers every day than a lot of the total dribble I see rubbishly copy and pasted onto hubs. Some hubs I just cant believe - 1 capsule, some are just eshops, no wonder hubpages wont allow code embedding. I like the points you raised. Its hard at first to trust people to pay you on time, or at all. Hows your job hunting and freelance work going now? heres my advice, use bidding sites like guru and elance as they have escrow arrangements. If you find a job through an ad from craigslist or gumtree as examples, ensure that they sign a Writer Agreement. Google that term as lots of templates exist and then insist on either a) payment upfront or b) 50% up front, remainder on delivery. Hope this helps. keep at it!

Thanks ClickforSeo! Business is going a lot better since I wrote this article by far! I have grown a lot too as a writer since this article as well. I even have my own little online writing business that is growing and growing. Thank you so much for taking time to read and comment! I'm very grateful!
