Famous Haunted Places--The Monte Cristo Mansion in Australia

Original owner, C.W. Crawley died in the house in 1910. His wife, E. L. Crawley died in the house in 1933. Mrs. Crawley has never left the house, and has been seen by many walking the halls and in the chapel on several occasions. She appears as a woman dressed in black. While she was alive, Mrs. Crawley often wore black lace dresses with high Victorian collars. This is probably why she is often seen as a black figure after her death.

The Monte Cristo home is located in Junee, New South Wales. It is now open to the public as a museum by the present owners, Reginald and Olive Ryan. They have had several unexplained experiences while living in the home. One of these experiences took place only three days after they moved in. They had left the house while it was still daylight, so had not turned on any lights before they left to run some errands. When they returned they saw all the lights in the house lit up. Reginald stopped the car in shock. As they watched after several minutes all the lights in the home shut off at the same time. Mrs. Ryan was shook up by the incident and didn't want to go back in the house, but did and has learned to live with her uninvited house guests.

In its heyday the estate was the jewel of the area. It is positioned on the top of a hill, which overlooks the town. Outwardly deeply religious and generous people, former employees told a far different story of how they had been treated by the Crawleys, especially Mrs. Crawley after Charles died.

The Crawleys were not the only people who have perished in the home. A stable hand burnt to death here, as well. There have also been reports of a mentally ill man being chained up in the home for over 40 years. A baby was dropped on the staircase, and died of her injuries. Since then, many people who descend the staircase feel an unseen pressure pushing them. Phantom footsteps are often heard walking across the second floor veranda. Ghost images have been seen walking throughout the courtyard late at night. The mirrors in the home reveal spirits walking by on many occasions.

To watch a video on YouTube of three ghost images taken at the house, go to: http://youtu.be/4cPbIb5fXSE. It’s very interesting and some of the most remarkable spirit footage I have seen.

Thanks, Lizzy and Truth... I appreciate you taking the time to comment. Lizzy, how does one get to a "Level 7 Commenter?" I'm not sure what it means, but it sure is impressive! :o)

Great hub and a fabulous spooky house!

It actually looks very pretty and benign sitting there, but that's usually the kind of building that gives out a false sense of security. I hate to imagine the negative energy left over in such a house, even if it is lovely, especially with the cruelty that seems to have gone on.

Fascinating hub + voted up awesome!

Hub Pages insisted that I remove the direct quote from the present owners of the Monte Cristo Home. Sorry. I have sub-phrased their narrative.

Hi, Christine--

I've no idea "how" you get up these 'commenter levels.' It's something new HP is doing...I don't understand it myself.

But, having to remove a quote???? Seriously?? A properly credited quote is now not allowed??? What gives?? I can see if it was not credited, or what have you, but surely, a direct quote lends credence to the article. Wow!

That's what I thought. They said that too much of the article was the direct quote. But that was a backpeddle, I'm sure. Frustrating.
