Fear of Flying or Aerophobia

Fear of Flying

Fish gotta swim,

And birds gotta fly.

Not me.

I mean, not I.

Let others fly.

Here, there and all around.

I want to feel the earth under me

And my little feet on the ground.

Flying is not natural

Way up in the air.

I prefer walking

E v e r y w h e r e.

If I trip over my feet while strolling

I just pick myself up bye and bye.

But if something happens while flying,

Oh my God, I could just die!

So I plan

To stay on land.

Let others fly,

Way up in the sky.

See that butterfly

Up so high

Flitting from rose to rose.

I promise thee

You will never get me

Up in one of those!

Signed . . . Cathy Caterpillar

P. S. If I have to hitch a ride

To travel through mist and fog,

I’ll do what my friend the flea does,

I’ll hop on and just take a dog.

Drbj - I hate flying! I dread it for days prior to a trip but it's only once or twice a year I have to. I once was on a very small plane from Miami to the Bahamas - I got so scared when they said that they needed a few heavier people to move to the front of the plane to balance out the weight! OMG - I wanted to scream - are you serious?? They were! That was a wild white knuckle ride:-/. Thank goodness for benzodiazepines:-) lol

I loved the poem it was so good - your rhyme is easily understood - I'd write more but then you'll see that my English ain't so good:) lol

Dear Cathy the... er Dear drbj, I thought I spotted you in the early morning rain, yes I agree, best to stay here on the ground, on your own what two, three dozen little feet, if God had meant you to fly he would have give you wings! Regards, snakeslane

I loved this and the unexpected twist.

I on the otherhand love to fly simply because I know there will be excitement when I reach my destination.

The best cure for fear of flying is to go up with an instructor, and take the controls.

I love it, and got my license many years ago.

Oh, I so hate the thought of flying myself! In fact, believe it or not, I haven't flown thus far. I've stayed with my feet firmly on the ground - not too sure, if I can manage to do that all my life!

When I saw the title of the hub, I was expecting one of your comprehensive hubs on the subject, but the poetry was a pleasant surprise. Loved this hub - thanks for sharing :)

A charming way to write about the fear of flying drbj. Ever notice how people stop chatting when the big jets start to taxi for take-off and only resume when the plane is at cruising height. Well, most anyway. OK, scary plane story: once in Europe on an older French propeller passenger plane the very young Swedish pilots decided to have some fun with the nervous Americans by doing some diving and wing dipping; if their goal was to make us even more jittery then it worked!

Hi Cathy, when there is a big bad blackbird about to bite your ass, you will be glad to fly.

Greetings from MAKUSR. You write you have fear of flying but your hub soars. I won't teach you how to overcome it. We all have fears. If you can, Fly. If you can't, Walk. Thanks for sharing.

I love your poetry doc but sorry to hear about your phobia. Not you! Too bad the trains here don't get you from A to B very well or with any comfort.

I was not expecting that to be written by Cathy Caterpillar and when I got to that point, I nearly fell off the telephone wire! Loved this ;-)

Hi, Kelly, I do feel your pain regarding flying. Fortunately for me, I do not have that fear ... yet ... since I have put on thousands of air miles in my life. But there have been some white knuckle moments.

That trip from the Bahamas to Miami had to be one of those moments for you. Pore baby. The only antidote for such a wild ride is to be knocked out with a powerful drug - administered by a physician.

Thank you for loving my poem so well . . . and don't apologize, your English is swell!

Hi, snakeslane, Cathy says she thought that was you the other morning in the rain. She didn't stop to say Hello because she was hurrying to get 8 pair of tiny galoshes for her little feet.

She thanks you for the reassurance that if God had meant her to fly, he would have given her wings. That was very comforting.

I thank you, too, for stopping by.

Just the thought of being up there in an airbus makes my stomach turn, and down there, cramped into a submarine, brings my heart to a stand still. And yet I have flied - once all the way to Holland. Desire to be at a specific place is stronger than fear. That's why we also drive our cars - a similar casket right on the ground. Now figure jumping out of a plane, relying on a parachute...

I guess humans are crazy.

drbj, this was a pleasant read. Voted up and highly entertaining :)))

Hi, Rosemary, thank you m'dear for loving this and the unexpected twist.

Unlike Cathy, I do not mind flying when it is the fastest way to get to my destination. Delighted to learn that you have excitement when you reach yours.

Have a question for you, m'luv - where are you flying to?

drbj profile image

drbj 4 years ago from south Florida Author

Good for you, Will, do you still take over the controls in an airplane every once in awhile? A private plane, that is.

I was a C.A.P.C.(Civil Air Patrol Cadet) once a very long time ago but after flying in a single engine propeller aiplane that creaked and wheezed and coughed, I decided a pilot's life was not for me.

drbj profile image

Hi, shil - I can understand your fear of flying. Aerophobia is not uncommon. A very good friend of mine also fears flying so he takes a tranquilizer before a flight. Seems to work for him.

Thank you for loving this hub and happy you were not disappointed that it was not a scientific treatise on flying fear. No thanks are necessary - it was my pleasure. Cathy says thanks, too.

Terra firma,

Makes me squirm-ah,

Wish that I could fly,

And if I had the wings to flap,

I'd fly up to the sky,

And on the ground,

That mangy hound,

And passenger I'd spy,

And if I had a poop to plop,

I'd plop it in his eye.

Hi again drbj to answer your question "Have a question for you, m'luv - where are you flying to?"

I have been extremely lucky and grateful to have been able to travel quite extensively. I have seen so many awesome, beautiful places and wildlife in its natural habitat. I have been sooo lucky to visit much of this beautiful world of ours. And of course my trips back to the UK to see my family are always exciting. Thank you for asking

drbj profile image

drbj 4 years ago from south Florida Author

Hi, Alastar. Yes, I have noticed how quiet the passengers get when the big jets start to take off. You know why we're so quiet, don't you? We're praying. You can observe the same procedure when landing. We are not only praying but clutching the armrests.

That was a scary flight you took on the prop plane. I don't mind missing that flight.

Thanks for finding this story charming. So are your comments.

Hey drbj, my earlier comment was written too early in the morning, referring to a song by Canadian singer songwriter Gordon Lightfoot called "Early Morning Rain" all about being stuck on the ground watching while the jet plane takes off overhead...I'd post a link, but would not want to er hijack your hub comments...

Greetings backatcha, Manoj. What a lovely comment: my 'hub soars.' Thank you for the very practical advice. I will share it with Cathy. I know she, too, will soar one day. She just doesn't know it.

drbj profile image

Hello, Ruby dear, you are a very brave woman to fly even though terrified. I know some folks who fly 'bombed' but I don't advocate it. However, besotted may be better than drugged.

Thank you for loving my butterfly poem. If the muse returns I will write more. Then again, no muse may be good muse. Who knows, eh?

Thank you for the condolences, Hilary, and for loving my poetry but this time I was portraying the lovable lil caterpillar, Cathy. I know she will grow out of her fear when she gets to pupa-berty. Is that a stretch or what?!

Cathy sends condolences to you, too, concerning your undependable train system. Ah, well, nobody is perfekt ... purfect ... perrfect .... always correct.

drbj profile image

Cathy and I hope you are okay, Alexandra, and apologize for any distress this poem may have caused you. But we both did laugh hysterically at your comment. And we love you for 'loving this.' :o)

drbj profile image

I admire your courage, Martie, flying all the way from SA to Holland when it was so fearful for you. And I assume, a return flight as well. But as you so wisely pointed out, our desire to be at our destination can overcome our fear of the journey.

I'm not too fond of your description of our cars - 'a similar casket on the ground' - but it is appropos if you are describing expressway traffic in Florida where those who drive 70 mph are in the slow lane! We have more than our share of those 'crazy humans.'

Thank you for finding this a pleasant read, 'highly entertaining' and the up vote. Cathy thanks you, too.

Hi, b.M, I used to enjoy flying (in a plane that is) much more when we didn't have all the security fuss and baggage regulations and extra charges we have today. I understand the necessity for most of them but it does make flying a pain in the butt.

Thank you for finding this to be a Fun Poem. It was fun for me to write it.

drbj profile image

drbj 4 years ago from south Florida Author

I'm delighted, amillar, that this small poetic effort of mine evoked such a poetic response from you. And so creative: 'Terra firma, Makes me squirm-ah"? Wow, that's difficult to surpass.

I won't even attempt a 'poop to plot' retort. You win the prize for descriptive phrasing, my man.

drbj profile image

drbj 4 years ago from south Florida Author

You are not alone, ron. I would venture that most of the people I meet on airplanes are only there for the convenience of travel in a shorter time frame. The only folks I meet who actually seem to enjoy the trip are the pilots. Even the flight attendants seem rather bored by the whole process.

Thanks for finding this 'cool'.

drbj profile image

Thank you, Paradise. 'Very cool' is what I'll settle for since I'm too old to be 'very hot.'

Hi, Dex, I don't exactly love flying but I do like to fly as a means of travel when time is of the essence. If my plane trip is to be more than 6 to 8 hours, I try to take the red eye so I can sleep when possible.

Maybe some day we will be able to fly without planes but until then airplane travel is still the fastest way to go.

May my humor continue to amaze you and thanks for the up and away (I got it!)

I had a young friend who was developmentally disabled. We were looking up at the sky as a jet flew over. I said that I would like to be in a plane, going on a trip. The young woman sighed and said, " not me. I wouldn't want to get so small."

It took me a minute, then I laughed my head off. She was a real pip and always full of great comments due to her unique perceptions.

drbj profile image

drbj 4 years ago from south Florida Author

What a great true story, Dolores, thank you for sharing it here. We are usually so busy going about our own business that we don't stop to think about the unique and clever ways that others with different perceptions may see the world. What a charming young woman!

I loved your humorous poem. Cute little twist and cute cartoon. Hope Cathy gets over her fear of flying before too long. I personally am not afraid to fly but with the security situation I am not. I do not care to be groped.

Thank you, Becky, for loving my humorous poem and the cartoon. Though she doesn't know it, Cathy will be fearlessly flying before long. I'm with you about not enjoying flying because of the security groping. Not that I'm against groping per se, of course. Just that I like to choose my own groping partner.
