First Love Revisited

I loved you then as I love you now

Three decades have since passed

Yet you have always lived in my heart

Secretly and quietly like an owl in flight

Cupid’s bow has flown into the night

And struck me in the full moon’s light

We share memories which only to us belong

We remember the times we heard our song

After all these years, we can taste the tears

Shed for the loss felt as we parted ways

Leaving behind those teenage loving days

Now in middle age we sit as friends and reminisce

About those carefree times our love felt so intense

Never again did we experience such loyalty and dedication

Nor did we feel the same degree of lovesick devastation

I loved you then as I love you now

We have but life's scars to share somehow

But our natures have remained, we are the same

We were 18 hoping for the world to change

We met, we gasped – our faces showed not our age

We remembered our history and never forgot our names

You became a leader and prospered in your adult life

I became an adventurer who often encountered strife

But here I am, an aged warrior who in the end did survive

And encountered you once again as souls always require

I loved you then my friend, as I love you now.

There exists for us no earthly space or time

I was your first love as you were mine

So we cannot be but forever tied

In heart, in spirit and in mind.

I can feel the love and the pain of separation through the verses. Well done. Nice topic!

@ dghbrh & @ Senoritaa - many thanks for dropping by. First love is the strongest felt but in turn, so is the intensity of pain which comes inevitably at the time of separation. It is a remarkable and surreal experience to encounter one's first love later in life - and to acknowledge that in some cases, love never truly ends and one's suffering in youth was not in vain.

This poem expresses love and loss, and the joy of finding it again... it is as fluid as a great poem should be, and yet it tells an incredible lovestory

If this is a personal song ... what a Lucky Fella he is scrittobene

and I love happy endings!!!

Voted up for it's monumental beauty and realism

@ Laurinzo - yes this poem is based on true events. After 34 years I went out on a dinner date with my first love. What a surreal night talking about old times and realising how similar we still are to who we were as teenagers. Our natures have not changed much I guess. We are merely older and wiser now and able to redefine our personal philosphy on life based on our life journey.

......Tom says it all - sounds like a love of yours, is he not?

Well I'd better clear this deck just in case VM shows up with his noble heart and his string of pearls and words and just add one more word to Sir Tom's discreet comment: "Very nice indeed."

Oh please correct me if I'm wrong but I was thinking of another 'Tom' - yes , Tom Dylan , the younger (and far prettier, but less talented brother) of Bob.

Whoops.

@ Gypsy -Oh yes it is romantic and touching and it's little things like this which adds a magic to life.

@ Tom - Thanks for dropping by and please excuse my eccentric colleague Epi for his fractured humour.

@ Epi - please lay off the cold medicine you're on - I think it's affecting your judgment. However, you can still churn out literary masterpieces and your rave reviews are always welcome here. Would I be right in saying that there are times after a swig of cough mixture that maybe you wished I was your first love? Hehehehehe - now that's some Aussie humour for you.. ;)

This is a very beautful poem of love and loss and memories of that love. Reading the comments confirms the truth of it, and I hope love is rekindled.
