First Love Revisited
I loved you then as I love you now
Three decades have since passed
Yet you have always lived in my heart
Secretly and quietly like an owl in flight
Cupid’s bow has flown into the night
And struck me in the full moon’s light
We share memories which only to us belong
We remember the times we heard our song
After all these years, we can taste the tears
Shed for the loss felt as we parted ways
Leaving behind those teenage loving days
Now in middle age we sit as friends and reminisce
About those carefree times our love felt so intense
Never again did we experience such loyalty and dedication
Nor did we feel the same degree of lovesick devastation
I loved you then as I love you now
We have but life's scars to share somehow
But our natures have remained, we are the same
We were 18 hoping for the world to change
We met, we gasped – our faces showed not our age
We remembered our history and never forgot our names
You became a leader and prospered in your adult life
I became an adventurer who often encountered strife
But here I am, an aged warrior who in the end did survive
And encountered you once again as souls always require
I loved you then my friend, as I love you now.
There exists for us no earthly space or time
I was your first love as you were mine
So we cannot be but forever tied
In heart, in spirit and in mind.
