Flatline - poem

It starts with one breath,

Ends the same way...

Your story starts out,

Then ends all in one day.

Your heart can only beat,

So many times.

Your mouth can only spit out,

So many rhymes.

The very life you were given,

Turns it's back on you,

Beats you down with everything possible,

Until there's nothing left to do.

Your given a time,

One of unknown quantity,

But what you didn't know,

Is that same holds true for the quality.

The sound of your breath,

The beat of your heart,

It makes you alive,

But keeps you dead from the start.

Heart beating slower,

Breath getting steeper,

Eyes getting wider,

Soul sinking deeper.

Gazing at the beeping monitor I lay

As these thought roll through my head,

Thinking that no one knows what it feels like...

No one knows what its like to be almost dead...

I'm 52 and it is shocking how quickly time has passed. I think back 30 or so years aboult college and I start to wonder if it even happened. You are so right that nobody knows how long they get and it must be an incredible moment to lay there and know there are no more chances.... I like this one...

Thank you both! It's aweful the way we take life for granted everyday, and though this particular experience for me was scary to say the least I believe at that point in my life that it was also very necessary. If only everyone could feel this just once in life and see how very delicate our lives our, maybe we all could be a little more proud of what we are...
