Follow Me

by John Hansen © 2014

She hangs her head,

A tear runs down her cheek.

She shivers as a cold gust of wind

Chills her bare shoulders.

The hard wooden slats of the park bench

Her only companion.

Why are teenage years tough,

And life shit?

"Hello!" says a friendly voice,

"May I sit?"

She nods nonchalantly.

"Why so sad a face

On such a pretty girl?"

He asks.

She tries to smile.

"Ah, much better,

Tell me your problems."

Source

His accent so charming,

He draws her in,

With compliments and lies.

The girl pours her heart out,

He pretends to care.

"Maybe I can help."

He is so charming,

"You should be a model,

Or an actress.

I have connections."

She smiles with hope.

"Follow me" he says,

And takes her hand,

Leading her away

From all her troubles,

Towards her dreams.

But those troubles

Will soon seem so small,

When her nightmare begins.

All too often, young runaway girls (and sometimes boys) end up under the thumb of a brutal pimp, or even raped and killed.

This poem should be posted where young people thinking about running away from home can read it.

I have written articles about sex trafficking before.....huge business...very little being done about it in the U.S.....this should be a concern for every parent and change should be demanded of the authorities...if it were their child there would be no limit to the effort to end this crime. Thank you for writing this, John.

great poem, jodah.

Totally agree Eric, but these things need to be written.

Jodah profile image

Thanks Bill, the trade just seems to be getting bigger and bigger. Something serious has to be done to try to reduce it. I read some disturbing stuff about how it is thriving in certain states in America, I didn't expect that. I thought it was mainly Asia and Europe.

Thanks so much dragonfly. Appreciate your comment.

This is so sad but also the reality. I was listening to the radio this morning while driving and they were talking about Inuit girls at risk of human trafficking in Canada. Girls as young as 12 years old who are lured out of their families! Very sad!

Thank you for writing about that subject because those girls need help to get out of that exploitation!

Thanks for reading Joelle, I am hearing about this trafficking in places I had no idea it was a problem. It seems to be even more widespread than I thought. I was not aware of the Inuit girls in Canada being exploited, that would have been the last place I would have expected. It is sad, I am trying to do my bit.

Thank you for reading Harishprasad, while there is so much demand for sex and so much money to be made from it this trafficking will never stop. All I can do is help spread the word and try to educate young girls to reduce the risk that they take. Your kind words are appreciated.

Good to bring this to our attention & remind us that:

- Vulnerable kids & youth are everywhere

- Western countries (such as ours) are just as at risk

- Raising awareness is vital

Thanks for this fantastic poem Jodah, will pass onto the poets in my life..

Voted up & awesome & shared & will tweet cause it's just so important!

Please remember that this is a problem because there is a market for it. Who makes up that market? Who purchases these young girls and children? Yes, we need to rescue these victims. We also need to put a stop to those who are in the market for them!

Genna East profile image

Oh, Jodah, these predators are practiced monsters that seem to know exactly what to say to these poor young girls. It makes me livid, yet feeling sadly powerless to do anything to help. Awareness is a step in the right direction, and your vivid poem accomplishes this with stark realism and unforgettable imagery. Pearlmacb’s encouragement of such poetry for Poetry4Freedom is an admirable project. Thank you! Voted way up and shared.

Jodah profile image

Jodah 2 years ago from Queensland Australia Author

You are exactly right Kathleen, we have to change the whole culture. I guess it is easier said than done, but we have to at least try to change people. Where there is a demand there will always be people cashing in from supplying that demand, so we have to keep pushing these issues to the forfront of the media to try to force change. thanks for reading.

Jodah profile image

Jodah 2 years ago from Queensland Australia Author

thank you Genna for you kind and insightful comments. Yes these men are expert flatterers and they know what works having done it so many times. There isn't anything I can do but help to raise awareness and I'm glad pearlmacb encouraged me to do that. Thanks also for sharing and voting up.

Will Star made a good point about posting this poem. I would suggest putting it in juvenile facilities--training schools, prisons, detention centers, counseling facilities, behavioral health centers, summer camps for troubled youth, job corp centers, school counselors' offices, and other places that cater to adolescents, teens, and young adults. It could keep countless faces off bulletin boards in post offices, grocery stores, and other places. "HAVE YOU SEEN ME" is all too familiar. Even worse, we hurt when we see the computer enhanced pictures, which give the message that the victims have been missing for a long time.

Historical mass slavery has been attacked and eventually anihilated, but not enough attention is given to this modern slavery epidemic, or is it pandemic? It is bad enough for adults to endure, but children held in slavery is unthinkable.

The slaveholders are not the only criminals in these acts. The criminals seldom mentioned are the buyers of human flesh. They are our neighbors, our co-workers, the ones we see in passing every day. They are the ones flying to business meetings, the ones on the construction jobs, the ones working at the hospitals and hundreds of other places. They mostly wear the masks of innocence. These are everyday people right around us---or could they be closer?

How kind of you to help create awareness to help save people from this inhumanity. I will share.

Jodah profile image

Jodah 2 years ago from Queensland Australia Author

Thank you Levertis, for you comment, suggestion and sharing. The poem has been posted on Twitter and Facebook and will be published in a book by Poetry4Freedom from which all proceeds will go to help the victims of sex trafficking. Yes it would be good to have it displayed in all those places you suggest as well. You are right, the real perpetrators are the ones who demand and pay for these services, not the suppliers, they are just middlemen but still guilty of a terrible injustice. I'm just trying to do my small bit.

Wow, how profound is your poem! I missed this one, but so glad I found it. I heard about a true story on Faith Radio of a young girl, who this happened to, and thank goodness, her brother had been to some sort of class or something where he learned the signs of possible sex trafficking. It saved his sister's life. She is very intelligent and 18 and in college and was wanting to get out from under her parents and live on her own, and this guy stalked her unknown to her via Facebook and got to know her, what she likes, where she goes and such, and found out so much about her just by seeing what she posted on Facebook. He was intelligent and charming and had a lot of money and asked her to move in with him after taking her to his really nice home, then asked her to out state with him to see his family (where it was set up to trafick her). She up and moved out of her mother's house and moved in with him, and when her brother saw what was going on, he called the authorities and she was rescued, but she did have to go through some stuff!

This is an excellent project you have shared here and I will share with all of my poet friends too.

Up and more and sharing.

Have a great weekend,

Faith Reaper

I'm glad you found this one too Faith. I don't know why some hub of people you are following slip through without you getting notified, same happens to me. Thanks for sharing that story, I'm glad her brothe was aware and saved her. Not all have a good ending like that. I appreciate your kind comments and thank you for sharing this one around. Jodah, excellent work!! It is scandalous, that this atrocious crime is allowed to prosper in societies all over the world. The people who perpetrates such crimes are no less than parasites. Great poem, good job of spreading awareness in you own special way.

Jodah profile image

Jodah 2 years ago from Queensland Australia Author

Yes Jo it is shocking that this practice of trafficking is so widespread. Thank you for your generous comments.

tillsontitan profile image

Late, but here. this was a very touching poem about one of the horrors in our society. I agree with Kathleen of course, and agree awareness will help make this horrible crime harder to perpetrate.

It is so hard to tell young runaways or unhappy girls of the dangers they face on their own. We need places for them to go where they can feel safe and not put down or abused.

There is so much to this horrible trafficking and you have done a great job of saying so much in such a short poem. The Poetry4Freedome is more than a worthy cause and I hope to spread the word.

Voted all but funny Jodah. Wonderful job!

I came across her the same way. I wrote a poem in a Hub named "Six Live (A lyric poem in support of Poetry4Freedom)". I love the support that you are giving for these poor victims, and I only wish that we can help bring them back home! One death is one too many, one captured victim is going too far one too many!

Beautiful poem Jodah, keep up the wonderful words my friend. Many blessings to ya, forever.

Thank you for your kind words and support legendary graduate. The more of us that can contribute in some small way by raising awareness the better. It may not bring anyone home but it may put pressure on those with authority to try and do more to curb this horrendous trade. Blessings to you too.
