Will you teach me this ?............verse

Who will teach me how to hate
or of the honor in war
Is it then you who will teach me how to
hide from what it is that hurts
who will teach me how to imagine
I can love without a cost
what about how to raise a child
that ends up feeling lost

will you teach me this

Who will show me how to not honor
a woman
though a woman brought me into this life
or to stop loving a child
even though I was one once
or to turn my head away at the
hungry stranger

will you teach me this

Who will show me that all that I am
is what I want in life
and not what I can give
or of how it is that I might take a life
and still hold dearly my own

Will you teach me this

How to walk right by and not reach down to
help a friend
to ignore the reaching hand of the elderly
and look away until the end
to watch a grown man scream at a woman
and pretend I cannot hear

will you teach me this

Simply beautiful and near to my heart. Ed I often contemplate how much nicer the world would be if we all acted as though a child were watching us and learning from us.

WOW. If this could be expressed any better or more clearly, I do not know how, dear Ed. Thank you for it.

Eric's comment should remind us that there always ARE children observing what we do, for better or worse. Perhaps some explanations for too many youngsters gone astray could be traced to what they observed and were taught by example.

Makes me wonder what I'm teaching, because people are learning all the time. Your poem is a wake up call to be cautious and intentional. Thank you.

This flinging of digital ink has transported me back to 1950s Newport, Rhode Island in the days before Dylan got ruined by electricity and we were all young and had ideals and loved Mary Travers and believed in God and Senator Dodd and keeping ol' Castro down. Though I stole the last line from the late Phil Ochs, the sentiment is mine and this is one damn fine piece of work. Ten thumbs up . Ten; for I am all thumbs.
