Forgetting Her Never

So very long ago

he’d given her his heart

she’d taken it

and never given it back

But life is no fairy tale

even lovers get weary

when he noticed that he couldn’t please

he tried all the harder

Oh, she’d smile

and the kisses were sweet

but there seemed to be

a far away look in her eyes

He composed songs for her

his piano tinkling merrily

but as he sang of his love for her

she seemed to be dreaming

It came as no surprise

there was nothing to disguise

as much as he was devoted to her

her love was not the same

To her it seemed

a most pleasurable game to play

keeping him on a hook

with just one sultry look

When she went away

there seemed nothing more to say

but his heart would belong to her

from now and forever

As the years rolled by

he tried a love here and there

but as lovely as the ladies were

he had no heart to give

Many nights he spent

watching a symphony play

among the stars so bright up above

wondering about his true love

Now as silver strands

showed up among the gray

he began to ponder

if perhaps he should find her once more

Just perhaps she was ready

to settle with him

together to spend

their sunset years

When he finally found her

she was still as lovely as before

a woman now full of grace

sadder but so much wiser

Her smile radiated like the sun

when he reminded her of the fun

and when he asked her if she still had his heart

she said it was her greatest treasure

So it came to be

that love never really dies

not if it’s true

not if it’s meant to be

Finding their way back to love

was the simplest thing

he gave her a memorable ring

and her heart began to sing

Now their days were filled with joy

their nights full of bliss

dreaming by starlight

with each loving kiss

Rasma, this is beautiful. Sometimes we don't know what we have until it's gone. Fortunately, it wasn't too late for these lovers.

I love this poem. It has character, commitment and true love that overlay a hint of sadness that may never quite disappear. Not all lost loves can be regained, but when it happens, it is a beautiful thing.
