Free Online Short Stories For Kids: Ollie The Big Red Bus

This is the first in a series about Ollie. He is a big red bus who loves nothing more but to please his passengers on his journeys.

'Ollie was a happy bus; every day he did what he liked doing best, taking people to wherever they wanted to go. Every day he called at the bus-stops around the town, always at the same time, never ever late.'

In this adventure, Ollie experiences competition from the yellow bus and it is this vehicle that really shakes up everyone at the bus station:

'Ollie stood in the big garage with all the other red buses, he asked them if they had seen the new little yellow bus.

"Yes i have!" said Basil, as he stood beside his old trusted friend. "It kept getting in front of me and taking all my passengers, it really shouldn't be allowed."

"I agree, it's not fair," said Leonard the express bus, standing in the corner.

"And me" cried a voice from the back of the garage, and all the other buses chorused their agreement. Big tears dropped from Ollie's two big front head-lamps, splashing on to the cold concrete floor.'

Free Online Short Stories For Kids: Ollie The Big Red Bus - Ollie's New Route

Our happy-go-lucky red bus has found himself at the train station.  Here Ollie meets a rather boastful high speed train named Charles.

'"Hello," said Ollie, to a long train that stood near him, "what's your name?" "Charles," said the train, it's round bumpers wrinkling up at Ollie.  "I'm a fast train with lots of first class carriages, and travel all the way to London every day." "Oh!" said Ollie, "well I'm a big red bus and take the townspeople to work and school every day." "Is that all," said Charles as he stuck his nose in the air, and jiggled his coaches in a very haughty manner.'

Charles looks down on Ollie because he is fast and slick.  How does our friendly red bus deal with the situation?  What trouble does Ollie get into?  Will learning his new route teach him a lesson of his own?  Well, this is for you to decide!

Free Online Short Stories For Kids: Ollie The Big Red Bus - Ollie's Flight Of Fancy

For this free online story for kids, we have Ollie wishing to fly. He had never seen anything like it, as a small plane lands at the local airport, our big red bus longs to take off and reach the skys - just like his new friend:

'Ollie asked the little plane what his name was, and he replied, 'Archie'. "Oh tell me what it is like to fly?" asked Ollie eagerly. Archie smiled, and told him how he skips between the fluffy white clouds, and soured over the countryside, seeing all the animals in the fields, looking oh so tiny far below.'

But double decker buses can't fly, or can they?

Free Online Short Stories For Kids: Ollie The Big Red Bus - Ollie Falls In Love

Even love has its lessons. Here Ollie is blown away by a rather attractive new edition to the bus garage. Cassie, a new beautiful pink coach, is fit and, boy, does she know it!

'As Ollie travelled around the town, he had to pass where Cassie was being shown off. She stood in the middle of the square, looking proud and arrogant.'

Ollie, like many of the buses at the garage, wants her undivided attention. Did he get it? Well, you know love can have its misgivings can't it?!

Free Online Short Stories For Kids: Ollie The Big Red Bus - Ollie's New Job

This is the last in the series of Ollie's free online short stories and as he enters his twighlight years, he is filled with unknowing as to what the future holds for him.  Hand in hand with Bertie, they are taken to an unknown place in the cold and wet.  They are scared and lonely.

'The rain turned into a miserable drizzle which seeped into every corner of the friend's red coach-work. "Oh dear," said Ollie, "what is to become of us?" "I don't know," said Bertie, "but it seems the bus company doesn't want us anymore." All night they huddled together, cold, wet and miserable.'

But don't dispear, these story pages have a twist which will fill you with hope - a great online read!

I think it's great that you highlight the availability of free online stories for kids. In my estimation, that's where we should be going. It's immediate, it's free and there's great availibility - just the thing that kids love and parents too, who can save on the cost on new stories and library trips.

Going to the bookstore is good and the library too, as a social outing, though the costs of books can be very prohibitive, if there are good readers in the family.

Bt you can't beat freebies, can you?

I write children's stories and welcome the eBook way of doing things and saving paper and printing costs. The kids and the parents, I think, need a little coaxing, but I've no doubt, this will be the way of the future, especially with FREE stories, as covered by you in your hub.

Thank you chspublish. I think e-books are a great way to get the work out there. It is great how the Internet has allowed freedom from the 'glass ceiling' effect. Instead of 'not what you know, but who', real talent can shine through with the people vote. How wonderful is that? Let the love shine through and the cream rise!
