Georgia's Flowers

Georgia O’Keeffe has long been one of my favorite artists. When I look at her flower series, many things stir within. This poem expresses a few of those impressions and is written in Haiku style.

Fluid dancers stir

The scent upon the palette…

Tender silence sings;

Colors sift and meld,

Folding silken shape to curve…

Beauty’s soft abyss;

Bursting florals still

In momentary fragments...

Tendrils sieze the light.

"Colors and line and shape seem for me a more definite statement than words."

--- Georgia O’Keeffe

Beautiful poem Genna. This is two beautiful pieces. I never heard of her before, but her work is amazing. You always have a way of writing poetry about anything, great work as always. Voted up, awesome, beautiful, and shared.

Perhaps Georgia might change her statement after reading your words. The words, for me, offer a more definite statement, but then, would not every poet?

I love the line "fluid dancers stir." Her art is amazing, and you captured it perfectly. Very nicely done my friend; you said so much with so little, but then, those who do haikus well, like you, have that ability.

Oh, this is very beautiful! Your poetry is captivating. Georgia O'Keefe is brilliant and I especially like these two pieces of her art. Voted up, awesome, beautiful and sharing!

Beautifully done!

Honestly, on seeing your theme, I wondered who could do it justice. After all, her work is just stunningly exquisite. This work on her art is, too.

Wonderfully done! "folding silken shape to curve, beauty's soft abyss" so captures the sensuous nature, texture and shape of a flower.

@ThelyricWriter

Hi there. O’Keeffe was an amazing artist. Using colors, shading and slender lines were techniques she mastered with amazing creativity and precision. I chose two paintings in her flower series that weren’t subject to Freudian interpretations by critics. I also loved her paintings of New Mexico. Thanks so much for your visit, and words of encouragement and votes. Have a great day! :-)

@whounowho

Good morning. I’m pleased you liked this poem; thank you. I think Georgia deserves the credit for my amateurish attempt at describing what I see when I look at much of her flowers series. Good to see you! :-)

@Arb

Hi Alan. I agree with you about how poets can capture the beauty of her work. As I mentioned to Lyricwriter the combination of her use of color, shading and line contours was mesmerizing, in addition to her interpretation of what she saw and perceived through nature. Thanks so much for the visit Alan, and for your kind words. :-)

@Billybuc

Thanks so much. I’m still struggling with Haiku and am a novice; it has its limitations, but I picked it, intentionally, to describe two of her paintings. You picked one of two of my favorite lines. :-) Cheers and best wishes, Billy.

@VocalCoach

I so agree about O’Keeffe’s brilliance. When I first saw her work, I was flabbergasted. Her style, so inimitable and her techniques, simply amazing. A few have tried to copy her but have been unable to do so. It was what she saw and felt, as well as her interpretations that were Georgia’s own. ‘Blue & Green Music’ is one of my favorites. Thank you for those thoughtful words and votes!

@RTallioni

‘Stunningly exquisite’ describes O’Keeffe so well. I don’t know how she created her colors, but she was a master at this art. I only hope I was able to capture a few of several expressions of what she makes me think and feel when I see her art. Thank you!

@Xstatic

You picked one of two of my favorite lines in describing brush strokes to capture the nature and beauty the beauty of the flower. Nature gives us so much, and O’Keeffe was able to capture much of what we sometimes see and feel about these wonderful gifts. At times, it was if she held a magnifying glass in one hand and a brush in another. Thank you for the visit and kind words.

Genna, this poem is so breathy, I feel like reading it so sensually, you know with that breathy tone we get when we feel so...... exhilarated!

Gorgeous! Your words compliment the art. I liked description of the flower, the music and colors and the last phrasing because I felt the fragility and short-lived beauty the of ‘bursting’ flower. Beautiful my friend.

Hi there. I have two books on her artwork but was unable to scan the photographs. These two pictures are a couple of my favorites in her flower series…especially, the ‘Blue & Green Music’ I was lucky to find on the internet. Thanks you for those very nice comments…if I could express only a small part of how her art inspires, I felt I was lucky. Good to see you. :-)

A fascinating painter who produced powerful images. I admire your attempt to put words to the flowers and feel that the creative process works. As someone who writes poetry I was loathe to put words to images for years but since reading two books

'Transforming Vision: Writers on Art' and

'With a Poet's Eye'

have changed my view! I love the combination of words and images.

Genna, I can get lost in the beauty of O'Keefe's work, compelled to return again and again when her paintings are on exhibit. It's hard to put into words those feelings that the images evoke, yet you have done that well. . .

"Colors sift and meld

Folding silken shape to curve

Beauty's soft abyss"

What a gift! Thank you.

My best,

Cat:)
