Go Away - A Poem About Internet Addiction

Go Away (I'm addicted to the internet!)

My husband comes in to tell me about his morning fishing expedition. In my mind, I'm screaming, "Be quiet, go away!"

But I smile politely and close the lid to my laptop so that it seems my attention is on him. All the while, I'm thinking, "I wonder if I have a good photograph to go with my hub? I wonder if I can put together another photo gallery hub before the contest ends?— Now go away!"

Gemini would like to write a Hub

I Love My Cat, but ...Go Away!

The cat, my beloved Gemini of the famous Psychic Cat hub,and the one who wrote the well known hub, 10 Ways to Pamper Your Cat, comes to me and jumps into my lap only to find that there’s already an occupant – my laptop computer – just where he likes to take his nap. He tries so hard to find a spot on my keyboard, only to be rudely removed. Oh, what am I coming to? Poor kitty— Now go away!

I'm Checking the Internet - Go Away!

I open my laptop shortly after I open my eyes. I find myself trying to hide my internet addiction from my family as I sneak looks at my stats and comments and followers’ hubs when hubby is in the bathroom or goes out to get the mail. I bake cookies for the grandchildren, and have my computer on the counter so that I can check it between batches of cookies. The oven timer goes off. Go Away!

Late at night is the best time, for the TV is off and my husband goes to bed. The cat finally decides to curl up next to me instead of on my keyboard. I can edit my photos and work on my next masterpiece in the quiet. I see from the comments that pop up in my email and from the new hubs that are published in the middle of the night that I am not alone. In the wee hours before dawn, I find myself dozing over my computer. Sleep, go away!

Addicted to the Internet - And It Doesn't Go Away!

That is the life of an addict, a HubPages addict, an internet addict. We get twitchy with separation anxiety when we are away from our computers. If we own one of those delightful devices that can browse the internet wherever we are, we will sneak peeks while we're driving or shopping or eating lunch with a friend or lying on the beach. It’s a sickness! And it doesn’t go away!

So this is the inspiration for my poem. Like it or not, you may identify with it!
~~~~~~
Stephanie
Go Away, Let Me Write
Too busy to cook,
I don’t have the time.
Won’t you fix lunch
Sweet hubby of mine?
I seldom clean house,
Or vacuum the floor.
I don’t have time,
For that little chore.
The laundry stack grows,
Not folded or pressed.
Impossible now,
To get nicely dressed.
I wear my old sweats,
From morning to night.
I really don't care,
If I look a fright.
The manicure’s gone,
My hair, what a wreck!
I’ve only got time to
Research and spell check.
Of course, I get paid!
See my earnings grow.
My clickers, they click,
My auctions, they flow.
Just Wednesday I made,
A buck twenty-nine.
That’s six bucks since April,
That I’ve made online.
I’ll win that contest!
Get comments galore!
I’ll meet the challenge,
To raise my Hub score.
Shut off the TV,
And please go away.
Leave me to create,
The hub of the day!
Stephanie, great poem! I don't consider myself an internet addict. But others can relate to this. Great hub too! Well done!
Hi, Stephanie. Your poem "Go Away, Let Me Write" caught my interest when I was given the task to present on a poem of my own selection in class. In fact, I'll be presenting tomorrow. Any tips (maybe you want me to share in class?)? haha
We cheer as we read the words written here
We surely relate, those from far and from near
Great intro and great poem Stephanie, you spoke for all of us!
Voted up, funny, and interesting.
Documentor - What you say is probably true, but you've certainly put a serious spin on what was meant to be a lighthearted article! I really must curtail my fantasy life!
Thanks for your input.
documentor 4 years ago
I think it's a form of escapism. Internet addicts who spend all their time forming pseudo-relationships miss the whole real deal and are cheating themselves.
Internet has many positives, but addiction is addiction and it's almost always a way for unhappy people to put off doing the internal self-work that will make them happier.
I wish you luck with your internet addiction. There is something better out there. Your husband and any children deserve better, even pets and strangers, than an empty shell creating a fantasy life for herself on the computer.
Arthur - Well, at least we don't have to walk our cats in the middle of a dark, rainy night! :) My cat actually enjoys life in the RV and likes to watch the dogs walking by from his safe perch in the front window. Despite my article, I do tear myself away from my internet addiction to pay attention to my Gemini when he demands it. He's sure to let me know when enough is enough with the computer stuff!
Arthur 4 years ago
Hi Stephanie, about cats, they sure can interfere with an internet addiction!lol You gotta love them. I've found that RVing with a cat can be tricky sometimes when most folks at RV Parks have little ankle biting dawgs! Thanks for the poem, enjoyed it and sooo true!
Denise - I do sometimes feel guilty about spending so much time on the internet - poor hubby doesn't get much attention some days! Looks like we all get the same treatment at home. Sometimes it is hard to focus on the mundane daily tasks when you feel you have something more important to do on the net. What did we ever do with our time before cyberspace?
Great piece and so true.
Forgive me...I've been writing and working and not reading other hubs. So glad to focus on you this afternoon and 'catch up'.
This is a funny and very true situation. I've neglected my sleep when I'm on a writing roll. My nephew doesn't mind that I don't pay attention to him...he's a teen. But, poor Beauty our dog-well, she tries to jump on my lap and looks forlorn when I push her back down.
Ohhhh Steph - I'm only a few steps shy of "guilty" regarding this, but I can already identify with it.
Oceansnsunsets - I know I can totally understand it when the kids are immersed in their video games. It's so easy to become over-involved with the computer! It is great on HubPages to know that our cyber friends understand where we're coming from and are there to offer advice, support and great comments. Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts and for your support!
oceansnsunsets profile image
Oh Stephanie, you are an honest soul! I think we all have been there for sure, but other things have to pull me away, and my eyes also seem to appreciate a break from the computer.
Why does time fly by when on the computer? I think that is part of it, and its not that different with kids and their games I think sometimes. Others can sense it better than they seem to. I have found for me, timers are great! I don't like feeling "guilty" for too much time on the computer, and this makes me feel better and seeing many other things getting accomplished as well, helps it to all go more smoothly. Now in contest times, oh my...that CAN be a crazy time! One thing is for sure, the knowing in advance that Hubpages now gives (last few times I think?) is a GREAT help in this regard. This last time, I wanted to do more, but I just said you know...its fine. I just do my best.
Thanks so much for sharing, love your entries and having you as a friend on hubpages. :)
ha ha. This was great. I read this one word for word. Sometimes I have a hard time with poetry. You have to read them a few times to decipher them. I could totally relate to this. My cat likes to get in the way too, and when my boyfriend came home I took time out to hear about his day hunting. We do need to take time away for other things but I would rather be an internet addict than an addict. Well, besides a coffee addict. Can't stop that. My daughter got in the way today. She's been wanting to use the computer as her brother borrowed hers. We took some time to look at Twilight images on Google images. Have you tried Google Keywords Tool yet? That is great. I just discovered it today and am going to start using it for all my titles. It comes up with all kinds of good related keywords that you could use and has all the stats as to how many people in the world are using them. Up until yesterday all my keywords were all over the place, but thanks to izzy I learned how to refine them. Up until yesterday I was getting only a ten to twenty cent increase each day. Today it was almost a seventy cent increase. Still not much but better than before.
Hi MsLizzy, Are our husbands related? Haha... I finally trained my husband not to ask about spelling, but he's always talking to his computer and telling me that something isn't working right... Well, at least we don't have to share a computer anymore. :)
Uh-huh! I find myself getting irritated with constant interruptions to tend to ... well, life!
Hubby likes to surf as well, and from his computer comments and "argues" with people on the Yahoo news comments pages. The problem being, he is "spelling challenged," and I am interrupted about every 5th word I type.. "how to you spell.....???"
Yeah. Spoken well for all of us! The middle of the night is, indeed, the only interruption-free time zone.
Voted up across the board.
