Gone to Grandma's House to Play

Remember when you were a child and had the opportunity to go to Grandma's house to play? That was always a real treat and something my sister and I never turned down. We could play at and do all the things we weren't allowed to do at home. That is what made it so special. Here's to all of us that had so much fun because we had Gone to Grandma's House to Play.

Gone to Grandma's house to play

dress up and

fairies and

magical clouds floating around us today

Pirates and

peg legs and

Candyland

A slide down the banister, whee!

Pots and pans surround on the floor

cupboards and

cabinets to crawl in

Hide and seek-- where are we?

Trees and branches

flowers and bees

hopscotch stones

forts made of grass and twigs

Minnows and tadpoles

babbling brooks

runs and cold creeks

Dams to be made holding water

Swimming the river

rocky shore

swim to the dock

jump and dive swim away

Horses to feed and

bunnies to jump

chicks and robin's eggs to see

Nature's animals surround us round

Hikes in the woods

picnics too

Hot dogs and marshmallows and popping corn

Climbing the hill -- king of the mountain

Day winding down

Yawns to snuffle

Eyelids begin to droop

Fighting to stay awake

Heads hit soft pillows

tucked in snug and warm

a busy day

Gone to Grandma's house to play

Wow! You captured my childhood perfectly. There was freedom at my grandma's house, and so many adventures to experience. I have thought of those times often. Thanks for the memories, Suzette.

Bill: Glad you can relate! This was how grandma's house was for me. All the rules we couldn't break at home we could at grandma's and yet nothing bad ever happened to us. So, parents can be a bit uptight at times. Glad this brought back pleasant memories for you. Thanks for your visit and your comments.

What memories. My Grandmother and Grandfather lived on 110 acres when I was a child, and trips to "the farm" were always special. Thanks for the memories today. Take care, Suzette.

Love your poem and the memories that it evokes. You had such a happy time at Grandma's house. I'm afraid my memories are not all like that - Grandpa was the one, instead. I always got into trouble with Grandma. Can't imagine why! She got really cross when I used her best tea-tray to try and surf down her stairs, and you should have heard her when we played hide and seek and I hid in the Grandfather clock! Oh, dear!

Oh, how very delightful. One of my granddaughters always tells her daddy that she wants to go to Nannie's happy house ---my house!

I love it!

Voted up ++++ and sharing

God bless, Faith Reaper

Blossom: Oh dear! Grandma's house was a place where my sister and I could do no wrong. We were never in trouble there. Of course, I never took here tea-tray and slid down the stairs! lol That is too funny! You were just an active grandchild she didn't appreciate. Oh my! Thanks so much for sharing this gem and for commenting. Most appreciated!

No doubt a bittersweet poetic elegy with the classic tune by Barbara Striesand playing in my mind - The Way we were. Although the poetic facade is one of gaiety and happiness.

It's the best time in our lives and as children we don't really appreciate it in the moment until we grow up and look back or have grandchildren of our own and create the circle in life.

Thank you for your lovely buffet of comments just now and coming from someone special like you always puts me on cloud nine.

I am feeling much better today after my return home and although they were good to me in ER it's also nice to get out .....

sending you warm wishes from Colin and his cats Tiffy and Gabriel after watching the daybreak over the lake around 7am and it's now 9:38am lake erie time

Yes, today going to grandma's house is probably quite a different experience - video games, x-box, rental movies. In our day we actually played outside all day and only came in at night to watch TV. So different today. I'm so glad to hear you are feeling better and home is always better than the hospital. I did remember the cat's names. My memory isn't so bad after all. Hello and hugs to all three of you across the lake.

wayne: Thank you so much for your comments. I am happy this brings back such good memories for you. You are indeed fortunate to have a grandmother still alive. Alas, both of mine are gone and have been for a while. This is really a tribute to them both. Thanks for your visit.. Most appreciated.

suzette - You have captured the wonderful experiences so many of us had going to grandmother's house. And today, sadly, at many grandparent's homes there is too much available technology and therefore not enough one on one play and adventuring. Those really were the best days to be children. Great poem. Sharing. Theresa

Suzette, this is wonderful, absolutely charming. You've taken us back to that warm and loving place, 'grandma's house' I can still smell the bread baking, my childhood was blessed with not one, but two grandma's houses, great memories, loved this poem.

Thank you for sharing.

Theresa, thanks so much for reading this and sharing. Yes, we really played, good hard outdoor playing when we were kids! lol I don't know if this generation of kids is even up to that. It seems to be that they are so protected and coddled these days. I even think kids would deal with bullying better if they had to go outside and deal with the real world instead of the 'virtual world' of computers. We learned so much about how to deal with one another and get along playing outdoors all day. Thanks so much for the visit and for your comments, Theresa. Always illuminating.

tobusiness: Thank you so much for your lovely comments. Yes, wasn't grandma's house a great place to be and visit? The cooking was so good and my grandma made us fresh squeezed orange juice every morning for breakfast. I will always remember that. So glad you enjoyed this poem and that it brought back lovely memories for your too.

i love the pictures and wonderful poem, I sure missed my grandma. She stayed with us so we needn't visit her. I loved when she gave us treats during the evening, the grocery shop!

Sadly, I have on a glimmer of a memory of a grandmother who died when I was almost four. I do remember her overseeing my bath...she lived at our house. My parents were elderly when I was born (Momma was 48 and Daddy 56) so my grandparents were gone before I was on the planet..except for Dolly.

So I never knew these fun things at g'ma's but did have many many lovely experiences as a child growing up with elderly parents.

For that reason I made every effort to make home a wonderland for my eldest grandson and now for my baby grandson who turns five in a few days.

Great hub....brought so much up....

Angels are on the way to you this morning ps
