The Good Book

This Poem Appears

in my poetry collection (with some revisions), Digging to China, published by Sweatshoppe Publications in 2012.

Hunched over on a park bench—

A man.

Surrounded by trees

Couples walking

Foraging squirrels,

He doesn’t notice.

Head down

In a book,

Opened.

Front and back covers

Spread.

The flaps

and spine form

The letter M.

Lost,

Somewhere else.

There's nothing like a good book, except for a good poem, and a good poem about a good book trumps all!

Voted up.

Justin, I love to see someone lost in a good book. Especially out in public, in the scene you've set. It's some kind of vicarious inspiration for me. This poem captures those moments. Super well done.

Appreciatively, Stessily

Love to savor a poem and a good book. Both are a rare treasure. Art is creating, but most work that earns $$ these days lacks the creation, but a damn good gimmick is the theme!

Kelly, I almost always finish books but certainly the faster they start the easier they are to read.

Chris, will do. My wife would also recommend Life Expectancy by Dean Koontz or his Odd Thomas series.

Thanks for the recs. I read FIght Club by Palahniuk - sadly, not my cup of tea. But I'll check the others out and let you know what I pick. If you read Kite Runner, please let me know what you think. Happy reading!

If a book doesn't draw me in like that within the first chapter, then it's not for me. Once it has me, it sucks me into its world and I'm pretty much useless until it closes again. =) That's the best! Love that you can write about it like that. It's awesome.

Chris, at Thanksgiving, my friend Bill brought Kite Runner (we stay at a house in the mountains) and he said it was amazing. I hate it when books and movies are built up, but, hopefully, it live sup to the hype. My wife just read A Reliable Wife and couldn't put it down. I could also recommend Survivor by Palahniuk, American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis, or Autobiography of an Execution by David Dow. Trainspotting is also one of my favorites.

I have two more weeks of school. It's been a tough term. Can't wait to read and write solely for pleasure!

I'm readingthe Kite Runner. It's very good! Put it on your list of future reads - I absolutely love it and recommend it. Do you have any recommomendations? I'll be on break from school for a couple weeks. So a good book is always welcome.

Thanks tooms. I'm actually probably going to rework this to some extent. There's things about it that I''m not really thrilled with.
