Grandfar's Store

Grandfar's Store

By Chuck RitenouR

In the country, on a crossroads in a valley,

a crooked creek ran its course,

stood in time's antiquity, life's prosperity

and fondest memories of Grandfar's store.

Snow drifted deep down old route eleven,

while my face nearly beamed with anticipation

from the car well packed with clothes and presents

for Grandfar's store was just like Heaven.

From neighboring farms, miles they would travel

to sit on hardwood benches shoulder to shoulder

spring plowing and planting, soil's rich conversations

neither dull nor boring to this young man's attention.

Their broad weary faces scared by the weather

in their hearts they sang songs of the harvest,

and eyes danced with mirth while taking refreshments

at Grandfar's jokes about the fat farmer's daughter.

In the country, on a crossroads in a valley,

a crooked creek ran its course

stood in time's antiquity, life's prosperity,

my fondest memories of Grandfar's store.

I love this Chuck. I very easily envisioned the setting and heard the townsfolk spin their tales. Nice imagery!
