Green (A Short Poem for Poetry Month)

Source

April, Poetry Month

As April is "National Poetry Month" in America and Hub Pages and many of the hubbers I know are from there I decided to join in. I hope you don't mind. I probably won't be publishing a poem every day but this is my second poetry hub so far for the month. I saw a suggestion on another site to select a colour and write a poem describing it through the use of all senses. This is my attempt to do that.

"Green"

The pleasant musty smell

Of fresh cut grass.

The unmistakable flavour

Of brussel sprouts.

Successfully granted residency

A green card.

The furry mould that grows

On food left too long.

People's perception

Of inexperience.

The beautiful fragrant scent

Of a garden in bloom.

The wind rustling the leaves

Caresses my ears.

The tingly feeling you get

When holding a frog.

Granny Smith Apples

The satisfying "crunch!" of teeth

On a Granny Smith apple.

Unfounded fears revealed

A green tree snake.

The beautiful sight to behold

Of distant rolling hills.

Joy at Christmas

Finding the perfect tree.

The Perfect Tree
The Perfect Tree | Source

The pain of barbed rose stems

That prick your fingers.

The frustrated angry feelings

Of jealousy and envy.

The amature golfer's delight

One shot from the tee.

You never cease to amaze me, John. Even when no one else challenges you, you challenge yourself.

Great job of explaining green. This would be the perfect way to describe green to someone who can't see it.

One of my favorite smells is freshly cut grass.

This is great; I hope to get into the poetry this month too and add a poem to all I do. A little under the weather but hope to do more soon.

Hi Shauna. What can I say, I'm addicted to challenges, so much that I go looking for them. :) Glad you thought I was successful at describing green with this poem. Yes, fresh grass does smell nice doesn't it?

Thanks Bill, glad you like this one. Lucky you not having any grass to mow..bring on those seedlings. I have to mow 2 acres but it's been raining so has given me an excuse not to up until now. I can't put it off much longer though..just hope the ride on works, it is rather temperamental.

Well, John, you never cease to surprise me with your cleverness in your poetry. Fabulous senses of green and tell Eric you combined the smell of freshly cut green grass with the mowing sound, so there's the sound! Or either the fish jumping in the green pond ... Tee hee

Brilliant! Truly enjoyed reading this piece. April is always my favorite month on HP for all of the amazing poetry written by amazing poets, like yourself.

This is great fun; just the thing to make me want to dash outside and look at all the green things because it's Spring! I won't because it's pitch-black and I'd just fall over the green garden chairs.

Wonderful poem; made me smile. You came up with all sorts of definitions. I was saying 'oh yes!' to many of them. Not much that gets me talking to myself late in the evening - or is that just madness?

I'm still trying to finish one poem for this poetry month; too much going on! Might use the colour idea too.

Ann

Jodah profile image

Hi Ann, glad you had fun with this poem...talking to yourself in the middle of the night though, I wasn't expecting that effect :)

I should have turned this into a challenge for others to describe a colour for Poetry Month. Go ahead, I'd be interested to read it.

Hi John. I had almost forgotten about April and National Poetry Month. Your opening photo certainly awakens the senses to “green” and what spring and summer means to us all. Yet your imaginative poem takes us beyond that reference, in touch, taste, scents, feelings, how we “hear the green” in the leaves that rustle in the trees; and much more. This is so well done, John. I just love it. Voted up and shared. Happy Easter.

Jodah profile image

Jodah 20 months ago from Queensland Australia Author

Thank you for that wonderful comment Genna. It was interesting to think about how you could relate senses to a colour other than sight. Look forward to a poem or two by you for this month. Happy Easter.

What better celebration of green for April, Spring, and poetry month than a verdant feast for the senses? My two favorite parts were-

The unmistakable flavour

Of brussel sprouts.

and

The tingly feeling you get

When holding a frog.

Your poem made me happy!

Besarien, what more can a poet ask for than for their poetry to make the reader "happy". Glad you enjoyed this.

The poem was not what I was expecting at all. In so many lines the green was things I didn't like. So my reaction was different than I was prepared for. I know that all those unpleasant things about green is all life too, (like mold) but it made me see that what is good is not always pleasant. Voted up. Bob.

Jodah profile image

Jodah 19 months ago from Queensland Australia Author

Hey Bob, thanks for quite a different response, a few other readers said they don't like to touch frogs but other than that you have been the first to find most of these unpleasant. I admit I am not a real Brussels sprouts fan, and don't embrace jealousy and envy .. So yeah. Anyway at least you found enough here to be worth a vote up. That's what counts.

Up and shared my friend. I love this poem. Life has taken on many changes. I am now living alone. The bf is gone along with tools and apparatus needed to keep the green looking good. I still have my lawnmower. And of yesterday I received an early Mother's Day gift: a weedeater. After several tutorials, my oldest pronounced me competent to use this green eating machine.

Thank you for being you.
