Having to Face Reality

Reality can strike

Sometimes much too close

You can be feeling

As if you’re living in a dream

Then suddenly without warning

Reality comes calling

It’s nice to spend days

That are relaxing and filled with joy

They let us get free

Of all the worry and stress

But even on the most ideal of days

Something can come back to remind us

That everything is much too real

And reality comes crashing into our world again

It’s easy to pretend and to fantasize

That takes no effort at all

But when you have to face

All that is expected of you

That is when reality comes calling

And that can take the most effort of all

It would be wonderful

If there were days

When we could put reality

Up on a closet shelf

Then live our day

Free as a bird

Full of fun and enjoyment

And let reality back

Only the day after that

Reality isn’t an easy thing to face

It takes a lot of trying

To live day to day

I sometimes wonder my friend

Would it be any different if I were you and you were me

Would we understand each other better

And would your reality be the same as mine

Life is a journey we all have to take

To get to the promised golden gates

Perhaps if we shared a bit of each other’s lives

Reality would be easier to take

Sharing the love and the problems

Life isn’t always fun and games

But we must accept the fact

That reality is very much

A part of our lives

I have often wondered about swapping my life for the life of someone else. Then I realize I'd just be trading my troubles for theirs and I already know how to deal with mine ... at least I'm coping.

It would be lovely to just let go for a while. Think I'll go take a bubble bath and let your words sink in!

And most of the time, when reality does come, it comes with a hard slap in the face. How we deal with adversity defines who we are and how the rest of our lives will play out.

Very good piece, Rasma!

Great writing. Makes one glad to be who we are, we can deal with our own, hopefully and not trade for other problems.

Very insightful reflections! I often think like this too. We all need a little escape to recharge. :-) ~Lurana

Love this one - can certainly identify - sometimes reality hits when we least expect it - I do wonder about trading - but would we understand their problems. I imagine we all deal with reality in our own way -

Yes, the reality of life is hard no doubt, but it is life. I love the scripture that says that two are better than one, for when one falls down, his friend can pick him up. When those trials and tribulations come, we know we must continue through and we grow stronger each time, and become the person who we are called to be through those very trials. Everyone needs someone to listem at times.

Voted up +++ and sharing

God bless, Faith Reaper

When I glanced at your photo I thought it was the fires in California. Now that is a new reality for those poor people. But you are correct - reality comes calling often, just when you think you are coping! Possibly the best thing is to practice gratitude for what you have each day, and even that is no guarantee that a new reality will occur. Really thoughtful poem, and something to be reminded of each day.

So true, Rasma! We need to face reality face on but sometimes we need to fantasize too, to stay sane and maybe, focus better. A correct combination of the two for me.

Glad you enjoyed this Annie. I think the life we lead is meant just for us and not to be traded. Hope you had a nice bubble bath.

Glad you enjoyed this Wayne. So very true when we think that it's safe to come out from hiding there's reality however life can have it's enjoyable moments too just as long as we live it to the fullest every day.

That's exactly it wetnosedogs the grass is not always greener on the other side.

Always a pause is necessary to pull ourselves together and take a reflective look on life Lurana.

That's right travmaj. If we would trade with someone we probably wouldn't be happier and it's best to face our own reality.

Ruby that's how it is but then again isn't it wonderful that tomorrow does come so we have to find a way to balance the good with the reality and be happy to find idyllic moments.

That's so true Faith. Having someone to go on through life with and understanding and caring about you is a great way to face the reality that comes. Thanks for the vote and share. God bless.

That's it Vicki we must be thankful for each day we have and take the good with the bad because we can have good days which will make up for bad ones. Incidentally that pic is one which I took as the sun hadn't completely gone down yet.

That's right Rajan it's great to find that perfect balance between reality and fantasy. Thanks for the share and vote.

Glad you enjoyed this vocalcoach. Thanks for the share.

Glad you enjoyed this Diane. The opening pic is one which I took with the last bit of sun going down.

Martin what indeed is truth? Perhaps the right blend of reality and fantasy?

Well written poetry and so true. Reality does sneak in unexpectedly.

If you swapped with someone else you would just have to face their reality, I don't think there is any escape.

Great job.

Gypsy, very profound, we can never know what it is to walk in someone's shoes or experience their reality, but we can share and show empathy because we are all human.

I hope your reality is bright and sunny.

Hi gypsy-rose-lee.

Essential. Very interesting and of great significance . As if there is other side of reality: since early childhood -- maybe because of difficult life conditions , hard work , copying with existence , trying to accomplish yet another thing , every other short lived episode in my life was derived from reality as if never coming back to it.

Learning never stops.

Voting up and interesting .

So right Frank. It may be hard to face reality at times but switching places with someone won't make it any better. Thanks for the vote.

That's how it is DDE even if we'd like it to be otherwise. However if we can find a good balance between the fantasy and the reality life might be much easier.

The best thing to do Anna is to take the good moments and the dreams so that later on the reality won't seem too overwhelming.

Glad you enjoyed this Barbara. Nice to hear from you.

Hope your reality is sunny as well Jo. We just have to take what life gives us and sift out the very best.

That's so true Michael. I believe life would stop if learning stopped. We must always be prepared to face our own reality.

Absolutely the three best things Vellur - sharing, caring and loving.

"It takes a lot of trying To live day to day"..

Ain't that the truth Rasma! A man i deeply respect taught me that it's not what life puts in your path - it's HOW you handle what life puts in your path..

it's all about the management, cause - you said it - life strikes at the most unexpected of times!

Stay strong, my friend!

I am a huge Reba fan, but had not heard this particular song until now. It fits, but reality is what it is according to the person perceiving it. It is subjective, no matter what kind of life is lead. One's reality is one's own to be had.

As much as we have to reality is sometimes hard to face Jamie.

Absolutely right we've got to stay strong Leslie but if we can manage the reality in living everyday we should be alright.

That's it Skyslave we just need to find the right balance.

Absolutely shanmarie we each have to face our own realities and cannot live another life. This is a new song I believe for Reba.

Life is one incredible journey indeed Maria. I think we all sometimes need to look for a way to find the right balance. Thanks for the vote and hugs.

Gypsy Rose Lee, I seem once again drawn to this hub.

My sister and my brother yesterday both mentioned that they assumed I was extremely stressed out. I was surprised to hear this. Yes, my reality is probably whacked out right now. But I choose.

I choose not to deny what is challenging me, us, my kids. But to embrace what is so wonderful in these realities.

No, my husband does not have a steady paycheck. We are behind in student loan payments. That does stress me out, especially when my kids need something that will make them safe-- like new tires-- and I cannot help.

But the bright side of that is, the kids have to be creative and self-reliant. If I had the money, I would give it to them. They wouldn't learn the lessons they need for life.

Another issue I am facing has to do with societal judgments. We can be perfectly calm inside the hurricane, but the swirl of public opinion might take us down eventually. Focusing on my center, what really matters to me versus what matters to those around me, I become stronger.

Heck, no one will accompany me to those golden gates. I will have to represent myself. If I have allowed myself to become caught up in the swirling gossip, I will have lost my soul. The doors only open for those with heart.

Gypsy Rose Lee,

This poem touched me on so many levels. My reality is not what I thought it would be and so I work really hard at trying to accept the things I can not change. I pray a lot. I shed a lot of tears.

Best Always,

Barbara things in this world are not always as we would like them to be it is important to do for ourselves and not let others judge us. We know that we will do everything we possibly can and no one can tell us that we don't try. Right now we are having a tough time on our end and are practically broke. My hubby Martin's son has promised to bail us out for awhile but funds are still not here. In the meantime I bake my own bread and we have lots of salad from our provider the garden. And the way I see it is that God sees that we are doing what we can to help ourselves and not complaining and falling into despair and in this way He will eventually come through to help us. Sure hope things work out for you too. God bless.

Kim it seems life was never meant to be easy it has its challenges. However if we keep to our faith and rely on ourselves the Lord will be there to help us along the rest of the way. Keep praying and start smiling. God bless.
