His sword.....wrapped in blankets.

A perfect bundle lies wrapped in blankets
patiently awaiting orders.... from a soldier
But the man continues digging a perfect
hole ....stopping to rub his healing shoulder

The hole cubed.....squared exactly
at the top of the rise he watches
As his children play near the house
tears in his eyes.... his breath catches

"Thats about right" .... he lays down
the shovel .....his breath falters
Carefully opening the bundle... within lies
a sword ....a musket ......the horse halters

He survived the wars...the walking death
the prison camps too
And wonders of the words so long ago
"Uncle sam needs you"

Civil wars ...such a paradox.. to the bundle he throws his coat
of blue ...his hat.....his medals away
And last but no less........a picture of his
brother dressed in grey

At each shovel of dirt ....he grows weaker and
he grows stronger
Never again will he war against another man
blood will flow no longer

It's done now he takes her hand ....the mother
of his children ...they watch from above
As in the distance the children play
they walk together towards the love

Our country has such a diverse history , such a powerful call to do all the good of the world
from within and without our borders , Each time the world calls forth America .....she goes there in her best uniform ...the soldier ....without question.....
And America always sends her best.........
The Soldier.......

Thumbs up all around dad!! Finally a perfect depiction with words on the true heroes of all wars. How often we all take for granted, as we all lay our pretty heads on pillows all the men and women across seas... in all countries maintaining peace and placing their very lives on the line for this country and all us Americans!! Thanks for the reminder...love and hugs

Hey Sweety Pie, I miss you! I believe the most tragic in all of Americas time is the civil war. There is nothing worse than a people torn in two. And can you imagine a family torn by a war. Tha imagines of it happening again are way too much to bare...love and miss you always...oxoxoxoxoxxoxox Dad

Chspublish , yes they do , and when they are through paying the most , they return to homes of silence and even indifference at times to be forgotten untill we need them again. Thank you for sharing and caring..

As I read this a vision of Gone With The Wind came into view.. . You captured the continuing dream of war that embeds within every soul it touches. The call once made is answered by the soldier - the family and indeed all mankind, lead by the bravest and most giving. Thank you for this tribute to those who dared.

Thanks Laurie , It always intrigued me , what made a country at peace devide in two ,families included , and then war against each other. It still does. And yet ,I look at America today and see the answer a little clearer. Peace is such a fragile being. Be Well Laurie.
