Summer Night (A Poem)

Backstory

This poem was written in August of 2013, while I was on military tasking in Borden, Ontario. It is a poem of reminiscing a summer love that at the time, had only just ended, and ended terribly. So at the time of this I was heartbroken, and as I tend to do when I'm feeling melancholy, I turned to poetry. I writing to be a good way to express myself, and express myself I did.

The poem is largely narrative, and all a recollection of true events, or should I say mainly the events of one night, as romantic and movie-like as they may sound. This poem is about the last night that my summer love and I spent together, and wishing that it had never ended. It did end there, however, for we haven't seen each other since and I doubt we will ever again.

Summer Night

I remember that night you held me,

As we danced to our favorite song

It was two in the morning and it all played out like

Scenes that we only dream of

I didn’t believe in magic

Til I saw it shining in your eyes

I wanna say fate isn’t true

But why did I come to meet you

My, my, the stars they aligned

We had the time of our lives

We were a little tipsy

And the world was ours

On that summer night

I remember that night you looked into my eyes

And said “Hey, I think I’m love”

It was three in the morning and it all played out like

Scenes that we only dream of

I didn’t believe in magic

Til I saw it shining in your eyes

I wanna say I haven’t fallen for you

But why do I feel the way I do

My, my, the stars they aligned

We had the time of our lives

We were a little tipsy

And the world was ours

On that summer night

I remember that night you gave me one last kiss

And said “I’ve gotta go”

It was four in the morning and it all played out like

It was perfect, you know?

I’d like to say I knew

Exactly what I was getting into

You told me from the start

But the present was all I could see

Sometimes you can be blind at nineteen

That was then and this is now

You’re in a different city

And you’ve got your girl back home

Sometimes I wonder when you’re alone

If you ever remember

How the stars aligned

How we had the time of our lives

When we were a little tipsy and the world was ours

‘Cause now they’re just memories

We only dream of

Now you’re just a memory

I can only dream of
