Help Save This Good Life: Greed is Destroying Our Planet

Source

Money Rules.

I am saddened by the current and ever increasing desire for more more more. People are never happy with what they have. They seem to be focused solely on earning more money, often working longer hours at the expense of quality family time. Both parents work so they can afford a bigger mortgage on a fancier house and fill it with all the latest appliances whether they are needed or not e.g. a tv in every room, multiple games machines, the latest smart phones though their previous ones were still fine and only a year old, etc etc.

Big business and banks are only concerned about the size of their profits increasing and lining the pockets of their CEOs and shareholders, not the consumer. The majority don't seem to care about their fellow man or the environment around us. Our litter and waste is creating huge problems and destroying large areas and our fellow animal inhabitants. Many more people around the world are in poverty than well off and it seems the rich just get richer and the poor poorer. If every millionaire in the world just gave 1% of their income to fighting homelessness and poverty and it was directed to the right places by honest Governments and organizations the problem could be solved.

But we can all do our bit by not letting greed and the need for more more more control our lives. Buy only what you need, use less electricity and fuel, stop being so wasteful. Give just a little of what you have to the less fortunate. Buy a coffee or a sand which for the vagrant man or woman sleeping on the park bench, donate a little to a needy charity when you have a surplus, help out or donate to a thrift store or soup kitchen once a month. Just care! It will "help save the good life."

Help Save This Good Life.

by John Hansen © 2014

Help ensure our powerful nations

Enlist due care and ministration.

Let them show deliberation,

Protect our God's superb creation.

Some of us build our life's collection,

And seemingly without restriction.

Vainly seeking accumulation,

Every one needs some distinction.

These same lives now need dissection,

Heavy burdens need reduction.

Issues need a new direction,

So not to aid this world's destruction.

Greed and power ensure election

Over the need for education,

Or a belief in the resurrection.

Don't forsake our constitution.

Lately I have made connection

In my greedy incomprehension,

For the need of Earth's protection.

Ending the race towards extinction.

The Good Life

What is most important in life?

  • Money and possessions.
  • Good family and friends.
  • Equality and acceptance for all.
  • Health and happiness.
  • A world without war.

Nice! First, having no knowledge what an acrostic poem was until checking wiki I compliment your creative endeavor. Therefore the poem is inspirational as I did learn. Next, the theme is close to heart and very much appreciated. The ribbon running through opens the heart . . . while liking one central choice of words - dissection as remedy. That in both content and context offers pondering for me of least.

Thank you for reading and your wonderful comment. It is good when a hub can prove educational as well as just a good read. I'm glad you could relate to the message and you found inspiration in the words.

This poem packs a powerful punch of a reminder to all as to what really matters. Love your acrostic poem and they are not easy to do. Up and more and sharing. Have a great week, Faith Reaper

Wise words, John. Every time I see habitat destruction I die a bit inside but also recommit myself to doing what I can to help by picking up litter, feeding the birds, recycling, buying land and keeping it undeveloped. Everyone can make a difference.

Thank you Faith. I always appreciate your comments and feedback. This is only the second acrostic poem I have attempted. I'm glad it worked and got the message across. Thanks for voting up and sharing too. You have a great week too.

I feel the same way Flourish, hence the message in a lot of my hubs. I can see you are doing more than your share towards caring for the planet, and I hope more others take responsibility too.

Love the message, John! We can each do our part; only problem is, some of us are doing more than our part to make up for those who do nothing...we need to get everyone on board, and articles like this one will help.

John, you have used a tool to build a beautiful and important message. This a really unique hub one can see even before enjoying the read! ^

Thanks Bill. I am preaching to the choir with you, but I know you always support this message. You are right when you say that more people need to get on board so a few aren't shouldering the burden, but I have faith it will happen.

Thanks Jackie, that is a wonderful comment. I want my hubs to be different but to deliver a message. Glad you enjoyed this.

Jodah, I couldn't vote in your poll. To me, with the exception of the first choice, they are all important.

I left a comment and a question on your latest blog post. Nevermind the question. I'm pleased to see I already follow you!

I love your poem. You blended acrostic with rhyme to state a vital message. Well done!

Jodah profile image

Jodah 2 years ago from Queensland Australia Author

Hi Shauna, I already answered your question on my blog, thanks. Maybe I needed to have a choice "most of the above" in the poll. I appreciate your kind comments in relation to this poem, I know the subject appeals to you. Have a good day.

Jodah - Excellent acrostic poem with an urgent message. I cannot understand why so many people close their eyes and ears to the truth that humans are destroying the planet Earth through selfishness and greed. As Bill mentioned, that just causes those of us who accept the truth to try harder and make up for (some of) them and their destructive behaviors.

Voted Up++++ and shared

This is so important and you expressed it beautifully. Your collages are lovely. I want to make them, i've made one, but i have a lot to learn to make them beautiful..

Jodah profile image

Thank you for the compliment Jaye. Yes it doesn't 't seem fair that those who care have to wear the extra burden of those who don't, but life isn't about that. If we all had the "why should I do that if he doesn't attitude?" then nothing would ever be achieved. We just have to keep trying to get the word out there to inspire more people to take action. Thanks for the vote up and share.

An important appeal to us, the custodians of this starship Earth, on a general and personal level to take stock,

" As nature's laws take second place, to the greed of man's inhuman race."

Good message Jodah,

All the Best,

Health and happiness have so much value, can't put a number on it, but I'll be damn if they don't try.

Jodah profile image

I think they have already found a way Eric. They put additives in our food and genetically modify it so we get I'll and have to pay for drugs and medical procedures to make us well again...it's a carousel. Do they want us truly happy, I doubt that too. They try to make us so we aren't satisfied with what we have and always want more.

Yes, i see! You have done your part. But the insatiable greed and hunger for power made {our} politicians insouciant to the need[s] of the people. May they perish in their naughtiness!

Just coming around to this one again John! Still reads fresh! Have you ever considered reading your work out loud and embedding it here--tis is one piece that would really work that way!

Jodah profile image

Jodah 2 years ago from Queensland Australia Author

Thanks for visiting again Audrey and for that great tip. Oh if I had only been born with good oratory gifts..lol. I would not do it justice I am afraid though I know poetry has much more relevance when read by its author, so maybe I will pluck up the courage and do as you suggest at some stage.

I could not have said it better myself. As an older person, I have become very discouraged to see the way the world is going. I do not know how things got to be this bad, but surely we can renew ourselves.

Jodah profile image

Jodah 2 years ago from Queensland Australia Author

We have to be optimistic TIMETRAVELER2, no matter how bad it looks. I am confident that if enough people are determined to turn things around that it can happen. At least I hope so..thanks for reading.

John, a powerful and timely message indeed. If we do not value what we have, we will surely lose it. If do not learn from our mistakes we are doomed to repeat them. Nice work!

I knew someone who worked very hard trying to secure a future for their family. The problem was they worked so hard to secure a financial future and neglected the security of bonding which is so important in a family.

Jodah profile image

Jodah 14 months ago from Queensland Australia Author

Hi Dana, both those factors are important. You have to find the perfect balance however. It is easy to get carried away and blinded in the search of financial success.

Hi Jodah...

Thanks for the reminder of just how consumer oriented we have become. The past year or so has been a purging of sorts for me. As I have aged, lifestyle, priorities and needs have changed as well. lol... a man can only use 1 skill saw at a time... so why do I have 6? Might as well pass them down to others who have none.

Blessings from Canada

Jodah profile image

Jodah 14 months ago from Queensland Australia Author

Thanks for reading Rolly. Yes we all need a reality check from time to time. We cut right back on many electrical appliances, tools etc when we moved to the country, bu that've been gradually building up again...I have to put a stop to that and keep practicing what I preach,

It is easy to fall into that trap...the more, more, newer newer trap ....

Stopping, pausing even, for a few minutes to reflect and consider what we really value in our own lives and then what we value in the larger context is a good thing.

Thank you for the gentle reminder to do just that.

Angels are on the way to you this morning ps

Jodah profile image

Jodah 14 months ago from Queensland Australia Author

Yes it is too easy to fall into the trap ps. We all need a reminder now and then. Thanks for reading, and for the angels.
