He's had enough ..........

The soldier stands .......amid dead blue and grey
his steed beside him awaits his call
He pulls at the cinch as the horse blows
out his air......ready for the fall

He has watched the mayhem enough
there has to be another way
Din of thunderous cannon fire and crack
of muskets ....
.no reason to stay

The officers sit safely high in the field
watching the battle at hand
Planning ....ordering waving their arms
enacting another plan

And the blood colors it all .....the broken bodies
seeping back to the dust from whence they came
He takes a handfull of mane an moves
quickly to the saddle.....his eye's insane

The others watch in shock as he
spurs the horse hard towards the battle line
His hat brim flattens against his head
and he raises his sword one last time

And off into the smoke edged mist he storms
away as the battle churns
And when they look again for the soldier
a horse and empty saddle returns

And once again one man is freed from war........

A touching lament for all those that fight in wars. The way to end it for one man at least. Very good up and beautiful, Thanks,

Peter

Mankind have always had wars. The smell of gunpowder, the incendiary flash of napalm, the call of the bugle, the martial beat of drums, the screaming eagles on their bombing runs, the savage Berserker in their frenzied rush....for gold, for glory, for a just cause? It's in our DNA,we're program for war :)

I imagine many things of this sort happen in wartime. Especially true, I imagine, if the soldiers see no sense to the war.

Very somber. I wish he'd just rode into the wind, never looking back.

Oh, my, what a true and moving comment on war! I can see the empty saddle, the fallen soldier; and way away, lurking in the back, the generals sending women's sons to their deaths.

If the saddles were filled with generals, there wouldn't be so many wars. If they were filled with mothers, there'd be no wars at all.

You have written a sad tale that holds true throughout millennium. From dust to dust as the heartache continues. Poignant and bitterly beautiful.

ahorseback...I am floored at the emotion this stirs...how very unfortunate, how absolutely sad..the reality of it; the upper echelon above the frey; watching as if they have the right to be removed from the bloody reality they direct.

".....his eye's insane." says so much...the hopelessness of it, the pent up energy which should be meant for survival but, in the face of his options; he felt this the only way out.

If anyone wonders about war...during any year, era, decade, century...I highly suggest they read this, first. You and Mr. Alastar Packer might enjoy one another's work (if you haven't as of yet)...historical and poetic justice!

Beautiful in your recognition and ability to empathize, Awesome in the power of it, UP for obvious reasons

!!
