Home From The Sea ..........

The high sea ...... the trailing sea gulls
the dolphins guiding me in
The north Atlantic sends me home
from shadowing the whales again

Not a whaler or a fisherman's son
......but just a drifter manning the sails
Through the night seas and the cross
currents of danger destiny prevails

Listen.... listen to the wind in the canvas
begging me soulfully back to land
Surely a gift of brass compass guides me
tiller firm in hand

Once aloft and the sails set
the sky could prove me wrong
As the wind pulls again in the ropes
whistling a lonesome song

Above me the crescent moon is swallowed
by clouds of unknown destination
Racing past in the night wind running
from eventual condensation

Yes.......I see the lights along the coast
the ones I know so well
Now to avoid the rocky shoals
coaxing me into hell

My tired hands make do the ropes
of safety from impending storm
And in safe harbor again ....I smile
though my mind tired and worn

Come...... join me now in the pub I'll buy
you all a round
We'll laugh and sing the sea shanties
till morning comes around

I've noticed that you write about the sea often, as if it calls you. I love the sea. Think i'll join you all at the pub for a taste of wine. Thank you. Enjoyed your poetry ..

This is hauntingly beautiful to me. My father was a Merchant Marine and probably felt a lot the way your lovely poem reads! :)
