How Do I Write a Love Poem?

If I Could Write a Love Poem

Previously I wrote a poem called "If I Could Write a Love Poem." It was very well received and even selected to turn into a song that was recorded on an album by award-winning British/Israeli singer Tally Koren.

I imagine that having a poem deemed good enough to record as a song means I can now say, "I can write a love poem." This is the sequel, which I had published at The Creative Exiles but felt as the original poem was here so this one should be here as well.

“I’d pull the clouds down from the sky to wrap you in their softness, so you will never die."

How Do I Write a Love Poem?

How do I write a love poem?

First, I choose the words with care,

That compliment your features

Such as eyes, complexion, hair.

I describe what makes you special,

Why I love you more than life,

The reason why I bent my knee

To take you as my wife.

How do I write a love poem?

I pull clouds down from the sky

To wrap you in their softness,

So you will never die.

I steal the tides that wash ashore

To describe your wavy tresses,

And strip the flowers from off the trees

To clothe you in fine dresses.

"I'd squeeze the love out of my heart, the words drip out like blood.."

How do I write a love poem?

I learn from poets past,

Like Browning, Burns, and Dickinson,

Or Byron, Poe, and Frost.

I squeeze the love out of my heart.

The words drip out like blood,

And form a raging river

That traps you like a flood.

How do I write a love poem?

I just gaze into your eyes,

Your shining smile becomes my muse

And soothes this writer’s cries.

Compare These Classic Love Poems

The following two poems are written in very different styles, but both beautiful love poems none-the-less.

A Red, Red Rose

by Robert Burns

O my Luve's like a red, red rose
That's newly sprung in June;
O my Luve's like the melodie
That's sweetly played in tune.

As fair art thou, my bonnie lass,
So deep in luve am I;
And I will luve thee still, my dear,
Till a' the seas gang dry:

Till a' the seas gang dry, my dear,
And the rocks melt wi' the sun;
I will luve thee still, my dear,
While the sands o' life shall run.

And fare thee weel, my only Luve,
And fare thee weel awhile!
And I will come again, my Luve,
Tho' it ware ten thousand mile.

She Walks In Beauty

by Lord Byron

She walks in beauty, like the night
Of cloudless climes and starry skies;
And all that's best of dark and bright
Meet in her aspect and her eyes:
Thus mellowed to that tender light
Which heaven to gaudy day denies.

One shade the more, one ray the less,
Had half impaired the nameless grace
Which waves in every raven tress,
Or softly lightens o'er her face;
Where thoughts serenely sweet express
How pure, how dear their dwelling place.

And on that cheek, and o'er that brow,
So soft, so calm, yet eloquent,
The smiles that win, the tints that glow,
But tell of days in goodness spent,
A mind at peace with all below,
A heart whose love is innocent!

Congratulations that it's a song! That's beyond awesome. Your words here are beautiful. Now I will have to read the original poem/song.

Thank you, Shanmarie. It was a shock to me when it was selected to be art of Tally's album. I appreciate your comment.

John, I do remember your love poem and remember how much I loved it, but maybe missed that it was chosen as a song for an album! Wow, that's so cool.

You certainly know how to write love poems and thanks for including in this new poem just how to write one, so that maybe husbands and lovers out there will write a lovely one to their honey... Love the other two poems you included and the wonderful video.

That quote by Marley is too funny.

Blessings and keep spreading the love : )

Wow, that is something else! It doesn't surprise me though as far as your talent for writing poetry. Hope you get royalties! It must be so thrilling. Hope you can put the song here eventually!

You write it so beautifully and then you ask how do I write a love poem!

I had enjoyed the first one and this one again is so well expressed and the words flowing with ease.

Congratulations that the earlier one was selected as a song. Great going indeed, Happy for you!

Thank you for sharing!

Hello, Theresa. Thank you for reading this and your lovely comment. Yes, I added the info about the poem being made into a song but you had probably already read the hub before that. Blessing to you also.

Jodah 2 months ago from Queensland Australia Author

Hi Jackie. Yes, it is exciting. I did have a link to the song on the hub when Tally first recorded it, but it has been taken off the Internet, probably because it is on her album and not a single now. Hopefully I can get another link in time.

This is great! I love your rhyme. It's beautiful and isn't forced at all. Lord Byron, whom I love, has nothing on you! Congrats on your earlier poem being made into a song. Wow!

I love what Marley said. :-)

Well Jodah, you do these love-poems exceptionally well. The video is awesome to and you chose two of my favourite poets. Burns remain vibrant, alive... like an intoxicated man; Byron is sublime; sure-footed ...

Very fragrant Hub, this. Have a blessed Sunday.

Hi John. I think I would turn up the scales a notch and claim, "I wrote a love song. Rather than a love poem." You have the proof, in that it is recorded.

You will never find me writing a poem, then on the same page put a Byron or a Burns to compare it to.

Well done.

Jodah profile image

Jodah 2 months ago from Queensland Australia Author

Hi Mike. Thanks for that..you are right, I can now say I have written a love song :) Now I hear it is back on Soundcloud I can include the link again. Haha..yeah I guess it was a brave move including the Byron and Burns poems, but hey, Victoria said I outdid Byron :) now that's cool.

John,

What a treat. Chill bumps. I am such a fan of Soundcloud for it is really where my son got his start. In fact, a duet he did with his gf got Soundcloud Song of the Day several years ago. If you want to check it out, look up Joseph Houck and the song, "Intertwine."

Tally really did your poem justice. So impressed with you and your poetry.

Blessings,

Kim

John, congratulations on having your poem put to music. That's the highest honor, in my opinion.

I love this one as well. In fact, I think your love poems far exceed Lord Byron and Robert Burns. I mean that.

I love Bob Marley's quote. Not only is it profound, it makes perfect sense.

Jodah profile image

Jodah 2 months ago from Queensland Australia Author

You humble me, Shauna. Far exceeding poems by Robbie Burns and Lord Byron, really? I will accept that wonderful compliment though :) yes it certainly was an honour to have my poem selected as a song. Thanks my friend.

Well done, John! What a coup, getting a poem recorded! I'm impressed. But then I'm not surprised as your poetry is so good.

I have to say Byron soars way above Burns in my book but those poems are both indeed beautiful love poems.

Ann

Jodah profile image

Jodah 2 months ago from Queensland Australia Author

Hi Ann, well Lord Byron is much more eloquent and refined than Burns, but the Burns has a special rough and raw appeal I think. Thanks for the kind comment about my poetry.

I agree totally and sometimes the 'rough and raw' has more impact.
