I Didn't Understand Death At All

Everything I did was finally showing,

I hated my life for all the wrong reasons,

the lit candle was throwing

my own shadow on the rough floor,

it was the last time I’d see it,

then no more,

a voice came softly to me on the air,

someone was there,

but I just couldn’t see,

I turned around so sharp

that my breath left me,

my soul I knew God could not receive,

then I saw a light,

for a moment,

I thought my eyes would deceive,

the dark shadow came toward me,

he was staring at me over his drawn up knees,

seconds became minutes

and minutes became hours,

my emotions would tip,

the sensations would flip,

waiting was like watching honey drip,

death crouched in my shadow,

there, very near,

and what disturbed me most,

was the lack of fear,

but more profoundly,

I felt like a ghost,

oh, but I was wrong,

and that’s when death came along,

with crude, pounding power,

very strong,

the light was lifting,

my soul was drifting,

and yet I never moved,

then I took my last mortal look,

my desk, the chairs by the fire,

my pictures, a coffin, the Bible,

God’s book,

life would then fall,

after all the waiting,

I didn’t understand death at all.

Im thinking none of us really grasps the understanding , but we do know the fear ,me? im not afraid , not at all. Wow, Frank, this is a powerful and gripping poem about death. I've never read this one but I guess you wrote it before I joined HP. Excellent.
