I Don't Do Poetry... A Poem

I don’t do poetry she said with a sneer

I don’t read Bronte, Keats or Shakespeare

So please don’t try and waste my time

With useless words written to rhyme

I have no patience for flights of fancy

Flowering words describing such beauty

I don’t see the sense or reason

In writing down such foolish notions

I don’t mean to sneer and upset you

To make joke of the writing that you do

It’s just all been said and done before

Is there any real reason to write more?

After all, there are only so many ways

To describe the light of a new day

To make us all read of loss and pain

And how hard it is to stay fully sane

Not to forget the poems meant to confuse

So full of layers with hidden issues

Written to drive me mad with thought

I hated the days when these were taught

Elizabeth Barrett Browning
Elizabeth Barrett Browning

So keep your rhymes to yourself

And let them gather dust upon the shelf

I don’t care what they are all about

Even if you start to sigh and pout

I won’t ever do poetry she said while frowning

No Byron, Poe and Browning

It’s not meant to be personal at all

Just my own closed minded call

....well coming from the anti-poet himself I really loved the sense of fun and irreverence in this piece - but then again I love and cherish everything you write.

lake erie time 2:11 as a witch just flew by the full moon and yes I am posting this 'beauty' to my Facebook page with a direct link back here....

I have to agree with the Epigramman. The sense of tongue in cheek humor and fun left me smiling throughout. This is a gem.

Dear Nighthag,

This is pure brilliance ^_^ You sent me back to my past actually with this piece and made me listen again to the dreadful ones who scolded my poetry... although, it sounded rather nice this time as they were telling your words. Ah well! This was a fun and delightful read.

It was a lot of fun to write, using all the negatives that I or others have said about the "task" of reading poetry, so so glad that you enjoyed it, your comments are always the highlight of my day :)

I am so glad that it made you smile, thanks heaps for the visit :)

Ah the days of the student learning the dreaded rules of poetry. they still give me nightmares :)

this was actually inspired by not only my own doubts about my writing but some of the general attitude I have come across since I started writing poetry and sharing it... I am so glad that it came across light hearted I was hoping that it would :)

This is a brilliantly fun read, nighthag! One any one of my sons or siblings could have written!!! Nice job!

I didn't start writing poetry until I came to the Hubs just over a year ago. I wrote short stories, dabbled a little in verse but very little indeed. I was inspired by Wayne Brown at the time, who also started off with short stories and then moved into poetry and he was inspired by Rawlus who unfortunately has chosen to leave us at the hubs, although I keep in touch on Face Book with him and read some of his scribes there.

Poetry has become my primary choice of scribes. I have found and audience in various places like the Hubs, my own couple of sites and fellow poets who share through emails.

You are one of my favorites as well and you weave your magic so well. I loved this one, an interesting twist indeed. Rated up and awesome, Bravo...take a bow.

as always your comment brings a smile to my face, I am so glad that you had fun reading it :)

I too have mainly been a short story writer dreaming of writing a successful novel, keeping any poems that i ever wrote to myself as they were always about deeply personal things, but it wasn't until the encouragement that I too received here at hub pages (from writers such as yourself) that I turned to poetry as a creative outlet, its been a fantastic journey of discovery for me...

I am so so glad that you liked this...thank you

Awesome , At times I don't even understand where it comes from but write I do ! You, the poet understand! .This should make them think!......:-}

:) its no fun to have those close to you look down their noses at writing that we do, simply because they lack the understanding or patience to simply check it out...

I am so glad that you liked this... coming from an accomplished writer such as yourself means a lot... thank you

my family know I write, but have never read anything, I have a couple of friends that read what I post here at hub pages, but other than that no. this was written about a dear friend of mine, a great reader and writer who flatly refuses to even glance at any poetry that I or anybody else writes, it can be more than frustrating...

Its why my friends and fans at hub pages means so much to me, without the support I have found here I may have given up on my writing altogether by now :)

It seems apparent that you have a single person that has inspired this tyrade... It's such a shame, being a firm and devoted follower of yours (even if I never leave comments) I feel that that person, especially if it's a close friend, is missing out on an integral part of your very special psyche. My dear sweet Nighthag, please don't stop. I love Love LOVE your short stories, but your poetry has found a special niche in my collections.

Thanks, your very enuthisactic support means a lot

I am in total agreence that we both should keep writing and follow our dreams

After all if we aim for the moon we may be lucky enough to land in the stars :)

I like this poem about poetry, as anyone familiar with my own such work will realize, but I won't try here to add to the wide range of good comments you already have.

By contrast, I don't understand the put-down pseudonym, but it no doubt makes an important personal point that hopefully has positive meaning for someone.

Thanks so much for visit, this was written about someone very close to me who refuses to even glance at the my poems written here, I have quoted her in some of the lines here almost word for word

its not meant to be mean spirted just to express how frustrating this attitude can be for us poets in the todays world

its so very very nice to have you comment again :)

it is written about a close friend who I have admired for years so it was a bit hurtful that they have such a strong stand against poetry, especially mine :)

I am aiming to write more short stories soon so I hope to have more of your very welcome and missed comments

thank you for your all your support it means the world to me to have a friend like you
