I Fell Into the Rabbit Hole

The rabbit-hole went straight on like a tunnel for some way, and then dipped suddenly down, so suddenly that Alice had not a moment to think about stopping herself before she found herself falling down a very deep well. Either the well was very deep, or she fell very slowly, for she had plenty of time as she went down to look about her and to wonder what was going to happen next. ― Lewis Carroll, Alice in Wonderland

Rabbit Hole You Say?

The true meaning behind "Alice in Wonderland" has had more speculation than the petals on the Queen's roses. It seems Alice's trip is a symbol of loneliness and, maybe or, the 'rules' in Wonderland reflect on justice in the real world. (Not a very good reflection I might add.) While it was originally a story written for little girls the meanings run rampant. Political satire? Perhaps.

Rabbit hole? Certainly it can feel as if we've fallen into a rabbit hole and can't get out! Have you ever felt that way? Look around you today. Is this the world you've always known?

If we don't change, we don't grow. If we don't grow, we aren't really living. - Gail Sheehy

I certainly believe change is necessary but change for the better. One step forward and two steps back gets us nowhere.

Has the world gone mad?

“You're entirely bonkers. But I'll tell you a secret. All the best people are.”
― Lewis Carroll, Alice in Wonderland

Has the World Gone Mad?

"The dirty little secret is , we are now at 17 years and 8 months of no global warming," says Roger Pilon, Vice President for Legal Affairs at the Cato Institute. "Their models have failed year in and year out, " he says of the scientists who comprise the 97 percent consensus the administration frequently cites.

Global warming. Who decided there is no such thing as global warming? Fox News has on their website; http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2014/04/09/climate-change-fiercely-debated-with-widely-divergent-facts/

Is our administration wrong? Is there no global warming? Many scientists believe there has been no global warming in the past 17 years 8 months. Who is right? I do know in a journal from 1836 the temperature in New York, where I currently live, was minus 28 in the winter and 100 in the summer. I, thankfully, haven't seen those temperatures lately, or in my lifetime. I can't honestly say whether or not there is global warming but I know this ongoing debate with the planet's future at stake sure makes me feel like I'm in a rabbit hole and if they don't get it straightened out my rabbit hole may be the best place to be.

There was a time when it was okay to disagree. If you didn't like something going on in politics it was okay to say you didn't like it. Things have changed in the rabbit hole. Now if you don't like what a politician says you are a dissenter!

It's not that I'm picking on the government, but what about income taxes. Taxes are taken out of our paychecks every week. We pay taxes on everything we buy and yet by April 15th we have to file our personal income tax! What purpose does this serve, other than getting more money out of John Q. Public? Am I in a rabbit hole or is this a waste of time and money?

Another thing, can you explain how our government can track our every move through our cell phones but all of the governments of the world can't find an airplane?

What about the worldwide financial crisis? Where has all the money gone? Overspending, overtaxing, maybe we should be in a rabbit hole trading rabbit hides for food.

Stay alert!

“My dear, here we must run as fast as we can, just to stay in place. And if you wish to go anywhere you must run twice as fast as that.”
― Lewis Carroll, Alice in Wonderland

Has This Happened to You?

Okay, I buy a subscription to a magazine and by the second month of the subscription I'm getting calls and letters to renew my subscription. Is there something wrong with this picture? Am I in a rabbit hole? Speaking of calling, what's with the "Do Not Call List"? I registered for the "Do Not Call List" and now I get more calls than I did before? ...rabbit hole!

May I throw in health insurance here? Not ObamaCare as that is a whole entity unto itself, but for those of us with MEDICARE and a secondary carrier, why is it we still have to pay for doctors or prescriptions for example, when we have two different kinds of insurance? I really am in a rabbit hole and I can't get out!

“It was much pleasanter at home," thought poor Alice, "when one wasn't always growing larger and smaller, and being ordered about by mice and rabbits. I almost wish I hadn't gone down the rabbit-hole--and yet--and yet--...”
― Lewis Carroll, Alice in Wonderland

Do you sometimes feel like you're in a rabbit hole?

See results without voting

There's a quote out there that I'm going to probably misquote here but it goes something like this, its surprising how dumb your parents are when you're eighteen, but how much they've learned by the time you're twenty-one. So many oddities in the rabbit hole! Just as we seem to have things figured out, they change.

When I look around and see cell phones in everyone's face I KNOW I'm in a rabbit hole. There was a time we didn't want to answer the phone!

So, I've kind of come full circle here, from the "Do not call list" to the perpetual phone! What drives you into the rabbit hole? Do you feel like you've been there all your life or did you just fall in? I really think at one time or another we find ourselves in the rabbit hole, I hope you get out!

“If everybody minded their own business, the world would go around a great deal faster than it does.”

Oh, yes....I am definitely in a rabbit hole! Sometimes I'd like to move to a desert island and just live by myself away from the stress of just everyday life. It is so hard to get anything done with businesses anymore. I'm never able to talk to a real live person anymore.

Cell phones are driving society into a world of lost communication. I could go on and on!!

Great Hub! Voted UP, etc. and shared all around!

Tillsontitan, this is very interesting. I am sure I fell down a rabbit hole accidentally or when I was sleepwalking. Some things just don't make any sense and they are changing so quickly. Everything is made overseas now, even call centres are all in foreign countries. When I bought my last cell/mobile phone I said I just want a phone to make and take calls. I don't want to use the Internet on t or watch movies etc.......they thought I was crazy. Anyway, voted up.

Am I glad to see you! Whether in or out of the rabbit hole! Love this hub, GF. Fabulous as always. I must ask myself many of these very questions, repeatedly.

It confuses and saddens me much too often....the more aware we become. A Rabbit Hole, deep into the woods, peaceful and camouflaged sounds like the plan for me. Sounds as though it may be safe and comfy.

"Just as we seem to have things figured out, they change." That brings back memories....I don't know who said this originally, but my sister and I quoted it often, "Just when I've come up with the answers, they change the questions!" It seemed the perfect comment during total frustration....to avoid exploding....

Again Til, fabulous hub and it's SO good to see you! ...UP+++Pinned & tweeted.

Nice rant, Alice! :) Seriously, don't even get me started about our government, and about society, and about the lack of community, and compassion, and empathy...I'm going to try to relax now. :)

Your yard must either be full of rabbit holes or you have dug a hole near China by now. :-) I just do not answer my phone unless it is someone that I know. I stopped all subscriptions. I do not get involved in politics or anything which I do not have to. I voted this up.

A person certainly could suffer from cognitive dissonance in a society as permeated with lies and fraud as the one we live in. But it's pretty easy of figure out: When someone wants to defraud you or exploit you, the only way they can get you to act contrary to your own interests is to lie to you. Since fraud and exploitation is now this country's chief form of economic activity, the lies and fraud are pretty thick. This situation is unhelpful to those engaged in honest economic activity, so there is a tendency for ever more people to "turn pirate" in preference to walking the plank. Unless you're practically a hermit, you are apt to find yourself surrounded by pathological liars, which is disorienting.

How true, Mary. It's no wonder that we feel like we're stuck in a Rabbit Hole. So many technological changes, societal changes, food consumption changes, seed copyrights, cellphones, GPS, spying on normal folks - it's true, we're "Living in a state of future shock". The future is here.

Hi Mary. First of all it's nice to see you back here. I think we've all fallen into the rabbit hole at one time or another. You touched on many of my pet peeves here; taxes, health care, the do not call list (omg). I sure hope we're doing the right things for future generations. Welcome back and have a great weekend.

Great article and this rant is so on target. I think the amount of texting and talk on cell phones is killing meaningful conversations. I relate to that rabbit hole feeling. Up and awesome.

Voted up and interesting. Both my hubby and I fell into the financial rabbit hole and when we thought we might get out the currency in Latvia changed to Euro. Now we have fallen down deeper and can't seem to catch that darn rabbit. I think it's time to give up and just sit down and have a cup of tea with the Mad Hatter lol Passing this on.

Hiya, I love the last Lewis Carroll quote, so darn true! lol! and yes I live in the rabbit hole too! nothing makes sense to me! As for global warming, Sir Patrick Moore, one of Britains greatest all time Astronomers used to say, 'Global warming? Bah! What a load of tosh! On Mars global warming is happening at the same rate as earth, how many Martians do you know that have central heating?!' LOL! so in other words, our warming is just a normal time in the Universal cycle! So I know that one, the others? I have no idea! have a great weekend, nell

Hi Dear Mary,

So lovely to see you back writing! Boy, that rabbit hole is getting deeper and deeper it seems to me too. Almost hard to recognize this world indeed. Lots of Mad Hatters running around too.

Up and more and away

Blessings always

I did a piece on the Do Not Call List, which you most likely saw. Yes, things are askew, as we as humans, tend to follow the leader. However, that is something that I never did, even as a child, and as such, learned to think for myself. Of course global warming as real, and I can tell you a lot about it as a biologist. It affects our animals and will do so with the rest of the food chain. A great take with Alice in Wonderland, one of my favorite books. It was a dream creation then, but now, it is a reality.

When my husband got sick I thought I was in a rabbit hole and still do. How can people be working at hospitals and get everything so wrong. Trying to deal with insurance companies, drug stores, doctors and nurses that act like the caretaker isn't standing in the room, but I'm the only one that can take care of things. The worst of the worst the ladies that make the appointments. When will they get things right!! Sorry if someone on here has that kind of job I'm sure you do great at your job but we have some real ding-a-lings here.

Global warming, just live in my neck of woods and find out there sure is not global warming.

Voted up.

Thank you all dear friends. My rabbit hole got deeper when a bulging disk in my lumbar spine decided to pinch a nerve! It seems every time I try to climb out of the rabbit hole I fall further in. Next step for my back is a spinal injection.

I know what you mean Mary. I sometimes wonder how our young people would function without cell phones!

DDE, glad you agree and appreciate your votes.

It does seem we're in a rabbit hole Jodah. I loved it when the telephone salesman tried to convince me I could see full length movies on this phone or that. I asked why I would do that when I have a 45" TV! Thanks for the vote.

Missed you too Paula. Thanks for the votes, pins and tweets. Your saying reminds me of the saying, "just as I saw the light at the end of the tunnel, somebody turned it off." Meet you in the rabbit hole.

I knew you'd jump right in Bill. Thanks.

Thanks for the vote Examiner. So you've met my dog? Lots of holes but my dog eats the rabbits, hmm, another hub....

Mckbirdbks, point well taken.

So Blueheron, I guess the pirate population has exploded!

Yes Peg, the future is here and we don't know where it is ;)

Thank you Blossom.

Thanks for the welcome back Bill. Unfortunately our times give us plenty to have peeves about. Have a good one my friend.

I'm sure on some level you can relate Frank.

Thanks Pamela we are kindred spirits.

So sorry Gypsy but I totally understand, the world's finances are all turning to ruin, rabbit hole after rabbit hole.

Oh Nell love the Mars comparison. Maybe we should all move to Mars.

Dear Maria, hare raising it is ;). Have a great day.

Faith I think I know more Mad Hatters than Alice's :)

Thanks Jamie.

Me too Avianvoice. The independence I learned as a kid has done me well! I have no doubt you see the effects go global warming. Thanks for reading and the vote. Hope to get back to reading hubs soon.

Moonlake I can totally understand since I'm dealing with the medical profession myself right now. I sometimes think they are on another planet!

I think I am living in a rabbit hole. Really, everything is a mystery - from the doings of governments to the habits and behaviour of people. Solution: Make the rabbit hole your comfort zone and let God's water run over God's land....

Hi Mary. I can so relate to this hub. Every time I am starting get a little ahead of things, something pulls me back in to the rabbit hole. Martie has the right idea, I think - make that rabbit hole a comfort zone. There are some things in today's world we just cannot fight, but we do have our opinions and a voice.

Great hub. Voted up and sharing.
