I Was Not Selfish for Letting You Go - a Poem about Love and Letting Someone Go

Working with Microsoft Paint: Dear John

No, I was not being mean

And I was not selfish

when I left after short goodbyes.

More than a cliché—

Cold as ice but real.

I break through muffled cries.

I was not selfish

As I was never—

But you can’t know how I feel . . .

The deepening cuts,

The daily raw wounds

That neither one could heal.

It wasn’t about me

But yet it was

The things I couldn’t share.

I no longer could hide

The force that drove me

With you so unaware.

I couldn’t unleash

The demons that chased.

That just wouldn’t be fair.

And if I did

Then what of it?

I don’t know you’d even care.

Sometimes I would speak

You didn’t relate

So why should I even try?

So don’t say I’m selfish

For letting you go

When I had to say goodbye.

Kelley--Maybe you should share it with your friend--or not. :-) It's hard to get involved. Saying goodbye is horrible but necessary sometimes. Thanks for commenting. :-)

I can relate to this Victoria, I just went through it a few months ago. The feelings last much longer though.

Debbie, it was actually a little scary to publish this one as it is some others, as I share feelings I've felt. But it makes me feel good that so many people can relate. So it's all worth it. Thanks so much for your support!

Yes, I relate to this too and you have put down the feelings in words so well, Victoria.

"The things I couldn’t share

I no longer could hide

The force that drove me

With you so unaware"

Its makes for a place in a relationship that is very, very lonely. Beautiful raw poetry about taking a stance for the better. Thank you for sharing, my votes and best wishes to you .

This was so honest, it instantly brought back emotions I felt in the past. Thanks for sharing so much of yourself. It's a good example of what real writing is all about.

A beautiful poem Victoria. What isn't said or written is reason enough to say good bye. Love is a music which can not escape the ear. If we are trying to hear it, it isn't there. Saying good bye is a prerequisite to saying hello. Be well.

Letting someone go is the most unselfish deed. It means you are not forcing that person to stay when that person doesn't really make an effort to understand you.

Very deep poem Victoria. Touches the soul.

There is much painful truth in this poem. Sometimes trying to remain together when communication attempts have broken down is more painful than moving on and freeing both parties for a new beginning.

You are so talented Vicki! You flutter between poetry and prose, information and soulful works, and it is seemingly effortless. Love it girl! Great job once again.

Great poem Victoria Lynn. I was once greatly criticized for jsut saying goodbye, for not allowing "closure" when, really, closure had been like a slamming door, simply unheard. There was nothing left to say. Up!

Sounds like the relationship was one-sided. It is hard to build lasting relationships if the other person is not willing to listen. Good share on this thought.
