I Will Always Be “Dad’s Girl”

The play house my Dad built for me
The play house my Dad built for me | Source

My Dad

When I was a kid aged about 7 or 8 years

My Dad built me a play house

It wasn’t a flat pack or a kit

He made the whole thing himself

It had a lock on the door

And a window that opened

I loved that house

Dad cut each and every roof tile by hand

He leaded the window

It even had a pretend fireplace

I loved that house

My imagination would run wild

When I played in my house

My dreams became reality

Some days

It was a shop

And I became a shop keeper

Some days

It was a library

And I was a librarian

Some days

It was a school

And I was a teacher

I really loved that house

Dad made me some stilts

They made me 6 feet tall

Dad made me a kite

It was the biggest and the best

I love my Dad

Dad made me a sledge

It was wooden and strong

When the snow came

We went sledging together

It was the best time

I love my Dad

He didn’t use to hug me

And he didn’t say

I love you

Dad called me ‘his girl’

And I really love my Dad

That was my dad

That’s how I want to think of him

He was so clever

He could make anything

I was never afraid when Dad was there

Dad was my hero and I loved him

The phone rings

It’s the hospital

How many times now?

I’ve lost count the past 10 years

“It’s another stroke, please come now”

Dad is lying still, his eyes closed

I look at him and think

He looks so old, that’s not my Dad

The doctor is standing there

“I’m sorry, there has been no response”

I hold his hand in mine and say

“Dad”

His eyes open

Me and my Dad, as I will always remember him
Me and my Dad, as I will always remember him | Source

Dad doesn’t want to let go yet

This is so hard to bear

As we face adversity

Sad and difficult times

We look for a place of solace

I found it here

To write my words…..

Oh Movie Master-This hub is so touching. I love the cool house he made you. What memories your little house gave you and the fact that your dad made it with his own hands makes it even more special. Thanks for sharing your dad with us.

Hi Minnetonka, writing this hub helped me in so many ways to cope with the trauma of my poor Dad after so many strokes, I was undecided about publishing it, but I am glad I did, because everyones comments are so healing and strengthening and have helped me a great deal, thank you.

Movie Master,

For my Dad, the year was 1996 and the reason was the same. Please keep hanging onto the memories you describe so beautifully and the comfort of your friends and family, taking all the time you need.

This was powerful, and thank you so much for sharing it with us. Voted UP & AWESOME & BEAUTIFUL, mar.

My Dad also built a playhouse for us and was such a wonderful man. Cling to your memories and touch, hug and tell your dad what he means to you while he is still there. Even if he cannot respond...hearing is the last sense to go. Strokes can rob so much from a person...the ability to function as normal. But he is still there! Share with him your wonderful memories. Wish I could still do that with my parents who are now both gone. Voted up and beautiful.

Hello Peggy W, so you too have experienced the sheer joy of a playhouse built by your own Dad, that's so special Peggy! Strokes are so cruel, I just try and cling on to these special memories, Dad seems to understand when I talk about them. Thank you so much for visiting.

MM,you have such an awesome dad. I'm always wanted a dad like that, but mine was aloof and difficult--growing up, some days, I wish he wasn't home (very sad but true). I wonder what my life would be like if I had a dad who loves me. I'm glad for you and the love your dad has for you will always be a part of you:)) He must be so proud of you--that you're immortalizing him in your poems.
