"I am From" poem, poetry by Ashley Pentycofe
“Where I’m From”
I am from big grassy yards and tulips fighting the wind
From doing things “because I said so” and wild turkeys.
I am from pancakes on Sundays and tadpoles in the pond.
From early morning fishing and late night swimming in the bay.
I am from yarn, stitches, cuts and bruises
From polka-dot prints, dancing in the living room and swing sets.
I am from new crayons and dirt pies in the sand box
From mullets, wet puppies and spaghetti.
I am from the smell of apples on his navy blue uniform and hugs n kisses good night
From backhoes, makeshift go-carts, shot guns and the roar of snowmobiles.
I am from the scent of car oil and suffocating cigarette smoke
From hunting clothes, building tree forts and empty beer cans
I am from fresh spring air, bay water, frogs and giant tractors.
I am from love, tears and belly busting laughter.
