I want to Run with the Wind

Dad and Me
Dad and Me | Source

I want to run with the wind

I tie my laces

Sighing I open the door

I don’t want to be met

With sunshine and warmth

Not today

This day fits my mood

Dark clouds fill the sky

The wind is howling

Beckoning

I start walking

The winds fury

Screams through the trees

I grit my teeth

The branches twist and bend

Again and again

I was just a child that night

When I called for you

The wind was angry

Savage in it’s rage

I was afraid

“I love listening to the wind

There’s nothing to be afraid of”

Your words to me Dad

But the comfort was you sitting on my bed

Holding my hand

I start to run

Feeling the wind

Blowing my hair

Touching my face

Hearing it’s power

I want to run with the wind

Run run

Release the anger and pain

Let it’s strength take my

Sadness and tears

I sat on your bed

Yesterday Dad

And held your hand

Speaking words of comfort

Did you know?

Today Dad I listened to the wind and remembered….

My dear Dad had his first stroke 12 years ago, how I miss the man he was.

Oh this was gut-wrenchingly poignant yet at the same time exquisitely presented. It is so hard to watch our once young, vibrantly strong parents suffer from a stroke (or in other cases comas, Alzheimer's). Your poem takes us full circle and the photo of you and your handsome Dad in a happy time during your childhood makes the reality of the things you miss seem so real to us.

Thanks for sharing this personal story.

I'll say a prayer for you and your dad today.

Movie Master: This is such a powerful expression of love and of powerlessness. The imagery of the wind is so clear and so strong that it recalls for me the feeling of the wind when I have tried to run with it. Your dad looks so capable and so full of life in the photo. I sympathize with the sadness of witnessing his decline, and I am in awe of this poem which captures such a range of feelings. I am also in awe of your dad's amazing will to live and inner strength. He is outrunning the wind; it's just in one of those mysterious ways that is puzzling and saddening to loved ones.

Movie Master: My father passed away when I was 10. My mother was allowed to stay in my life much longer. She passed away unexpectedly. What I see now --- and wish that I had focused on at the time --- was the beauty of her inner strength, which was expressing itself for us, her children.

I remain in awe of your dad's inner strength, which transcends his outer appearance. There are reasons why he is determined to remain here, and you certainly are one of them. I personally know that it is painful to see the decline. I see that you cherish the memories of his physical strength. They are part of his gifts to you. I, who do not know him, have never seen him, am in absolute awe of his inner strength, which is his last gift for you.

Your poem is a breathtaking testament to a great father who is proud of his daughter.

MM: This is the kind of thing I refer to at the bottom of my poem: "A beautiful storyline. Resonating imperfection in all its shimmering greatness."

Life is such a dichotomy. The richness of your imagery and your memories is a thing of profound strength and beauty. It's easy to focus on the sadness, but so much more full and meaningful to see the greatness in what we continue to hold after struggle. Well done!

Dear MM...what a sweet daughter you are. I love the emotion and the imagery in this beautiful poem. It speaks to so much about life...childhood, becoming the parent to our once strong and dependable parents...it seems that many of our circle of HP friends are going through this stage of life together. Many laments about seeing our parents fade and fail...so very sad. I lost both parents..my mother in 1999 and my father in 2001. She went quickly and unexpectedly; his was a longer battle w/dementia and physical ailments. He lived his last 2 years w/me in my home = the one to which I am returning. I tore down walls and opened up areas so that I could always see him from every angle. It was difficult. Bless you for caring and sharing this beautiful and heartfelt sorrow and memory of your father now, and then. Much love, Kathy

Hello Kathy, I don't think anything can prepare you for this 'reversal in roles' as your parents get older, it's both a shock and heartbreaking.

I can't find the right words. Am sure a bear hug will help a teeny weeny bit.

The only thing that scares me is the thought of my parents growing old...

Hello shami, the thought of your parents growing older I agree is very scary, I guess I always thought my father was indestructable! it's heartbreaking watching him grow weaker.

A hug does help, thank you so much.

Hi M M,

Abergavenny is indeed not very far from where we are.

I can't say off hand now how many exactly!!

If you are ever in the area please remember that there is every welcome for you to visit us here.

We are only in 3 miles from Cardigan which is about 30 miles south of Aberystwyth;if that makes it all any clearer.

I am sincere in my invitation, take care and have a wonderful day.

Eiddwen.
