IS A LEADER MADE OR BORN?
Being a leader is not a day job's, it has to do with what has to be done,how it should be done and the intricacies of the effects of its being done. People without direction will certainly achieve nothing,so is the reason why our world cannot forget great leaders in who one way or the other has made our world what it is today. To mention a few like George Washington,Abraham Lincoln,Obafemi Awolowo,Nnamdi Azikiwe etc.
I am personally of the belief that leader are not just born,but rather made. A genuine leader is one who has problem solving skills,and he acquired this problem solving skills through adequate learning and experience. Hence,a good leader possess some basic qualities like perseverance,self control,endurance,persistence,good human relations,emotional stability,technical competencies etc.
Harriman  define leadership from an organizational point of view as the process by which an executive or a manager imaginatively directs,guides,and influences the works in choosing and attaining specified goals by mediating between the individuals and the organization in such a manner that both will obtain maximum satisfaction. Tai Solarin took a more radical approach and defined leadership as suffering.However the definition by Tai Solarin expresses his level of frustration by the Nigeria styles of leaders which we still condone till date.
There are different leaders with different leadership styles,some of these styles include autocratic leadership styles which is a style of leadership in which the leader dictates the course of action without consulting his subordinates.Examples is the military government we experienced in Nigeria during the regime of Late Gen.Sanni Abacha. Also, we have the democratic and Laissez-fair styles of leadership.Any time an organization has bad or ineffective leaders,that organization will be unproductive and it will achieve nothing.No wonder,it is said that '' smite the shepherd' '' and the sheep will scatter '' i.e when the leader of the organization is attacked,definitely the who organization is attacked.The responsibility is laid on the leader.
In view of this,it is high time for everyone to have been conscious of the significance of leadership and our role as individuals in exercising our franchise and upholding leadership in our organizations and societies.In a nutshell,leaders are born and also made but they themselves have a part to pay in making themselves leaders.What are you doing to make a leader out of yourself?
