If We Could (a poem of inspiration)
If we could erase just one hundred years,
Ten thousand more never to be enough,
The wrongful waste, the despoiling of air,
And for this, those sent only a mild rebuff.
Poisoning the oceans, and foul water to drink,
Death of all our creatures... if only we think.
When will this maniacal self destruction to end,
A reclaiming of our world, then to begin?
Why must a few to decide best for the world,
As into the torment, we all are so hurled?
A never ending cycle, dilemma, without end,
More waste is produced, never to transcend.
Must now the earth be left then to cleanse itself,
Never addressing our wrongs, just set on a shelf?
Not taking the lead and leaving all to the wind,
While the future of our children, on us to depend.
Shall we all now meet that point of no return,
As stars shine in the night, our sun to still burn?
Will there be any life on this earth, in future days,
A positive outcome, only, if we change our ways?
