If it could happen once...

I try not to think about the previous generation

Should I have followed their lead?

No I don't think that's true

As you lay in our bed and we discussed the future

And I wondered right then

If it could happen once...

We got distracted by things that were important

We missed the chance to change the road that we were on

As you lay in our bed and we discussed the future

And I wondered right then

If it could happen once...

I heard from my cousin, the one who lives in London

He said we held up well, they all respect us there

Still he could see the way the journey would end

But I didn't want to know that you were staying away

As you lay in your bed we discussed the future

And I wondered right then

If it could happen once...

I drove myself home against the advice they gave me

I was in no shape to be with anyone else

I walked in my house to find the hurricane came through

The water in the valve simply burst through

As you lay in your bed

And asked me about the future

And I couldn't tell you

I simply couldn't tell you

I didn't want to tell you

I didn't want to know

What did you need to hear?

What did I have to tell you?

But then it was too too late it was too too late

And I kissed kissed you and I kissed kissed you

And I walked walked walked and got into the car

And I drove drove drove

And I drove

I drove into the night

This is a great poem about a relationship and the questions that arise. Thank you for sharing. Jamie

Once you see the writing on the wall all you can do is watch things go down the plughole, bow to the inevitable and take it like a man.

How's that for glib? You get that way after a while. Pick yourself up, dust yourself down and start all over again (we know a song about that, don't we).

True. Yeah, it's a bit glib but it's still true.

Thanks for reading and thanks for the comment.

Thank you. I'm not sure how much insight there is in there, but it was definitely difficult. Thank you for reading and for your comment.
