Lucky Me...not!

My birthday a few years ago. After my dog ate my birthday cake : /

Have you ever had one of those days where everything you were trying to do just goes miserably wrong? You’re in a hurry and every light turns red, the heel of your shoe breaks as you cross the street then you spill your purse as you lose your balance. The bad things seem to escalate once they’ve started to go wrong.

I had a day like this recently. Multiple things had already been going wrong for me this particular morning but I decided to venture out to the grocery store because well, I needed groceries. The traffic was a little hectic on my way and people were as impatient as always. The trip about the store seemed relatively normal with minor incidents. Once I got outside, I was juggling with the bags of groceries each one filled too heavy my car is parked in a slanted parking lot. As I am fumbling with the bags and trying to get them to stay in the backseat of my car I notice, (far too late), that the cart has run away from me! I slam the door shut on the bag that is going to inevitably spill all over the driveway later, to chase after the runaway grocery cart. Well, my efforts were in vane as I watch the rubber-edged cart plow into the side of a car. I ran over to get the cart and my instinct was to put the cart away and then walk over to the car to check for damage.

Well, it couldn’t be that easy. An older man walking back to his car with groceries had stopped to watch the whole thing. Not trying to warn me in anyway, just to watch my disaster and so I returned the cart and the gentleman starting grumbling some angry words at me. I made the mistake of asking him what he said. He basically yelled at me for shirking my duties as a citizen and swore at me. Firstly, I was embarrassed that he just stood there to watch but also that he made an assumption I was going to flee the scene. So, then my humiliation turned to anger. I then dug through my purse to scribble a note to the owner of a grocery cart-dented-car. All the while the angry bystander is sitting in his truck revving his engine, acting as if he will take me out if I don’t do what I’m supposed to do.

I went home shaken up a bit. I was afraid to tell my husband about the incident. It was strange it seemed that he wasn’t even listening to me as I explained. Something was off and I just couldn’t put my finger on it. Then he spilled the beans. My husband had just lost one of his income sources quite abruptly due to owner changes. My heart sank. It seemed that my bad morning was turning into a full blown bad day. When I come to think of it, it could be weeks and several months of bad. But I try not to let my mind go there.

So, how do I deal with the heaviness in my heart and in my mind? One of two ways: I either sulk, end up writing some really amazing poetry or I watch funny movies. Taking my mind off the situation for just a few hours can do a lot of good for my spirit. So, I rifle through my old DVDs to find the perfect laughter medication. The Money Pit starring Tom Hanks and Shelly Long tends to make me laugh so much and see how much worse off their situation was and it tends to make me feel a little bit better.

So, let’s face it, we all have bad days. We are in some tough economic times and people everywhere are suffering in some capacity. My problems are no different than anyone else’s. I am still capable of finding beauty in a day and believe me, I am truly grateful for the things I do have; my family, my health and love. Remember though that through the thick and the thin of things never lose your laughter!

Here’s to some good luck and a whole lot of laughter!

Thanks Cresentmoon2007!

Oh yeah that turkey put her front paws on the counter and pulled the pan close to her so she could munch away! She was kind enough to leave the pan on the counter too!

don't you hate jerks like that in that parking lot... he'd run if he'd accidentally tapped a car with a cart, but is happy to be the morality police for you.

good hub

Hey shea duane

I have a feeling you are right about that! It's always easy to judge others isn't it?! I can't stand that, I hold myself up to be a pretty law abiding person and I sure don't need others to stand there and make comments like that as if they know what I am planning to do. Ah, such is life huh?!

Thanks Karlk

I see it like this, when things start going wrong it's good to find a little bit of humor somewhere to lighten the mood. Thanks for reading!

HAH!! I've had days like that...and have envisioned this little green elf looking guy trotting along after me and causing the mischief. And laughing. Guess that's a bit on the whacky side, but hey, we have to pigeonhole it some way, right? Great read, Dawn, and way too funny :)TR (By the way, the Money Pit has been watched at my house so many times, I'm surprised the dvd still works)

Thanks Thomas! I had a fun time writing this hub! I have had a few of those days with the domino effect ! I think that laughter really is the best medicine! And The Money Pit, is one of my all time favorite movies! I like to quote it all the time, "how long will that take? Oh, TWO WEEKS"! hahaha
