Deep in my Northeast Kingdom .........verse

I watch almost without breathing as the fire of winter
afternoon spreads rather quickly across
hillsides outside of the "bog "
turning the spruce forest golden
and the tamaracks even brighter
leaving the low lands shadowed
from the early dusk's
lonely sun

Winter time tends to shake up the normal
happenings in this forest as if
time is placed in a brown paper bag
and then drops the surprises
on the woodsy surface
before me

I do love the sounds of this quick moving
Moose river
before the cold weather freezes over
the tranquility offered freely
is soaked up just as greedily
as would be in summer
and right now there is no
one else in my valley

I know ........I call it my valley
and yet it seems sometimes the loneliest
place on earth especially in winter
but that's just fine with me
solitude is my
secret lover you see
and this tryst is but a hour
greedily stolen again and again
and again from the
trappings of life

Once , back in the sixties a large area of the "northeast kingdom "was going to be flooded for a hydro- dam , a power project by the Army Corp of Engineers, before the United States government could purchase the land though , the state of Vermont stepped in and purchased it . Thereby turning into one of the largest wildlife management area's in the north east . This area is in the sparsely populated northeast quadrant of the state of Vermont , in New England .

I could feel the chill and hear the silence, excellent!

Ed - Another beautiful piece. I agree with Ms Dora about the line, "Solitude is my secret lover." (such a perfect line and such a truth for many of us) And I agree with Audrey about the measured and audible cadence of your lines....lovely. SHARING.
