Insanity: A Glimpse Into a Dark Mind (Fiction) V

Updated on October 25, 2015

As Told by a Rookie Reporter (Part 5)

"I'm James, but you can call me Jim. All my friends do."

"Hi, James. I'm Jenna."

James makes no secret of his bloodline, that much is for sure, and the idea makes me smile. I can tell that a lot of people don't take him seriously so he simply wears his pentagram openly, with the reassurance that his gifts will not be exposed. Hey, hiding in plain sight is the best place to hide, after all. Of course, some of us are more cautious with what we do but that's nothing to be ashamed of, either.

We shake hands and the connection is instant. The spark of energy is a pleasant kind of jolt but James' energy is a rush. It's clear that he has years of experience as a witch. My word, things keep on getting more and more interesting and I'm not that far into my journey of storytelling. This would make a very interesting side piece to write...of course, like always, I would have to get his consent and all. Say, maybe after I'm done, I'll start a fiction book on what I've learned. For now, Annie and Lee's story is my top priority.

"Are you unearthing something?" James asks. "The irony isn't lost on me, you know."

Funny. I didn't catch the irony until he pointed it out. I really am digging up the truth about Annie's past and quite literally. I have to laugh at it all. Strange how things work, huh? There's nothing negative about James. Far from it, actually. He has a very cheerful, sunny, disposition about him and the light that he gives off is beautiful and comforting. I know, instinctively, that I can trust him. In Wicca, we follow one basic and essential law and that is to harm no one. To harm someone is to use black magic...plus, our actions come back on us threefold.

"I'm trying to follow Anika Bryant's footsteps. Trying to find out exactly what happened to her."

"You mean seeing it through her point of view."

"Yes."

"Any success?"

"Oh, definitely. Of course, there's a dark entity in each vision."

James and I head down to the beach. Not many people out and about so we can discuss my experiences with the supernatural. I show him the dark entity that assaulted me and possessed Lee Bryant. His blue eyes darken. You can almost see the wheels in his mind go round and round. His answer catches me by surprise.

"Jenna, either you need to stop your investigation or get extra protection."

"Why?"

"You've encountered a high-level demon. I guess you can say he's a spawn of Satan."

That's not exactly what I want to hear but it would explain the crushing force that I felt while I was in Lee's prison cell. I'm really glad that Father Christopher blessed me with holy water and gave me an extra rosary. I still have my stone in my pocket. I might have to pick up some Tourmaline if I can find some. Tourmaline provides protection from all negative energy. It's a powerful stone to have. The drawback to having such a stone is that it also negates good energy as well but it's handy to have in a pinch.

"It's not going to stop me." I say to James.

"Don't be so sure. It's clever and really patient."

James closes his eyes in concentration. I'm not sure what he's doing at first but then it becomes clear that he's contacting the dark creature that currently inhabits Lee Bryant himself. He astral projected himself to the prison where the man is being kept. I'm the one who's crazy? What kind of a witch projects him or herself to the source of evil? Oh wait, apparently I do...

"It says it wants to kill you but not without indulging itself in something else."

I know exactly what it wants. It wants to corrupt me not only spiritually but physically as well. I sigh. I'm not going to stop my journey to tell Annie's story and speaking of stories...I forgot I have a deadline...for tomorrow.

Ah, crap.
