Interacting with others on Hubpages and other successful actions from a newbie Hubpages user (Hubber).

Starting with Hubpages

I was introduced to Hubpages as part of the 30 day challenge about 4 months back. Since then, I have learned a thing or two, but have along ways to go. I figured I would write down some of the things I think I know and which seemed to have helped me and perhaps others can chime in.

1) Interact with others. I think it's great to read lots of hubs, follow people you enjoy and leave fan mail, comments, etc.

2) Give back to others who give to you. I don't know if everyone does this, but whenever a fellow Hub-pager leaves me a comment, I always go find one of their articles to contribute to with a comment. I think this is good karma and you build relationships of sorts. The last couple of days for example, I have enjoyed leaving comments for habee and I noticed she always does the same. No wonder she has a 100 score.

3) Throw in interesting hubs in addition to your money makers if your main marketing sites are drab. I don't think my travel sites are particularly boring, but they aren't huge draws. A hubber I follow, dohn121 always has the hubs he writes about beautiful women reaching scores of 100. I watched the Olympics and started to get a little crush on Julia Mancuso. I put a hub up about her and happened to throw the first photo up of her in a bathing suit and suddenly that is my most trafficked hub of all time.... I wrote a hub recently about people filing for unemployment and it got a lot of interest pretty quick because it's something a lot of people are dealing with right now. The one I put up about losing weight was extremely successful.

4) Don't put up offensive hubs. Well, lets face it. Some people can be very conservative. I certainly wasn't trying to be offensive with this one. But, I threw up a hub about "spotting transsexuals" because of a very funny story from the weekend some buddies had been discussing. While the hub had sizzle, I noticed that when it was in my recent hubs, I was getting less followers. I was thinking this had something to do with maybe people assumed I had weird hubs... Anyways, I removed the hub until I had 6 others to sort of replace it on my recent hubs which shows on my profile....

5) I have heard that spending the proper amount of time writing before publishing makes a difference. Ie. letting the hub marinate so to speak. That including a few videos and lots of photos helps. I haven't done much testing, but I believe it.

6) This really only applies to myself. I would have chosen a better name. Haha. I picked a pretty unappealing name intentionally. If your name is Fester, please don't take offense. I think it's kind of cool sort of. My real first and last names are outstanding as names go. But I jokingly didn't think I would enjoy this as much as I do and chose FesterSporling as my name. Well, I wish I could change it now, but it's too late.

7) Easy with external links. I put up a 4th external link this morning on my profile and I noticed I dropped from 84 to 77 in 1 minute. I am guessing this had something to do with it.... We shall see I guess. I removed that 4th external link. I have heard you never want to put more than 2 in any given article. It is OK to put in as many Hubpage links as you want however.

8) Create an adsense account of your own. I have actually not even done this. But I am guessing even if you get a click here and there, you are making something instead of not making any money at all.... Might as well make something off the ads.

9) Link to your hubs from within your hubs. Standard marketing and spreading juice around all your hubs isn't a bad idea. I have recently noticed a lot of the "Pros" on here do this. Especially if you create a sizzle article that gets a lot of traffic you then want to send to your money sites. Ie. if you do write a really popular site about Swedish supermodels, not a bad idea to have a link sending PR to your hub from which you try to sell your Life Insurance or Phone accessories.

10) Don't stay away long. I just noticed, particularly when you are new and don't spend time on your hub pages, your score falls below 75 which then makes everything "no follow". Having an overall profile score of 75 and higher makes all your external links "do follow". This is highly intelligent of hubpages. It means that people who are "fly by night" and only here to try to make a quick buck won't succeed. Only real hubbers who follow the rules and contribute will benefit from this service.

I will think of some more and add, but if you leave any good advice in comments, I can surely add them to the mix.

Advice from Expert Hubbers

#11) (from Enelle Lamb): if you (or any newbie) is interested in making some cash with your writing, make sure to include an amazon capsule in your hubs, and possibly an eBay capsule as well.

#12) (Enelle continued) Google likes words, so try and make your hub as close to 1000 words as possible ;) and add link or news capsules as well. That will sometimes bring up the hub score and get you more views. You really do need to get an Adsense account - you would be surprised how quickly your $$ adds up!

Thanks Shalini. I am basically new at only 4 months so I am working on as many points as I can! I seem to learn something new every day.

Excellent advice, Daniel aka Fester. :) No doubt that's the best way to make HP work for you. I can't think of anything else to add, really. Forum interaction is a good way to get exposure, no doubt. Not good for organic traffic, but I've had hubbers give me free backlinks from their websites or Facebook accounts, so anything helps. Nice to meet you, Laura

Thanks Laura and pleasure to meet you too. I do find the back links and exposure from hubpages to be pretty OK. But there are obviously many different back linking strategies you have to use to get high in the Google rankings. I originally got hub pages as an SEO tool so to speak, but now more or less do it for fun as there are many easier ways to create high PR back links. It's not bad though to get the PR 1 and PR 2 back links hub pages gives you.

Great work, Daniel and thanks again for the link. I'm currently writing a hub that is similar to this one, but I don't get straight to the point like you did here! I'm sure this will help others. Great work.

Hi Daniel - pleased to meet you, and thank you for the fan mail! You make some excellent points in this hub - if you (or any newbie) is interested in making some cash with your writing, make sure to include an amazon capsule in your hubs, and possibly an ebay capsule as well. Google likes words, so try and make your hub as close to 1000 words as possible ;) and add link or news capsules as well. That will sometimes bring up the hub score and get you more views. Not too shabby! As you say you are a newcomer, does not sound like it. I am still learning and sure learned some from you. Thanks for the great hub! BTW, I didn't bother doing the Amazon because it did not do much for me at all, and Ebay is not accepting new account the last I checked. Just thought I let you know:)

Thanks Enelle. Those were excellent suggestions. I went ahead and added them above and gave you credit. :) Appreciate it!

Hello festersporting I thought you had some very valid points especially about making fans. I pretty much do the same thing. If someone follows me I will read their hubs and follow them as well but if I dont particularly like what they write about I wont follow. I don't follow someone unless they have something to say so to speak but most of the time everyone but a very few do. Anway, you are doing what you are supposed to be doing as far as I can tell I did start backlinking to 5 different sites and started a blog and noticed my traffic going up. Thanks for your advice. Enjoy your name too by the way.

Great info Daniel, this should be very helpful for individuals just starting. I had to smile when I read #2- (Give back to others), that was what brought me here to your profile today. And I agree with you 100 percent. Keep up the good work and thanks for sharing. :)

Great Hub again! But I don't have a clue how to make money on Hub Pages. It's just a hobby for me. Please tell how to do it. (Besides what was in this Hub.) I could use some extra money! Ha! Ha!

festersporling1 profile image

festersporling1 6 years ago from Los Angeles, CA Author

There are quite a few people I have seen claiming to make $500 a month to $1250 a month. Some do $1000 a month just from their Google Adsense account. And some make money by adding links which then go to their money sites.

Fantastic hub daniel. My main priority at the moment is getting my hub score up. At the start i focused to much on getting hubs posted and didnt really interact which was a silly mistake. good work.

festersporling1 profile image

festersporling1 6 years ago from Los Angeles, CA Author

It will go up fast if you have good hubs which you seem to and interact with other routinely. Obviously from an SEO standpoint, having a hubpage score of less than 75 is useless since all your links are nofollow.

hypnodude profile image

hypnodude 6 years ago from Italy

Great article, as a matter of fact I'm following much of your very good advices; that's why I'm here. :) I would like to know how it is gone with your profile and links. A lot of hubbers have many links going out of their profile page.

I think I should follow you now, since a lot of my friends are already here. Rated up, and stumbled. :)

Glad it worked for you and happy to have you as a follower. I enjoyed some of your stuff too.

stagnetto 6 years ago

Hello festersprling1 very good and helpful hub but there's only one thing that I disagree with because I have been here for over 11 months and my amazon capsules have hardly brought me anything although after reading your article I might go back to introducing them into my articles for a while and see what happens!! Adsense is what really works.

festersporling1 profile image

festersporling1 6 years ago from Los Angeles, CA Author

11 months is a good time to test. I definitely value your feedback. If it doesn't work, it doesn't work! Thanks Stagnetto.

Hi, Daniel, that is so much better than fester! ha ha seriously you have good points here. I saw on your profile that you removed a certain hub, I think it was probably losing people reading it because you were outside the situation? if you know what I mean. this is got some really good points here. thanks nell

Really good points, loved them. Although I'm not on here to make money, you have some great points on bringing in readers and to bring "hubbers" together to share ideas and views on certain subjects. Why didn't anyone think of this before? Again, loved it.
